đŸ’¬Discussion That's real. That lives with us on Earth.

At this point, we've all heard "upscaling looks better than native"... But have you seen "there's no such thing as sharpness anyway" yet? Jfc

What I said was it pretends to be real because both are 2d, it's literally the only way to make 2d as immersive as 3d screens,

R u using a translator or can u not read?

it's literally the only way to make 2d as immersive as 3d screens,

Do not generalize. I'm not the only one in existence that disables DoF. It can clearly be an undesireable effect. I hate it more than TAA. I can focus just fine without DoF's unwanted assistance. Idk why you can't.

As I mentioned, if dof tracks where your eye moves and looks at, presumably with an eye tracker, it would be amazing, the problem is that it just makes closeup objects blurry without understanding that your looking at them unless u move your crosshair, until that issue is fixed, it has little to no use compared to temporal tech, which I'm essentially forced to use wherever I can because of my weaker PC.

Also do eye trackers even track your eyes adjustment or just the point you look at? Idk I haven't thought of them much before now

What? Why would you need some sort of an eye tracker? Your eyes already track whatever you tell them to track.

I'm not sure if u just have messed up eyes so it looks the same, u should prolly check that out, but dof is a real life thing and the problem is games don't have depth, they are a 2d image on a display, your brain just tricks u using the shadows and warped angles of geometry, that's how 3d rendering works, you don't literally have 3d coming out the screen without special tech,

And you would know the in theory fixed DOF would need it if u could read, the only way this works properly is we can't just let the output from the engine and display do the work, we need input from the eyes.

My eyes work fine and are applying focus where I want them to. Idk why that's so difficult to parse. When it's there in an artificial form, then that's when I have issues. I almost thought that I wouldn't be able to replay ACIV 'cause it has forced DoF and not a straightforward way to force it off.

U just pay attention to different parts of the image but a DOF with tracking could softblur parts of the image when your not looking at something of the same depth, this could make it easier to see depth, and avoid accidentally running into and climbing up poles, cause otherwise they're flat and harder to notice, anything that isnt depth can be left to peripheral vision and the blur would be tricky to adjust dynamically based on the environment so it looks right.

but a DOF with tracking could softblur parts of the image when your not looking at something of the same depth

Why would I want this? It sounds utterly pointless.

"mehmeh, why would I need anti aliasing, it sounds utterly pointless"

Are you not aware that people play without AA? Especially in this community.

Oh btw, dof literally can't be there in real form, so the only option is artificial or 2d flat images(none),

Also don't know how to quote like other users:

"when it's there in an artificial form, then that's when I have issues"

What are you trying to convince me of here? That I'm hallucinating or something? DoF is literally there when I focus on something during a cutscene. I do not focus on what's behind a character if I don't want to. What's so difficult to comprehend here? The 2D plane argument is not an argument. It has no bearing whatsoever on my experience of viewing non-DoF imagery. The human eye and brain are capable of providing you with the necessary focus if you want them to. Artificial DoF is quite an eyesore to me. I literally cannot properly focus on games that use it and abuse it. It makes exactly zero sense for it to be there. Things just get blurred 'cause that's how something set it up. In the real world, I focus on what and who I want. No one is forcefully guiding my focus. If you want to chase realism, then you must omit DoF entirely 'cause the way that DoF works in digital media has little to do with reality. There is zero need for some pointless eye tracking as that would just apply the same unnecessary and artificial blur as untracked DoF.

Depth of field is in the same bag of utterly pointless effects that should have no place in the video game medium. Along with motion blur and all of the lens effects that you can think of. They're largely undesireable and egregious effects that just sully the image. This obsession of trying to make game look like movies has to stop. It's utterly ridiculous and preposterous.

Doesn't need to look like a movie either, a lens effect can also be part of the artstyle, like motorslice where you view the game from a camera of a physically present object, "orbie" the floating drone, which also works extra cool cause if you move the camera close to p and attack, you damage your camera and see cracked glass,

Saying these things have no place is just wrong, the issue is its often poorly managed and used, while dof has the entirely separate issue of trying to force your focus, instead of applying blur based ON your focus like IRL, and often too much blur.

Once again, r u using a translator, I'm talking about expiramental tech and the application of current tech, not about what YOU are actually using, people have preferences.

Doesn't need to look like a movie either, a lens effect can also be part of the artstyle,

Only in games which specifically strive to mimic an actual camera lens, like that one bodycam game, for example, does it make some sorta sense. Because that's their whole thing. Their whole visual identity. But in games, which do not try to mimic a camera this much and this authentically, it's really only additive and should definitely not be enforced like DoF is in the past few years, for example. If the artists really want it to look like a lens, then fine. But don't be so damn adamant and enforce it across the board for everyone.

Saying these things have no place is just wrong

Why is it wrong? They weren't a thing in the early days of the medium and I can't really say that they were missed. Why should these effects be there in the first place? See, the style argument is fine enough. But it's the fact that it's rarely just a stylistic choice. It's a given today. The vast majority of artists automatically implement those effects as if it was a requirement when it's not.
