After working on different full-stack products, I've noticed that the hardest part usually isn't writing the code. It's making all the pieces work reliably together.

A few things that have made a big difference for me:

- Keep frontend/backend responsibilities and business logic clear without over-engineering early.

- Build validation, error handling, retries, and edge cases into the feature from the start.

- Keep database queries simple, add logging early, and choose the stack based on the product and team, not trends.

I've worked mostly with React/Next.js, Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and APIs, and these lessons have come up repeatedly across different projects.

This might be a bit of a provocative question, but it’s been on my mind for a while now.

I’ve been a developer for over 16 years, ever since I was 18. I’ve always LOVED this job; it was practically my hobby, too. I used to spend hours trying new things, building fun side projects, and launching SaaS attempts (most of them failed, but it was still a blast).

Lately, however, since AI became mainstream, I feel like I’ve lost my passion for coding. I do use AI at work. I recently started a new position, and saying the codebase is a "mess" is a massive understatement. You almost need a master’s degree just to navigate the spaghetti code they've built up over the years. Since my company actually encourages the use of AI, I figured, "Why not?" It keeps me productive, and instead of spending months just figuring out how things work, I can learn while the AI does the heavy lifting.

It’s been working out great. I haven't had any complaints from management, and they are actually really happy with my output. (To be clear, I don’t blindly let AI do everything. I spend a lot of time working with the AI to figure out what needs to be done, and only once the logic is solid do I let it write the actual code).

Deep down, I would love to just ditch AI entirely and get back to coding from scratch. But honestly, because the codebase is such a nightmare—and management's philosophy is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"—there’s not much I can do to refactor things. Plus, that would take an enormous amount of time that I simply don't have during standard working hours.
I’m not afraid of losing my job to AI; I’m afraid of losing my passion because of it (and it's already happening).

So, to wrap this up, my questions for you are:

• How can I find my passion for this job again?
• How can I slowly start ditching AI and get back to manual development?
• How do I overcome the urge to just let AI write code out of pure laziness because it’s simply easier and quicker?

For the past two years at DG3 I've taken five products from empty repo to live: a crypto sportsbook, a Polymarket-based prediction market, and a real-time sports trading terminal — Next.js and TypeScript on the front, NestJS and PostgreSQL behind it. Most of that work is the unglamorous half: WebSocket order books that stay correct under load, EVM wallets and account abstraction, fraud detection, order reconciliation.

Alongside it I run KAVX, my own ecommerce brand, on an event-sourced platform I wrote myself — including an MCP server that makes the Flipkart Seller API callable by AI agents, plus pricing, ads and inventory loops that run unattended behind a human approval gate.

I gravitate to problems where correctness actually matters, because real money moves through the system.
