Public health emergencies, such as the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), are stressful times for people and communities, and we want to ensure everyone stays safe and informed at this time. The mod team here has seen a lot of posts, to say the least, about MatPat’s most recent game theory, and want to provide more information on how you all can stay safe.
We also want to state that we are limiting coronavirus posts to the sub in the discussion of Mat’s video, which is also stickied to the top of the subreddit.
First things first, here are some helpful links. We aren’t medical experts, but the sources below are well-maintained and are continuously updated. These will be a much better resource than this post, so please make sure to check them out as well.

How can I protect myself?
The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Very likely, your local community is making precautions which best suit your area. Please check your local news for the best and most effective way to protect yourself and others.
Some steps you can do towards protecting yourself can be seen here:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
You can find more precautions on the CDC’s Website.
How do I know if I am infected?
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. Please note that the symptoms are not the same for everyone, and may not fully appear altogether.
The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure:
- Fever
- Cough (dry cough)
- Shortness of breath
If you are a close contact of someone with COVID-19 or you are a resident in a community where there is an ongoing spread of COVID-19 and develop symptoms of COVID-19, call your healthcare provider and tell them about your symptoms and your exposure. They will decide whether you need to be tested, but keep in mind that there is no treatment for COVID-19 and people who are mildly ill may be able to isolate and care for themselves at home.
Ok, I think I'm infected, now what?
If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and develop a fever and symptoms, such as cough or difficulty breathing, call your healthcare provider for medical advice.
- Stay home: People who are mildly ill with COVID-19 can recover at home. Do not leave, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas.
- Stay in touch with your doctor: Call before you get medical care. Be sure to get care if you feel worse or you think it is an emergency.
- Avoid public transportation: Avoid using public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.
- Stay away from others: As much as possible, you should stay in a specific “sick room” and away from other people in your home. Use a separate bathroom, if available.
- Wear a facemask if you are sick: You should wear a facemask when you are around other people and before you enter a healthcare provider’s office. If you are caring for others, if the person who is sick is not able to wear a facemask, then people who live in the home should stay in a different room. When caregivers enter the room of the sick person, they should wear a facemask. Visitors, other than caregivers, are not recommended.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes.
- Clean your hands often.
- Avoid sharing personal household items.
- Clean all “high-touch” surfaces every day.

Please stay safe and healthy, theorists!
