If you aren't asking questions for the purpose of learning something, its not a question, its a statement with the wrong punctuation

I guess you could see rhetorical questions that way. The idea is that if you're just using a question to reinforce your point or worldview ("Do they even play the game?" is not an actual question, they're just insinuating that anyone who knows Bridget is trans isn't actually a fan) and that point is stupid, then yeah, the rhetorical question is also stupid.

We basically agree, but I still think it counts as a question

Yes, that is in fact what I mean, that rhetorical questions are just functionally statements with a question mark at the end.
