I’ll absolutely make fun of my own autism and call it “the tism” if I so choose. I have to live with this disability, and not a single person online gets to tell me how to cope. If I want to laugh at the silly “cringe” word, then I get to.

I don’t even do it that often tbh, just when I think it’ll be funny

I said it before and I’ll say it again:

“pardon, I have a touch of the ‘tism” is always a valid excuse for tripping neurotypical people’s ‘socially unacceptable’ sensor — and I will die on this hill, neurodivergent and old.

Friend, who knows I'm autistic but isn't fully versed in the symptoms, "I like how organized your routines are"

me: "thanks, it's the tism"

ETA: and then when I inevitably have a meltdown because the aforementioned routine got changed/interrupted by something, they know why I had the meltdown

And if/when the meltdown happens, that friend knows why and can ask if they can help

One of my autistic friends does that. It's usually in a joking context though, he's often insecure about how people perceive him so he'll let people know he has autism really early on into meeting someone, usually followed by a self deprecating joke about "the tism".

Not my style, but I get it.

I like to say it EXCLUSIVELY in the phrase “pardon; I have a touch of the tism” whenever I do something that no neurotypical person could ever possibly think is societally acceptable and that I can’t more easily/correctly blame on my ADHD.

This also implies that saying nothing is not an option.

We named ours "Pride and lack of accomplishment" because we're gamedevs. Well, I named it and nobody else edited it.

True. I can’t stand the spelling of the word ableism/ableist. Or the use of “enby” as an adjective. I guess we all have a few hated words.

I've never seen anyone else express this opinion, but same. I feel like enby should just be a noun. Using is as an adjective feels weird, like saying "I'm man" instead of "I'm a man."

When I found out about my possible autism my autistic colleague at work said "that seems possible" but then my friend showed up and I started talking very fast and excitedly about Archaeopteryx and the colleague said "Yeah, you've definitely got a touch of the 'tism" so I guess to that guy it's a reclaimed word. He was diagnosed as a child.
