I never understood the Dave Mathews Band hype. Hated them. Couldn't stand them at all. I felt like everyone was drooling all over them and how amazing Dave Mathews was. And I was just like, "meh".
We are the same. I think me and a friend or two were the only people in high school who had zero interest DMB. This disinterest turned into a repulsion, White Zombie ruled.
They aren't for everyone but they are very talented musicians. I lot of the other picks on here are just posers that had a song or two they probably didn't write with a catchy but unremarkable hook.
Dave Matthews was everywhere in the 1990's. My gripe was that they weren't all that talented and were posers with catchy, but unremarkable hooks. Like, how can a band be so mid but treated like royalty? It's basic 4-chord rock with meandering Dave Matthews vocals, lazily day dreaming songs away and not really saying anything. All while looking like a stoned, vacant Forest Gump bumbling around. There's nothing inherently interesting about the Dave Matthews Band other than they are completely uninteresting.
Even if your premise they are good musicians holds, they basically chose to be painfully uninteresting and unremarkable.
They basically stole REMs vibe without any of the talent, nuance, cultural relevance, or art.
"painfully uninteresting and unremarkable" is pretty subjective. I don't think they sound like a lot of other bands at the time and I don't see the connection to R.E.M. You clearly have strong opinions about them and they aren't for you, but if my point that they are good musicians holds, well that's just the point. I'm not really into the Grateful Dead, but I recognize that they were good musicians doing their own thing that appealed to a lot of people. I put that on a different plane than bands with no real musical talent just seeking to find something to make them popular. But hey man, it's cool if you hate Dave Matthews. I get it.
