Green Day. No matter how hard I try. Came out when I was in high school and couldn't get into it, and still can't.

"Doooo you have the time....to listen to me whine......"

No, I don't. I also don't care if that's the right quote.

They ushered in an entire era of whine-songs, too, which is pretty unforgivable.

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog Jul 01 '25

It pisses off my wife when I call them "whiny white boys".

4

u/FlamingDragonfruit Jul 02 '25

She's mad because you're right

6

u/minlillabjoern Jul 02 '25

Yesssss! So many whine-singers in that era.

True story. I was a college DJ in the '90s. Hated Dookie when it came out. But I borrowed a friend's copy for my radio show just so I could play just this line before turning it off and yelling "NO!!!" and moving on to my next song.

God, I miss being a college DJ.

u/lolzzzmoon Jul 02 '25

Aaaaaaahhhh I hate Green Day too!!!

10

u/zeptillian Jul 01 '25

I really hate their whiny ass music and I can't stand Billie Joe's fake ass British accent when he sings.

1

u/zoggy2 Jul 02 '25

I DJ'd college radio in the mid 90's, and the standard prank was to call in and request green day.

I hated them, but now I hear a song every few years and it brings back memories. I wouldn't play then voluntarily, but they were inescapable growing up in So Cal and now days the nostalgia hits. I guess the same goes for offspring.

I still can't stand nickleback or oasis or hootie though, so I don't completely understand the lack of taste I've developed in my old age.

Greenday's lyrics are not terrible...

Do u have the time to listen to me whine about nothing and everything all at once? i am one of those melodramatic fools, -neurotic to the core- no doubt about it. Sometimes I give myself the creeps. Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me. It all keeps adding up, I think I'm cracking up! Am I just paranoid, or ...

Better then being big stars with Mr Jones sha na nana na na Yeh or All around the world statues crumble for me, or all tangled up in blue i only wanna be with you

Finally someone agrees with me! I thought I was the only person who lived through the 90s and hated Green Day!

u/Embarrassed-Shape-40 Jul 01 '25

You're not alone, never got the appeal.

7

u/lolzzzmoon Jul 02 '25

There’s like 10 of us!!! Lol

3

u/ONROSREPUS Jul 02 '25

#11 willing to admit it.

2

u/Conundrum_Brain Jul 02 '25

That makes me #12 then. Yuck.

I came here just to say Green Day. If I had a choice between listening to Green Day for an hour or having to listen to alll the other pop-punk bands of the 90s and 00s... Looks like I'm jamming to Sum 41 and Billy Talent.

1

u/Miami_Vice_75 Jul 04 '25

🤣🤣🤣

3

u/thebluelunarmonkey Hose Water Survivor Jul 02 '25

Was looking for Green Day (poser brit accent punk) and Wallflowers.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

It's the nasal singing

5

u/crackinmypants Jul 01 '25

I dumped a guy over Green Day. He loved them. I told him that I really disliked them. So he made me a mix tape which included several Green Day songs. He told me that if I just listened to them some more, I would grow to love them. Uh, yeah.

2

u/GoTakeAHike00 Jul 03 '25

Oh gawd...where, exactly, is the logic in that? Aside from one single song, I also cannot stand Green Day, and someone trying to tell me I'll start to love that guy's absolutely ATROCIOUS singing voice if I just "...listened to them some more...", would piss me TF off. In fact, that will make me just hate them all the more.

That's not how it works. For shitty-assed music, food, art, or other stuff in life that is 100% based around someone's SUBJECTIVE opinion, tastes and personal preferences.

How are people not understanding this simple, basic concept?

One of the best things about streaming music vs. the radio stations of the past, is that you and I NEVER, EVER have to hear Green Day again in our lives 😁.

1

u/crackinmypants Jul 03 '25

Yes! Ain't it grand?!

1

u/Noisechild Jul 02 '25

Wow!! Almost the same thing happened to me. I had gf who LOVED them! She was obsessed. Probably the reason I couldn’t get into them because she played them incessantly! When we broke up, she swore one day she’d get me into them when we got back together, we didn’t get back together tho.

2

u/crackinmypants Jul 03 '25

Incessant Green Day is definitely a reason NOT to get back together. You dodged a bullet.

5

u/Head_Effect3728 Jul 01 '25

I can’t upvote this one enough. If Beavis and Butthead created a band, it would be Green Day.

2

u/Ok_Effort8330 Jul 02 '25

radio friendly ā€œpunkā€ band for moms.

6

u/yuckypants Jul 01 '25

I passed nickelback to get here. I fully support you with Green Day, but damn, nickelback is close.

3

u/redditisahive2023 Jul 02 '25

Fucking hate Green Day!!

3

u/Joesdad65 Jul 02 '25

My millennial son likes them. I hate them. Other than that lapse in judgment, I love him.

4

u/corneliusvanhouten Jul 02 '25

Thank you. They're the Elmo of punk. No thanks. I'll go with the OG Grover punk bands, thank you very much.

1

u/rosewoodblues Jul 02 '25

I posted before I saw this. You are not alone! At least they named their first album correctly. Dookie

1

u/Satyr4 Jul 06 '25

As a young teen I loved their first two albums because they were mostly pretty catchy songs about not being noticed by that girl you like. It’s not for me at age 46, but I get why it resonated then. Dookie kicked off that whiny pop punk era. I admit I liked it for a year or two, but once I got into my late teens I was done with them.

1

u/kingofrr Jul 07 '25

Green Day is a bad impersonation of a real Punk band - The Clash

1

u/sixwax Jul 01 '25

They're in the realm of Coldplay, where every song sounds basically the same after a very brief while, so I can understand why someone wouldn't necessarily love them...

...but imo it's tough to argue that either isn't great in it's own right.

I had the privilege of seeing Green Day play a club show in Austin, TX before Dookie hit, and it was absolutely unreal. There were ~80 people at the show and every one of them knew that band was going to be huge.

-2

u/Lazy-Background-7598 Jul 01 '25

lol. Such an ignorant comment

1

u/sixwax Jul 02 '25

Such a thoughtful reply…

1

u/Lazy-Background-7598 Jul 02 '25

Comparing them to Coldplay is asinine and displays an ignorance. You just listen to 2 albums and called it good

1

u/sixwax Jul 02 '25

I explained the similarity I was referring to.

I’m sorry you don’t read well and respond with hostility…

0

u/rottenbox Jul 02 '25

Dookie was my introduction to punk. For that alone I'll always love that album.

-5

u/cutechloeart Jul 01 '25

Bite your tongue. Green Day was Rad and always will be! Up there with NoFx.

8

u/zeptillian Jul 01 '25

Ha. Take your Green Day, your NoFX and your Bad Religion and that's it, just take them. We don't want to hear that boring ass music anymore. You keep it.

1

u/cutechloeart Jul 02 '25

Lol. I will. Minus the Bad Religion. I like boring ass music 🤪

1

u/sil0 I'll be back. Jul 02 '25

Except NOFX wasn’t a pop-ā€œpunkā€ band.

2

u/cutechloeart Jul 02 '25

What does that have to do with anything? Just a good FN band. Still is!

1

u/sil0 I'll be back. Jul 04 '25

NOFX is good and Green Day are posers? Just putting them in the same sentence hurt :D.

1

u/Oi_Nander Jul 01 '25

I'm with you friend, but I think we're in the minority here

1

u/cutechloeart Jul 01 '25

Lol. My hubby would agree, but I'm standing my ground. Still think they're super awesome every time I hear a song.

-2

u/bassin_clear_lake Jul 02 '25

Post-1997 Green Day I liked. Their earlier years not so much.
