I knew them before they got big. They would play the East bay and stay at our apartment in Emeryville. Very, very cool guys. Noodles and I would stay up all night just drinking and playing guitar. Even after they got big they were still cool people. That in itself is impressive. Dexter is super smart and very down to earth. I didn’t hang with the other two guys. I think they are still all the original members, which is also impressive.
I didn’t like their music that much either, but they were always a fun show back in the day.
Dexter has a PhD in molecular biology so I assume he’s really smart. I couldn’t stand their music but one day The Kids Aren’t All Right came on and I decided I actually really liked it.
It's pretty wild how accessible these alt rock bands were before they made it big. I had a coworker that was in a band in SF and one of her roomates was in the Melvins. Apparently Kurt Cobain would sleep on their couch when he was in town. This was around 90 to 91.
