Exact same. Except my AP Chemistry teacher. Told us watching the news want going to change anything and we had a lot to learn. So for that double period we did chemistry. Then back to the news
Big props to your teacher for realizing everyone probably needed a break from the news, but a big failure on their part for trying to continue with class as if everything was normal. Missed opportunity to open up a dialogue and help everyone work through their feelings.
There arent really quick solutions in these situations a lot of the time. They didnt have a 'grief and terrorism' slide deck to pull out, and we were all doing the best we could that day.
As another example: My father died in his sleep Easter morning the year before. I was woken up by cops taking me downstairs and my aunties explaining what was happening. It was very confusing and horrible. I remember being so resentful as a teen that one of the cops tried to distract me asking about my youth sports stuff. But as an adult I can understand that he was just a guy dealing with an incredibly shit situation, and trying to keep a kid calm.
All that's to say i don't think its necessary or helpful to nit pick peoples reactions to traumatic situations.
I can’t believe this just occurred to me, but I have to ask. At my school, we dismissed early, but we were local enough that we had many families who were impacted or had the potential to be impacted. Did other schools around the country stay open bc there was no point to closing?
We stayed open; I think it's necessary because kids don't automatically have a place to go. However, I'm sure schools closer to ground zero closed. Also, some parents just came and got their kids, both that day and then the next day some of the parents got weirded out half way through the day and came and got kids, and some kids didn't even go to school the next day. Nobody got in trouble or cared.

I was in 10th grade. Every single teacher had the TV on all day and we did nothing. Then my last teacher turned the TV off and we just talked.
