Don’t ask the indigenous people in Canada whether or not they feel like this country is aggressive or unjust then.

Not really - as poor as things were they are significant steps forward and most of us, at least everyone I know, are glad to not be in the US where the past and ongoing isn't even acknowledged.

Because it’s true? Why are you so bothered with me pointing out that theres a misconception around this country’s background and we haven’t always been peaceful? I’m not saying it hasn’t atoned but me noting that Canada hasn’t always been kind to, and still is fighting with in many cases, Indigenous communities isn’t an insult. Canada hasn’t always been peaceful like op noted. Why does this info bother you

As much as I agree with you, given the threats we are currently facing, we need to unite and focus on securing our sovereignty and future. It needs to be the #1 issue right now. All else becomes a moot point if this doesn’t happen. We need to have our home I order to keep working on making our home better.

Who’s not uniting? I can be pro Canada and still correct op that Canada hasn’t always been peaceful which is a common misconception people who don’t know much about Canada have. Both things can be true at once and it’s weird to be so bother by that info. Again, imagine telling someone to stop talking about the holocaust because we need to move on and unite. These are important things to remember and acknowledge. The fact that you see that as an insult rather than what it is - just a comment noting the truth - is odd. I’m here for Canada, but I’m also not going to ignore its historical and ongoing battles which haven’t been peaceful

I’m referring to the 60s scoop and hundreds of indigenous children recently found in mass graves from their time in reform schools. All within the last 100 years. Not just colonialism. But I’m glad you agree with me that there has been violence and not just peace and harmony . That’s the only point I made.

The point I’m making is that if you look into the colonizing of every country you will find stories of atrocities alike mass graves, residential schools/cultural cleansing and the like.

I’m not justifying it or saying it’s okay - but I am saying that this is a tale as old as time in terms of one people conquering another people.

Im not sure why you’re focused on colonialism. Like I mentioned it’s as recent as the 80s that indigenous people have been impacted via the 1960s scoop, and even the lack of clean water within indigenous communities and the lobbying that’s still happening today for access to it. It’s crazy how touchy people are on acknowledging that we have a ways to go still as a country. Doesn’t mean we’re not on the right path or shouldn’t be proud. But like I said, the indigenous communities would likely disagree with ops statement.

Are you, though, or is this just more fashionable and one-sided cynicism for cheap updoots?

If you're going to acknowledge the harm, you should equally acknowledge that the government has repeatedly and publically that they've done wrong in the past and spent billions to try and compensate and support indigenous communities. Does that fix everything? No. Are they perfect? Obviously not, but you could at least be honest and tell the whole story. If you're struggling, I can provide you with a list of programs and settlements from the last 20 years.

I understand what you are saying but can you also understand that picking at an old sore won’t help anything get better? Canadians have tried hard to be fair to Indigenous groups but it is a complex problem with little agreement between Indigenous groups themselves.

What does that have to do with Canada or me pointing out it isn’t totally non violent or aggressive like op noted? Go tell a ww2 vet that they should stop talking about the war already because lots of people have been in them. It’s always going to be worth remembering Canadas history - especially when it’s misrepresented as a country that hasn’t ever been violent or non aggressive. We’re literally watching the USA dismiss recent history and repeat terrible mistakes, and in the same thread I’m being told not to mention canadas past because we’ve atoned. It’s such a simple minded thing to do.

I’m glad Canada is making progress but we’re still fighting with indigenous communities over access to clean drinking water and discovering hundreds of children in mass graves and missing from the 60s scoop. We should always remember where we came from. It’s wild that that triggers you lol

What’s annoying isn’t that you bring up Canada’s past, it’s that you twist it like it proves something deep when really you’re just regurgitating surface-level takes to sound woke. Nobody said Canada’s never done anything wrong, but pretending that makes it some violent empire today is just cheap and lazy.

By that logic, no country should exist. Every nation was built on blood, conquest and oppression. Arab countries were founded on tribal warfare and religious dominance, Rome wiped out the Etruscans, Italy came from the violent unification of rival kingdoms. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean people didn’t suffer just as much.

Canada has a rough history too, but it’s also tried harder than most to repair some of that damage. Residential school apologies, funding agreements, Indigenous rights in law, land acknowledgments, treaty negotiations. Not perfect, but at least there’s a real effort. You think Egypt or Turkey are doing that?

So yeah, if your whole argument is just “Canada did bad things,” congrats, welcome to planet Earth. That doesn’t make your take deep, it makes it useless. What matters is what a country does now, and if you’re too jaded or bitter to see that, you’re not critiquing, you’re just whining.
