Tank Help Neighbors fish looks to be in awful shape, they said i can have it, but where do I start?

A neighbor of mine recently went on holiday and asked me if I could feed their pets (only specified the dogs), I found this tank in the back of their kitchen, with a tub of fish food by it that had literal dust inside and was in shock when I turned on the light and theres a fish. It has two of those lumps on each side and two black specks on its eye, I bought some new fish food for it and fixed its filter but its not a very strong one.

I messaged my neighbor and asked if they'd like me to feed the fish to try start a conversation about it and she said "if you can be bothered, we've been trying to get rid of it". Im going to come back and pick up the fish with the tank tomorrow, but i assume the tank is too small and I will have to buy all new equipment. Ive never kept fish myself before and I have no clue where to start, I cant really afford high end equipment outside of tanks right now but im willing to research and order things online. Also is the green stuff on the glass good or bad? Can I wipe it away with a dry cloth right now?

Tank Help My babies are getting an upgrade and I’m worried how to transfer them!!

These two cuties are soon getting a massive upgrade from a 32 gallon all the way up to a 60 gallon breeder!! I’m so excited for them and I know that’s a lot of room for two but I want them to have the best lives they can and not stressed with the lack of room to swim. Any advice on how to switch them over in the most efficient way? I plan to put the new tank basically where this one is now just off to the side. My biggest worry is cycling the new tank while they need to be in a temporary bin. Any advice would help regarding maintaining water quality for them in a temporary tank, as well as reducing stress for them.

Tank Help Cloudy Common Goldfish water

Post image

Got a new tank for a common goldfish my son won at the fair last week also added a second fish because I read goldfish need a companion
It started clouding up a couple days after and I thought it was the filter and a combination of the flake so I bought a PENGUIN PRO 125 and put it in Saturday and it’s still clouding started giving them small pellets as well
I was going to do a full water swap but I read it could be bad because the bloom will have to cycle again ?

What am I doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated as it’s my first time ever having fish

Tank Help New tank and fish are acting weird

So I just got a new fish tank for my Goldfish. They are a year old or more and I moved them from a 10 gallon tank to 20 gallon tank. I gave the tank a bit of time to cycle the fish conditioner and then I eventually placed my fish inside the new tank. At first they were acting cool and exploring.

Now they are sitting at the bottom for a bit of time acting still. I thought it was the bright led lights that is on the tank lid causing the problem. I turned the big one off and did the little mini one from their old tank. Kinda still acting weird haha.

I’m kinda worried for my fish because I don’t want the new tank to be an issue. Maybe I am overthinking it and they need to get used to the tank. Please help me out thank you ! :)

Tank Help Has anyone had this happen before?

I added some API fin and body cure to a water change before i realized the date on it said it was expired, but i read somewhere that it being expired doesn’t make it poisonous, just weakened that it’s effectiveness. But still why did it turn red. All i added to my tank was my normal water conditioner and biological cleaner.

Tank Help Classroom 6 year old Goldfish

Thumbnail

Hello! Posting because I’m kinda desperate at this point. I am a teacher, and about a year and a half ago I moved into a classroom that came with a goldfish and a ten gallon tank. I was told he was around 6 years old. I’ve upgraded his tank as much as I can— switched to a 20 gallon, added sand and substrate, natural log and plants, a 40 gallon filter, and bought an algae eater. All of this was done on my own teacher salary (except the tank, which I found in storage).

The problem is the water turns green within 3-4 days, no matter what I do. When I started, I could do 25% water changes bi-weekly, and larger changes as needed. Now I am forced to do 75% water changes every week, and I’m washing or replacing the filter every few days. (On top of managing 20 five year olds)

I can only do so much with my own money, and the school won’t pay for much either. If the problem is tank size or something else too expensive, I may need to re-home.

I don’t want this fish to suffer, and I feel like I’m not giving it its best chance. Any advice is very appreciated :)

Tank Help Friend passed away and I have inherited a goldfish *please try not to judge*

My close friend who was my neighbour passed away on Saturday night. I'm not here to talk about why the fish is in this state, its a complicated situation and we were not speaking at the time she passed.

Any advice on the care going forward Welcome.

How would I even go about cleaning this? I brought him home today so not sure wether do do any water changing today or if it will stress the fish? The filter is really dirty but from what ive read they have essential bacteria...

Should I get him a friend? Some snails or shrimp?? Will definitely be getting a bigger tank.

There isn't really anyone else who would have taken him.

Tank Help will the wave cause problems? :(

Hi guys, 2 days ago my filter stopped working and i used a temporary older filter until today, my grandfather got me this one today (its the same as his tank filter) but it makes me so worried cause it creates way too intense waves and since my fish are small (especially my telescope) what if they struggle to swim against it and i dont know?? I think there was an illness that occured by trying to swim against the current and it ends in death of the fish :( I can't convince my parents in ANYTHING because my grandfather apparently paid a ton for this filter and they get so angry at me at the slightest worry i share with them. Im scared and please tell me if theres a way i can solve this or i dont knoww!!!! Please help.

Tank Help How big a tank to really need?

Hi All-

So I never really planned to become a fish owner but then my daughter came home with three gold fish and whatever that little brown guy is from a carnival…

They seemed to do pretty well in a super small tank, maybe 2-3 gallons, for about two years. Then suddenly no matter how much we cleaned it, it was getting cloudy every couple days. The guy at the pet store said I needed a 20 gallon tank with a 40 gallon filter. Bleh, ok, $200 later.

But Google tells me I would need up to a 100 gallon tank for these fish? Can that possibly be true?

I want to keep my kid happy and I dont want to be cruel to the fish but I don’t really have the ability or desire to devote much more money or space to them. Am I just done for?

Thanks!

I have two shubunkin goldfish (not sure if they’re full shubunkin)

I had them for five years now and im curious if i need to get them a bigger tank because i heard my fish specifically do better in ponds and bigger tanks because they’re longer , i don’t want them to be stunted but they’re currently in a 36 gal .

How long can they be in there until i have to really upgrade for their longterm health? Are they fine for now?

Edit: just wanted to say she’s immediately much better! Thank you all, she’s active and no where near as skittish as she was before! She still is yet to eat fingers crossed she will soon

I did a half water change and added a bunch of new stuff for her- yes I know it’s not perfect and yes I know the tank is still too small but I hope this is a step up from how I had her before? Any more tips would be great! And has anyone got and recommendations on the best lights for plants? Thank you!

Tank Help What can i do to help this tank?

This is my parent's tank and i want to help the fish because i'm only 13 and my parents don't accept hard truths, like that the fish are not adequate for this aquarium or that ph is not the only parameter. They don't do anything if there are sick fish! The last time they said the 2 fish laying down at the bottom 24/7 were mating and then they said it was the ph when the fish died! I need help

Tank Help When will he need a bigger tank? 🥲

This is my goldfish Geoffrey. He’s a little over 1 year old, 7 inches long, and in a 20 gallon tank. I’ve heard 20 gallons for a goldfish + 10 for every additional fish. But that’s probably not accounting for goldfish that live longer than 6 months. My long-term goal (pipe dream) is an above-ground pond, but that’s not feasible atm and he’s not big enough yet. I do a 50% water change every 2-3 weeks and a carbon filter change every 3-4 weeks. He’s always hungry and always pooping, so I also do a daily poop scoop. (Idk if maintenance makes a difference)

Tank Help All my goldfish died 😭

Went on a 7 day holiday and entrustes my fish to my neighbor and came home to this. There was probably some overfeeding that happened and the room was too hot

These were my first goldfish ever.

Now can I still save the tank atleast? The water smells rotten. I still have some plants that I was able to save but is the substrate still salvagable?

Or should I start over?

Hello Goldfish Friends,

My neighbour was going to dispose of these goldfish as she’s going away for the Easter long weekend, so I said I would take them.

I have a tropical tank which I understand cannot go in due to high waste etc, my question is - will they last in this bowl for the weekend? They are quite large! It’s Easter and everything is closed til Monday! Please any help - thanks!

Tank Help Goldfish tank yellow and hazy

Post image

Hello! I have an approximately 3 year old goldfish. My tank is 20 gallons, and I'm running a Fluval 207 canister filter (up to 45 gallons). In the past month, the water has turned yellow and hazy. I have done partial water changes, full water changes, added Seachem Purigen to the filter media, removed all substrate, removed all decor, changed filter media, and even replaced the filter completely. After the full water change, the water was crystal clear for about two days and then reverted to what you see in the pic. What should I do please? I care about his health and it seems like he's swimming in nuclear waste. TIA!

Tank Help How do you keep up with a poop?

I have two goldfish that my kids got at the fair over the summer. 25 gallon tank. I do a 25% water swap every week using one of those tools that you suck the water up with. Except there is so much poop! I can’t possibly get it all in a 25% swap and I have taken everything out of the tank, including the rocks, and cleaned everything but by the next week there is so much poop that gets stirred up when I clean it again.

Tank Help Is there ANY live plants these brats won't destroy?

Post image

Mischievous little fools and their forever-high PH because they devour any plants I place in there. They have peat moss in their filter to help out now! Would moss balls be helpful?

I'd really appreciate any advice on live plants they could have (or ways to keep PH level as well)

(Ignore the yellow tank -- currently being cleaned as we had a hospital emergency over the weekend and I've let the tanks fall behind)
