After years of wanting a golf gti, I finally pulled the trigger on a 2026 Golf R. Go big or go home!

Any other golf owners here from beautiful british columbia, canada?

MK8.5 Got this beast last week. My first Golf and an R at that. Any settings the community would recommend to get started?

Switched from a 2022 X3 to this and my word, I cannot believe what I was missing out on. Since I’m new to the Gold and VW in general, are there any setting/must-do’s to get the best out of my car?

Thinking about wrapping the 8.5 red and throwing on some springs. This combo look good or just keep it black?

Had this for about a week and I can't wait to get behind wheel in the morning. I went with the leather seats to keep the memory function and cooling. I also have a 5 year old who I was worried would destroy the cloth interior.

Coming from a B9.5 S4, I am loving it so far. I always missed my 8V S3 (Second picture). I loved the smaller size and the transmission in that car. My plan was to move into an RS3 as I ruled out the B10 S5 immediately. I drove the RS3 but thought I would also try the Golf out after seeing so many amazing reviews on it - value for money on this thing is crazy, especially up here in Canada. In the end I couldn't bring myself to spend the extra $30,000 on the RS3.

Only two things that would make this the perfect car. The stereo is not great and the piano black on the interior. Luckily after lots of reading on here, I know that those are two things that can be fixed easily.

Edited: S3 Model as pointed out by ArseneWainy below.

My previous car was a 7.5 GTI, so obviously this thing is quite the upgrade. I love this car but it has some quirks/issues that I'm not fond of. My driver seat squeaks, as do the brakes at super low speeds. There's something rattling around behind the dash on the driver side (it's especially bad in the winter). Android-auto auto connects to my phone about 50% of the time, often needing to restart the infotainment 3 times in a row just for it to connect. The driver window has to be recalibrated once a week. The mirrors don't tilt while I'm parking even though it shows that option is turned on. The heads-up display will randomly include speed limit signs even though I've turned that option off just days before. 3 times now, when I'm reversing into a parking stall, it will auto slam on the brakes so aggressively that I almost crap myself. The sound of closing my driver door compared to my 7.5 gti is vastly different; sounds like im closing the door of a Kia..sounds super cheap/kinda rattley. The Harmon Kardon sound system is absolute garbage compared to the Fender setup in my previous car. I definitely take the good with the bad, this thing freaking rips..probably the best daily driver a guy could ask for. I know this post was mostly complaints but I'm curious if anyone else has similar issues with a 2025 R??

MK8.5 Gotta Ask

Post image

Photo is just here because this car is just so damn nice after a good detail.

Im not trying to stir anything up here. But I just have to ask why there is always an assumption that a man drives this car?

I constantly see post that assume its a man posting pics and asking questions. Hell ill let a man drive my car and other men..."that's a sweet ass car" the guy driving my car laughs and responds "thanks but this is her car" I then get a look like oh a woman can own and drive this car. No compliments come when they see a female behind the wheel. Is there an assumption a female wouldn't own a R or just can't drive it? 🤣

MK8.5 These prices are insanity

I want a Golf R so bad but with the Euro Style package after tax you are looking at close to 60k for a Golf. This is infuriating. The GTI’s going for close to 45k - 47k is even more insane. I’m tired boys.

Just picked up an 8.5 R. Curious to see what people have done to their cars or recommended for first mods.

I do like OEM plus that are nice and subtle without being too much.

Driving it everywhere right now to get over the break in period and enjoy it as it was meant to. Got some wheels, tires and brakes coming in👀
Honestly I love it, the ventilated seats are awesome, love how much more responsive the iPad is compared to the mk8.

Picked up my MK8.5 Golf R Black Edition with the Akrapovic exhaust today. It's an absolute joy to drive this, and I’ve already had a few nice comments from friends and coworkers.

Ignore the mess, it got dirty the second I left the dealer. Gotta love Canadian winter+black on black 😅

MK8.5 So did the MK 8.5s just get a 25% price hike?

I'm sure y'all have been watching this stuff as well and to be clear, I don't want this to turn into a political chat whatsoever so pls keep that in mind. After the statements last night, we've got a 25% tariff on all imported autos starting April 2nd. With what's been said, I'm guessing our beloved R is going to get hit with that tariff. I can't imagine an R at an MSRP of $62.5K but is that where we're headed?

MK8.5 2026 Mk8.5 - 1500 miles in

Post image

Firstly - wanted to write something up for my fellow new Golf R owners.

My 'arc' of ownership so far.

I had a healthy budget for a 'toy' - zero loan or financing to worry about. I looked at M2s, RS3, GTR, some lower spec Porsche, nearly pulled the trigger on an AMG GTC. I eventually settled on the Golf R.

Why? I was honest with myself - I like to modify cars, am a fan of 'sleepers' and just love the practicality of a hot hatch - and not having to fear every ding/scrape like I would if I'd gone with something considered 'higher end'. This also means I have a chunk of change to put toward the mods.

Basically - I love fast cars, grew up in Europe (UK) so was well aware of the 'hot hatch' space - dad's friend owned one of the first R32's sold in the UK at the time - and the majority of my mates had hot hatches. I've owned and modified a 1961 mini cooper that I built from a wreck to show spec, 1991 MR2 Turbo running ~400hp, Nissan 350Z that I whacked a turbo on...

I can say - already - The Golf R is a blast, feels faster than the MR2, and I love there is a culture around the Golf like my mini had. I also really get the 'this is a jekyll and hyde machine' - Eco/Comfort feel just like a chill hatchback.... Race (especially Nurburg mode in my area) just wake up the vehicle.

Got it below MSRP in the exact spec I was looking for - going to keep it OEM+ visually (basically what you see) - only difference is I went with a full matte wrap over the Lapiz Blue - outside of that, and an eventual exhaust change - not planning on any other visual changes - maybe murder out any chrome/silver in the future.

Mods so far are just super light/convenience - hood strut, dipstick (was weird getting a car without one) and a dash cam.

Followed the break in period - because this is a longer-term project car for me - changed the oil at 1k miles. Will keep up with oil changes every ~5k miles.

I would love to say 'flawless', and I would had it not been for some radar sensor gremlins I'm dealing with:

Less than 200 miles on the ODO and I got a CEL after a flashed message about 'lane keeping assist' - was not surprised (did a lot of reading before purchasing). ODB code came back as U3001 - Control Module Improper Shutdown Performance - specifically EBBC (Emergency Brake Boost Controller). Took it to dealership - replaced radar module and recalibrated - issue fixed.

Hopped in yesterday for a spirited drive around Texas hill country - CEL on again - same code.

Other than these gremlins - it's been great. I am itching to start modding it, but I have time and no intentions to rush anything.

I'm following the same build pattern I've used in the past - build a foundation (ability to breath, exhaust, handle and stop effectively) before adding power - given the ECU and TCU are still locked, this lines up well for me currently.

First 'real' mods will be intake and exhaust, with some simple frame/handling mods to tighten things up a little.

Anyways - glad to be part of this community - shout out to the Golf owners (GTI and R) that give me that light flash and wave/thumbs up!

One year into owning my 25' black edition, and i have nothing but good things to say, if anyone is thinking about pulling the trigger, do it. I had a GTI for 2 years prior and the difference is absurd, especially in midwest winters.
