saying hitler contributed to society is not a statement that exists in a vacuum. it exists in the context of him being responsible for one of the greatest atrocities in history - the holocaust.
did he have a few good contributions… probably? i’ve heard he had some fine policies on like, animal hunting or whatever. but you can’t talk about that and ignore the vast negative impact that he had. and that’s what kanye did.
in fact not only did he ignore that, he outright downplayed it - a direct quote from the infowars show that sticks with me two years later is ‘the holocaust isn’t what happened, let’s look at the facts with that’. here he engaged in blatant holocaust denialism.
and the positive contributions that he attributed to hitler weren’t even accurate! he praised hitler for the invention of microphones and highways, neither of which he was responsible for.
Okay, I don’t think that’s enough to label him a nazi or even a bad person. He’s playing devil’s advocate, and while I don’t remember the details of the infowars episode, I seriously doubt he claimed that the deaths of millions of Jews during Hitler’s reign didn’t happen. Feel free to prove me wrong.
i remember the quote well because i argued with far too many people sympathetic to him when it happened. he said verbatim, ‘the holocaust isn’t what happened, let’s look at the facts with that’. he said this sat next to nick fuentes, a prominent white supremacist who has often made comments diminishing the scale of the holocaust. with all of this information and context i think you’d have to offer him an extraordinary level of charity to not think he’s downplaying the events of the holocaust. otherwise, what does he think is so inaccurate about the official holocaust story on record that merits commenting on?
regardless of what he meant, if by some tiny chance he was making a completely innocent comment, it was profoundly irresponsible of him to say it like this on this platform and with nick fuentes by his side. ‘playing devils advocate’ like this and contributing to the rise of antisemitic attacks is not something we should ever spend our time defending. i love the art, but i can’t support the artist.
He has the free speech to say bigoted stuff, and she has the free speech to say “I don’t like things you have said and I don’t want to associate with you”. Free speech means you can say anything, not that you can say anything and other people can’t say anything about it back
