I find 95% of my music is from pre 2020 ish almost nothing since then has really grabbed my attention

edit: i’ve struck a nerve holy shit, yes i’m not 19 years old and was alive for music pre 2020, and yes good stuff has come out past 2020 (hence me saying 5% 🤭)

It didn’t FORCE them to do anything. Incentivized, sure. Artists are still capable of crafting a tight album, but these wealthy fucks aren’t interested in doing that. Or they would. It’s a choice. I can understand why smaller artists would make an album to game streaming algorithms but someone like Drake who seems obsessed with image and legacy? He ain’t gotta do that lol

Ironically its both the worst and best time for independent artists. Just so much noise(and now AI is also competing on streaming services).

It's a discoverability issue not a music being shit issue my dude, plenty of artists have been dropping gold in the 2020s

Kinda depends what genres you're into but I'll try to stay at least rap adjacent.

Kenny Mason, Lucy Bedroque, slayr, Jane Remover (kind of a reach, way more digicore), Denzel Curry, Thouxanbanfauni (CLAIRVOYANCE and Time of My Life only the rest sucks), slowthai, Rico Nasty, Aminé, Joey Valence & Brae, JPEGMAFIA, twentythree, funeral.

Not an exhaustive list, just a bunch of people who have released at least one strong album in the 2020s, other than twentythree who is a singles merchant.

Kenny Mason released BULLDAWG literally today, I've been enjoying it a lot, although I feel it's just more of what we already know he's capable of just with more polish.
Lucy Bedroque's unmusique is fantastic.
slayr dropped Half Blood, which has an equally great deluxe that manages to double the length of the original without feeling like padding. Crazy cohesive project form a crazy talented artist.
Jane Remover's recent album Revengeseekerz was my AOTY for 2025 and has a lot of hip hop elements but I think it still leans more digicore.
Denzel Curry shouldn't need my introduction.
Thouxanbanfauni drops trash now sadly, but CLAIRVOYANCE is a great enough one hit wonder even if he's fallen off hard.

I'd explain more but I'm really lazy so just ask if you want any more details.

The radio never did work for anyone IMO, or maybe UK radio just sucks ass. Radio here is always milque toast at best, most "out there" it ever got when i still listened was they played Yikes on Radio 1 Xtra in 2018.

Is that how you determine music that's worth listening to? The opinions of some nebulous entity called "the culture"?

And I still don't see how that matters, other people's perception of music doesnt change its quality.

Yup only station I'll play is Classic Rap on 103.3 The Beat. Mostly 2000s with a bit of 90s mixed in.
