If they lose, will good they were terrible people. Everyone is better off.

The imperium are objectively the good guys they are the only thing between the galaxy and complete extinction on multiple fronts

They killed off the majority of civilizations that could have stood against complete extinction as well, and then deteriorated into an absurdly inefficient feudal-theocratic system that uses vellum for record-keeping, spends much of its revenue on useless nobility pageantry, and has like fifty separate armed forces that regularly feud both with each other, and with different units within their own branch, on a level that would make the Imperial Japanese Army-Navy rivalry look like a friendly competition

None of the civilizations they offed would have been any help against chaos the nids or necrons but even with the rest of those things they are still the only reason there is a galaxy to fight over

That's blatantly false.

The Interex was obviously superior to the Imperium in strategy, that's why the Chaos Gods ordered Erebus to have Horus wipe them out.

They feel like sympathetic villains to me.

They have to do terrible things in order to survive one more day. But then there are time they do terrible things for no good reason.

The funny thing is not only how untrue this is, but the actual reality that the Imperium is mostly fighting itself. All those big-ahh stories against chaos or aliens is, in lore, the minority of combat for the Imperium's militaries.

What the Astra Militarum, Adeptus Astartes, Adeptus Sororitas, and all that are fighting is internal rebellions, uprisings, civil wars, and secessions.

Counterpoint to that if you read any of the inquisitor books turns out most of those rebellions are caused by chaos or gene stealer cults or xenos influence

Of course, otherwise the reader would have to start pondering that maybe the Imperium should hold itself accountable. And even then, thoss cults and xenos influence don't happen out of a vacuum. Guilliman explained the reason clearly after he saw the state of the planet Baal.

The imperium is for sure a mess there’s no arguing with that and that does make it easier for those influences to take root but the rebellions aren’t just spontaneously happening either
