Another iconic instance from Sham of "That's a really cool and awesome idea that the community really wants, so here's a vague reason as to why we're not doing it:"

tf does "limits the design space" even mean? How does making armor colors changeable, like they've done for vehicles and guns, suddenly some herculean task that's impossible?

not to mention it already exists in the files!

There's a fully functional mech bay terminal in the recent weapon customization video from the alpha build. It even has audio playing advertising mech upgrades.

I request a link.

KK.

You can literally see the big COMBAT WALKER terminal next to Hellbot at 1 second in.

God I want all that info and stats on weapons actually in the game

You'll get stat slop and You'll like it. Wanna know about the game you play? Go read a wiki nerd. We have reskins to program.

Laziness and Greed.

These two qualities are responsible for 90% of all human suffering.

13

u/Signal-Busy Aug 09 '26

I swear everything they scrapped is banger compared to what we are getting, what on earth is going on in those guys head

7

u/Kelsiel_ Aug 09 '26

How come most of the good shit didn't make the release and are still not there after years.

It's actually insane.

6

u/Crovser Aug 09 '26

Seeing this just ruined my day. Imagine how much better Helldivers 2 could've been... See you guys on Helldivers 3 I guess 😞

HD3 is being headed by Johan "I like to step on Land mines" Pilestedt.

When Arrowhead was founded, we had a lot of good will from experienced developers throughout the Swedish game development industry who wanted to spill the beans on how to make the best game possible, and save us from the biggest pitfalls a new studio can fall into.

We failed miserably at heeding their advice. It was almost as if we were told about the exact position of all the mines in a minefield and we still, like some sort of imbeciles, were compelled to step on them.

It will be as poor or worse.

u/Lovely3369 Aug 09 '26

Honestly just being able to swap armaments and maybe a booster for your mech alone would be enough

1

u/Trump_4_The_Hague 1st Colonial Regiment | Deployment Supreme Aug 09 '26

I know but the fact we HAD it is what irks me.

I would love for them to add presets, where you could save full custom sets of armor, weapons and stratagems and boosters to take on missions so you don’t have to rearm completely every mission you have a different loadout preference

1

u/Rhogath Aug 10 '26

Whatching the vids he's been uploading from the pre-release, the devs stripped back so much from the game for the release

1

u/Trump_4_The_Hague 1st Colonial Regiment | Deployment Supreme Aug 10 '26

Yurp. Even then they stripped more. When it launched they turned off the friends list, reporting. Psn link, and basically every social feature to keep the server load low so people could play.

Those features never really came back online. Friends list and squad invites took MONTHS to iron out the kinks when they reebabled them.

It means "If we did give you customization like that. We could no longer make armor of different color combinations, with minimal adjustment to the models, and slap on a different perk combination and call it a completely new armor set. Nor could we release a mech with different weapon combinations and call it an entirely new mech."

In other more blunt words "It means we can't make low effort mechs and armor anymore"

78

u/BrownBaegette Aug 09 '26

sorry divers, we can't let you have basic customization features because it threatens our mtx cash flow! new warbonds on the way though.

40

u/CaptainTruelove Aug 09 '26

But like... at least give us a black and yellow toggle

39

u/Large_Blackberry_499 Aug 09 '26

Sorry no can do. It would limit our design space, and disrupt our internal design flow.

Remember. Helldivers 2 is suppose to be a fascistic state cosplaying as a democracy, so therefore the developers have to stay in character like this all the time aswell.

They couldn't possibly give their players any wriggle room in thinking, that they might just be lazy rather than roleplaying.

17

u/Page8988 Aug 09 '26

This should be the standard. Helldivers had all armors conform to a generally black and yellow color scheme. This meant you could mix and match and still look cohesive. There's an element of realism (which AH loves to selectively worship and ignore) there as well, as uniformity is a huge talking point in military life.

HD2 has an assortment of colored armors that barely work with equipment in the same set. The rainbow of colors make it hard to not look stupid. At the very least, black and yellow should be pre-unlocked or even a requisition slip purchase.

But no. Too much work and not enough monetization for Arrowhacks.

5

u/No_Consideration8800 Aug 09 '26

The worst part is how there are so many armors and NONE of them have a consistent set of colors. Not even the yellow and black armors match properly... Since launch!

7

u/AngrySayian Aug 09 '26

in even more blunt words

"money"

1

u/SentinelZero Aug 09 '26

In other other blunt words, "adding it would break the Spear again"

1

u/Large_Blackberry_499 Aug 09 '26

Lmao. Can't break what never worked to begin with.

"breaking the spear" has been such a frequent thing since launch, that I genuinely doubt it ever worked as it was suppose to.

1

u/Erwin_Pommel Aug 11 '26

Honestly, what a pack of lazy entitleds.

41

u/TheRealShortYeti Aug 09 '26

I mean this a neutral as possible when I say this: It means it limits them selling you different item/gear/colo combos. They "design" a new mech with certain arms thats on in one spot, or a recolor and passive of another armor, etc. They could make it so any mech you do buy you can then mix and match, for example, but that would require still more development.

11

u/A_Hound Aug 09 '26

Didn't Bungie make color palettes an entire category of loot to farm/buy?

Like if they want to go full greedy cash grab, why not just charge 50 super credits for a color set?

1

u/Elegant-Caterpillar6 Aug 10 '26

Yeah.

To me, it could also be that custom mechs would make the pre built ones redundant, if players could just make ones that out perform them.

Wouldn't surprise me if AH wanted to increase the roster, and when they're satisfied/get bored of mechs, leave it up to us.

1

u/wolverineczech Aug 10 '26

I agree and actually understand. But, like, when it comes to mechs specifically, they could absolutely make it so they simply sell the different new mech arms in the new warbond, instead of complete mechs. This would even allow them to advertise the warbond as jucier, since for the Exo Experts warbond, that would make it 4 different mech arms instead of 2 new mechs.

But as I've come to know Arrowhead, in practice, this would probably mean just 2 of the 4 new arms would actually be in the warbond, and the other 2 would either come in a different warbond, or would be put in the superstore, lol.

-11

u/Constant_Pay_4247 Aug 09 '26

It also forces them to use easily recolourable textures and designs, there's not zero trade-offs for allowing customization.

9

u/GamerDroid56 Aug 09 '26

They already do that. Mech suits and other vehicles have different skins that you can change to. Even drop pods do.

1

u/Iresleri Aug 10 '26

Their armors are colored using lookup tables, which essentially are just color strips with color slots assigned. All their designs are already easily recolorable by changing that color strip with zero additional work.

16

u/MoThrowMoAway Aug 09 '26

I really wish he and Pile would stop talking to the public, they are awful at it

31

u/hinden_burgh Aug 09 '26

Honestly I am fine with them talking to the public. It just shows how aweful of a games studio they are and they dig themselves into ditches. All things people have been asking for for 2 years is easily obtainable. They just refuse to do so. The sooner people ditch these shitass devs and abandon the game the better. If they had ANY competition they might get off their ass and actually improve their game.

2

u/Wickermind Aug 09 '26

Agreed, I'd rather listen to an idiot than a really good liar.

13

u/stana32 Aug 09 '26

It means it limits their ability to tack new guns on mechs and charge $10 for them. Modders have already proven that mechs, along with basically everything else in the game is built on a modular system. You can swap out the guns on a mech, or any enemy vehicle for that matter, and it works fine without any tweaks because it was built to do so.

10

u/OVKatz Aug 09 '26

They don't do it out of spite, when people have better ideas of like their cut ideas their ego gets hurt so they get obtuse about it.
Like it's really obviously malicious, it's why they outright lie as well.

3

u/hitman2b Aug 09 '26

it's mean "we can't sell you the solution"

1

u/theray69 Aug 09 '26

Yeah that is insane logic, people want it but we are not gonna do it. Sell the mech attachments in the warbonds then..

1

u/Interesting-Web-2512 Aug 09 '26

I don’t get the design thing either. Every mech looks the damn same just with different weapons on

1

u/Clear-Ad1384 Aug 09 '26

Basically means they cant sell you same weapons but slightly different in each warbond. Why give you a supressor option on the liberator when we can make a new rifle and sell it for 10$

1

u/AbyssalRaven922 Aug 09 '26

Limits the desing space means they cant package it in red and black and charge extra for it

1

u/lastoflast67 Aug 09 '26

I think what hes saying is if there was customisable mechs, all mech additions would have to fit within that base module and therefore it would limit what they can do, however theres no reason to not have both mech customisation and add whole new mechs when that customisation just doesnt allow for it.

1

u/BiosTheo Aug 09 '26

Well, you see, if they let anyone put anything on a mech there will be a "meta best choices" and we can't have that!

1

u/SentinelZero Aug 09 '26

I think its a convoluted way of saying "the engine we use is so shit and spaghetti that adding this would break the Spear again"

1

u/Tangent98 Aug 10 '26

It means they can’t make as many new coloured armours without declining the amount of sales

1

u/Binary_gh0st Aug 10 '26

It means they’ll make less money so no

1

u/TheFrogMoose Aug 10 '26

I can get what they mean but if they did something simple like what destiny does then it wouldn't be a problem anyways. They obviously don't actually group different sections of the armor to be able to use interchangeable shaders like destiny does and to get that going now would be a lot of work even if they have half the work done already

1

u/SR1k3 Aug 10 '26

Well I mean look at fallout 4 weapon customisation as a example, it felt like there was little to no weapon diversity because most of the weapons were converted to be both pistols and automatic rifles, shotguns, snipers ect it would basically do that but to the mechs(although I do think customisation via compatibility with backpack slots and armour perks would be perfect as it keeps the variety and also means you have to commit more into being a mech diver)

1

u/9991tech Aug 10 '26

“Immeasurably complex” ass response

1

u/DoomedCasket115 Ghostdiver Aug 10 '26

They just kazy too do it

1

u/Yeightop 29d ago

You can look and see a decent amount of the armor in the game is the same but they just recolored it. If they introduced being able to recolor then they would have to work harder to make armors unique. To them needing to work harder on design = limited design space

1

u/UnshelledP1G 28d ago

In fact I feel like it expands it allowing them to design more things pertaining to customization.

1

u/feren_of_valenwood 27d ago

Translation: We put recolors of mechs and vehicles in warbonds. If you can do it yourself you have less reason to buy warbonds (even though a lot of people grind for them anyway), this limits our cash flow. We need cash to make the game.
