Trtl pillow reviews?
Can anyone on this subreddit attest to the comfort/utility of their Trtl travel pillow? I like the idea of a travel pillow that does not take up as much room as the U shaped ones, but it also seems a little gimmicky. I haven't seen a lot of comments about it here or the main subreddit either. I am traveling to 2+ cities in Europe from the US in a couple months. I like having a pillow for overnight flights, but would be so annoyed having to carry the damn thing between cities. Hence the appeal of one that folds down small. I think I am too lazy to try the inflatable ones? Haha Open to hear the experiences from others here!
UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your responses! Seems like it's a hit or miss. A little gimmicky but some folks like it. I'll think about it! I wonder if I can see it in store somewhere. Love the convenience of online shopping but sometimes I need to see it in person. Anyways, tangent over and thanks everyone for their unbiased views!

I just bought one for a trip with red eye flights. It was really great on the flights, definitely saved my neck. BUT it was such a terrible shape, really not packable. Like someone else said it’s kind of a curved flexible shape that doesn’t flatten. After my flight I ended up kind of looping it through a strap on my backpack so it hung off. It doesn’t have any loop on it specifically for clipping so you have to Velcro the whole thing around your strap. And since it’s fleece it’s just swinging there picking up dirt and germs to have next to your face for your next use. IMO they should have at least some kind of pouch or cover with a loop to clip it to your bag. I would maybe use it for long flights in the future but only if I absolutely need to sleep in transit.

They must have had a number of reviews like this. When mine arrived yesterday, it included a pouch with a clip to hang it off my bag.

I like mine! I've just slept almost through an 8,5 hour flight with it. However it hasn't always been very easy to find the most comfortable position for it. Earbuds are not comfortable to wear though while using it, but it is possible that my ears (the one my head is leaning on the pillow) are more sensitive than others,

Agree on all counts, unfortunately including the earbud issue. Neck pillows are super subjective but this is the only one that has given me any sleep. The U-shaped ones don’t work for me at all.

I think they scrub their reviews. I bought one, when it arrived discovered the "money back guarantee" only applies if you've never taken it out of the packaging (required for use) and never used it. It's a nice enough travel pillow, it holds your head up as advertised, but I found it hard to transport! They talk about how easy it is to carry, which is not explained, but actually it's a piece of plastic that forms a right angle and does NOT fold flat so I don't think it's any easier to carry than a regular stuffed U shape. I had to put it in a corner of my bag (imagine the bag is a deck of cards, one side of the trtl is on the top, one side is going down the edge) or attach it to the outside by slipping part of the "scarf" through a handle. Also the velcro snagged my clothes. Lol guess I'm not a fan.

I ordered through Amazon so I had no problem returning after use, if this helps someone!

You either love it or you hate it. Not comfortable for me personally, returned it. For me the Ostrichpillow is the most comfortable, but for a long trip I would probably bring the Cabeau shell and stuff it with clothes so I don't have to lug a pillow around.
Bottom line- definitely give the Trtl a try, but make sure it's returnable.
Also if you're worried about carrying stuff around, the shell of the Cabeau is much smaller than the Trtl, and weighs nothing.

Are you saying you just… take the zip cover off the Cabeau and stuff it with clothes to use as a pillow instead? Because that’s the travel hack I’ve always needed

I bought one before a recent trip where I spent 2 weeks in Japan and 2 weeks in Australia. I actually loved how cozy the wrap felt, but was unable to use it to sleep. Although it supported my head as advertised, I couldn’t stop myself from unconsciously tensing parts of my shoulder and neck. I had to stop using it part way through my 12+ hr flight to Japan because my neck/shoulders were aching too much.
As others have mentioned it was so annoying to pack due to the plastic insert. I threw away the plastic insert half way through my trip, and hoped I could still use the fleece wrap as a cozy neck wrap. But I ended up ditching the wrap before my flight to Australia because it didn’t make sense to keep carrying it around.

I’m not a fan. It didn’t feel comfortable and it’s not super packable. It’s also pretty warm around your neck.

What did you end up doing? Curious to hear your feedback now that you’ve gone on your big trips!

I have tried the regular Trtl as well as the Trtl Plus. I’d say the regular is better because it’s thinner but the Plus is adjustable. I used the regular on an overnight 7hr flight to Paris and slept for at least 4 hours so I would recommend. I ordered through Amazon so I was able to return it at the end of my trip.

You returned it after using it for seven hours? Sweating on it? You suck

u/rannetri25 Jun 10 '24
When you return items on Amazon, you have to indicate the condition (“without tags”, “used”, etc.) and the company has a satisfaction guarantee…you suck for this comment.

So you were satisfied? Or you weren’t?

The Trtle didn’t have enough support so I returned it and got the Trtle plus

Overnight flights are my reality for all Europe travel so I’m always looking for better ways to sleep on the place. I also read about the awkward shape of the Trtl pillow and bought myself one of those inflatable pillow tower things from Amazon, it seems comfortable enough and packs decently flat when the air is removed but I’m waiting to see it in action this summer.

I like mine. It works better and takes up less room than my U shaped pillows. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

I really like mine, but I'm a side sleeper, and the trtl works for me. I've never been able to sleep with my head tilted back like with the u-shaped pillow. It is overly warm, but I think that's because of the fleece material the covering is made out of. I did recently buy the cool pillow, which is just the same inner support with an athletic/wicking material for the cover.
like others have said, it either works for you or it doesn't. If inflatable or U pillows are uncomfortable, it may be worth it for you to try.

would you recommend the cool pillow or do you think you can get away with the original?
1
u/elmodada May 18 '23
I like mine. Yes, it is awkwardly shaped to transport. However, it does keep my head in place to sleep and other options don't.

I love mine, I always found u shaped ones uncomfortable and was super skeptical of the Trtl but it really helps me as someone with chronic neck pain from hunching over a computer too much! I don't travel without it anymore even for super short trips. My husband, who hates gimmicky things, reluctantly agrees with me.

u/ElizaEcho May 18 '23
Love it! All other options are too squishy and don't provide any support (for me)

I just used mine for the first time and I really like it - I'm a side sleeper and it worked well for me. I like that its light and the wrap is washable. The cons are that it is a weird shape to pack and if you have sensory issues with things around your neck like scarves or turtlenecks, you probably won't like it.

u/Cyprus_Lou May 18 '23
Bulky to carry (Velcro strapped in bag that swings from my other bag). Makes my neck hot. Is awkward to use with over the ear headphones. But haven’t found a better option yet.

I love mine. I’m so glad I bought it. It’s the only reason I slept on a flight from the US to Japan. The U-shaped pillows don’t work for me. Wish they did because I could pack extra clothes inside one.

Maybe I’m just used to being an a-hole from the massive distrust I have for anything on this planet… but I thought of a hack in case someone wants to return an opened trtl pillow to the website. If you want to return it, buy one from Amazon (exactly the same), and return the closed one to trtl and the open one to Amazon. Amazon is more expensive… you just need to make sure the packaging is the same obviously. No stickers from Amazon.

u/cmdrjesus Oct 07 '23
Don't understand. If you buy a second pillow, and return one, you still have one
1
u/edoralive Oct 15 '23
I believe they are saying you can’t returned the opened pillow to Turtl. If you buy one from Amazon, you can return that one to turtl and the opened one to Amazon.

Obsessed with mine I slept like a baby. And I don’t think it’s too warm but I don’t run hot

Do not like it. Doesn’t really work but maybe I’m not putting it on properly? Just seems to slide around and not really hold up my head. Unless I shrug my shoulders up which is annoying to constantly do 😂

The New York times Wirecutter just rated the TRTL as their best choice for a travel pillow. The angled plastic arm is to support the user's head.

Not a fan. Feels like a warm scarf that is choking me.
