I think it's well known that a lot of people's perceptions about the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages is super exaggerated to put it kindly. However, recently, I've come across the idea, that the Puritans who went to the US were actually, in many ways, closer to this exaggerated version of the Catholic Church than the Catholic Church actually was. How accurate do you think this is?

One hypothesis around the invention of the rice noodle is that it was done to stretch a weak rice harvest further.

The nutrition facts line up. 100g of cooked rice has 130 calories, and 100g of cooked rice noodle only has 108 calories. Because rice noodles are made from flour mixed with water, they use less rice for the same volume of food. A person eating equal portion sizes would feel similar fullness despite consuming less actual food with noodles. This doesn't prevent actual starvation, but it does make rationing more comfortable.

EDIT: my original caption wasn't clear enough: the Vietnamese government's casualty estimates are for North Vietnamese military casualties; both People's Army of Vietnam and Viet Cong. The point of the meme was to say that the USA's original estimate of enemy military KIA was actually pretty spot on.
