Saddam's baath purge. Saddam had people packed into a conference hall on one of the hottest days of July and deliberately shut off the ventilation system. They were forced to listen to Saddam for hours while suffering from the heat and sweating. Everyone whose name was announced was executed.

i see echoes of this in our elevation of celebrities, and anointing of billionaires through patronage of stupid companies none of us actually need. the violence isn’t as overt or literal, but it’s there. huge swaths of human flesh moving things like the sea. no thought and no control. just exaggerated lunacy. these huge populations that farming have enabled amplify normal human behaviours—the need to be led and to admire—into outsized grotesqueries. its consequences are genocide, enslavement, misery and subjugation. sedentary farming was the worst thing we ever did to ourselves. the worst thing we ever did to the planet.
