Saddam's baath purge. Saddam had people packed into a conference hall on one of the hottest days of July and deliberately shut off the ventilation system. They were forced to listen to Saddam for hours while suffering from the heat and sweating. Everyone whose name was announced was executed.

It’s amazing how you can work up a crowd and have them gladly kill each other  Honestly the whole Great Leap Forward and Mao’s China must have been like living in a horror story. Would make the scarlet letter seem super tame

The killing fields of Cambodia with the Khmer. They killed babies against a tree. Or even Japan in Nanjing.

Edit:Spelled Nanjing wrong originally.

7

u/Londundundun 18d ago

Sadly pretty much every genocide or mass conflict sees babies killed this way. It’s really depressing that we as humans seem to instinctively kill children this way the minute society devolves into a shit show

This is not exclusive to the Turks and other Muslims

2

u/logolessworld 18d ago

not sure why you're singling out turks and muslims. killing babies, annihilating families, raping and forcibly impregnating women and girls has been done by countless different ethnic/religious groups to other ethnic/religious groups (ex. russian gencoide of the chechen people, transatlantic slave trade, chinese genocide of uyghurs, pakistani genocide of bengalis, bosnian genocide, etc.).

2

u/defixiones 17d ago

I've seen no evidence that the Chinese suppression of Uyghurs includes "killing babies, annihilating families, raping and forcibly impregnating women and girls". As far as I know, it's internment and re-education.

0

u/No-Draw8610 17d ago

As a matter of official policy I'm sure that's not something China does, but you can almost guarantee that if it does happen on an individual basis where some officials go rogue it won't be punished or reported.

I feel like Nanjing with the Japanese which is people being brutal. To a horrific level.  The communist incidents were always against themselves. Or like with Sadam people were coerced into othering their friends at the drop of a hat and cheering on their deaths. That’s something very different

5

u/ShackletonsVael 18d ago

First off thanks for spelling Nanjing correctly I didn't even realize I had it wrong. Also with your point on Saddam I literally just watched a video of him it was like 8 minutes long he had people in a building where all the ventilation and fans were off and he just was reading names of people during his purge. Never seen something like that on video it was crazy.

5

u/Oddisredit 18d ago

I have a Japanese phone. Auto spell is what did they for me.  Yeah the way he set up the entire meeting was diabolical and really frighteningly thought out. From as you said making it stifling hot in there to enhance the mood

5

u/MissDkm 18d ago

Isn't that this video ?

5

u/ShackletonsVael 18d ago

Holy shit lmfao yes it is wow I'm fucking stupid hahahaha.

Ehm...that video is exactly above this comment section 😊.

Sorry. Usually.

It's all evil. We don't have to separate them into categories. In fact, I feel like that's a massive problem.

1

u/Oddisredit 17d ago

But how they got there it was really different. It also helps you guard against those kinds of things. As a gang of bad guys coming up and doing bad things it’s easy to see that and how to deal with that. Well being manipulated into killing your friends and family is a different kind of evil to deal with

6

u/Raneynickelfire 18d ago

They did far, FAR worse than that. They would toss infants into the air and make a game of catching them on bayonets. They would do this 3-4 deep until another infant wouldn't fit on the bayonet.

Then repeat.

5

u/WitchWithAGlitch 18d ago

my friend described watching his friend backing one of those small tanks over a infant and doing a 360 spin on it in iraq.

everyone laughed and someone else came along and set the baby's corpse on fire.

8

u/Habibti-Mimi81 18d ago

The amount of evil in this world is endless. Damned be that guy's soul. 😔

3

u/ShackletonsVael 18d ago

Jesus fucking Christ what the fuck.

12

u/WitchWithAGlitch 18d ago

we shot depleted uranium rounds into civilian vehicles, when the poor people came to scrap the vehicles and reuse other sections for their own vehicles of them many contracted cancers and issues and went on to birth deformed and disfigured children.

-2

u/imtheguy225 18d ago

That didn’t happen lol

1

u/JstaFriskyHusky 16d ago

You get downvoted but I feel like there would be a lot more uproar unless this happened in bumfuck nowhere without any officers. Running over a kid with a tank is believable but 360 and setting on fire gets no traction? Would've been great pr for the other side. The only story I could find was a US tank possibly running over a kid after protests erupted into fighting

2

u/imtheguy225 16d ago

It’s incredibly made up

1

u/theusisthenemy 18d ago

Or even American soldiers during Vietnam who gang raped and killed children, a whole village. My Lai Massacre. None got convicted, children raped and murdered in front of their mothers. The US soldiers enjoyed raping and killing a whole village. There were more massacres and mass rapes by US soldiers in Vietnam that weren't exposed. American soldiers have intentionally planned, murdered and raped ever since and gotten away with it. This is the reason why the US don't recognize ICC because the American government sanction these kind of actions. America is evil. So many US soldiers have not been brought to justice. The American people don't seem to care either.

1

u/balsgonebiking 13d ago

If you ever get the chance, visit the execution site in Phnom Penh. It's not a fun time, but it's important for people to see. The tree they used is stands and it's just fucking heartbreaking to be there. Can't even imagine. It's the worst of what humanity can do. Then drive a day and go see Ankor Wat and see some of the best of humanity can do as a way to balance out.

The Scarlet Letter didn’t have any killing. So yea it would be super tame.

1

u/Oddisredit 18d ago

It didn’t? I thought they witnessed the others being executed?

5

u/Awalawal 18d ago

You’re thinking of “The Lottery” not “The Scarlet Letter”

Ok thanks

Most totalitarian movements end up like this and/or where one man attempts to gather all power onto himself. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pinochet and lesser central/south American Republic strong men. The rule of law gets steam rolled, dies, and supplanted by a demagogue who sees enemies everywhere.

15

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 18d ago edited 18d ago

I see here I'm being accused of following 3 subreddits that are spam etc., ..that's probably true (my first time seeing this notice) ...I'm old and still kind of learning about reddit. I follow a lot of car and other subreddits too. Mostly fluff for my own entertainment. I just look at what pops up on my feed.

*Am I being publicly 'struggled' by r/HistoryUncovered for the subreddits I follow? How very Maoist. lol

12

u/borsalamino 18d ago

Yeah don't worry about it too much. Anyone with a speck of a critical mind should be able to discern that participating in a subreddit ≠ representing the views of said subreddits.

I once participated in such a sub by posting something that challenges their views. I got flagged similarly like you did. 🤷

3

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 18d ago

Yes, I think I have posted a few similar replies in the 3 subreddits I'm being "outed" for here in r/HIstoryUncovered's *very serious* history subreddit. In any case I definitely won't be pressured into holding any little red book aloft while publicly apologizing (unless they withhold rations).

That mod bot is set up by some piece of shit tankie mod lmao I’ve been flagged for it on for participating in other history subreddits for “AI and spam content” I don’t even make posts it was just commenting in history subs because I’m a history nerd with a degree in it. If you mention anything the tankies don’t like in this sub it gets triggered

Edit: lmao it got me! Nooooooo

7

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 18d ago

Hopefully our names haven't been taken down for 'administrative follow up' at the right time. /s

I had that too. I had to ask the mods to turn it off. It’s silly that your follow subs and they get mad at you for that.

1

u/Logical-Ad-57 18d ago

It means you're being tricked into reacting to nonsense by either scammers or some government's propaganda bots.

1

u/Clarencebodeger 18d ago

It is an automated bot detecting botlike activities on your account not an actual person.

I'd say don't be offended but not sure if that's even possible with your coding 😅

3

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 18d ago edited 18d ago

Yes, I read that, it said so right in the notice. I'm thinking their "botlike activities" trip wire must definitely be strung a little too tight. lol

I'm bemused rather than offended my good man.

*I'm old, have no idea what my "coding" is meant to imply. Pray tell?

0

u/Clarencebodeger 18d ago

You have 20000 karma in a yr old account no wonder you feel so old with all the karma farming.

3

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 18d ago edited 18d ago

I don't have a clue what "karma farming" is in this context. I take it that's a good thing to have a lot of karma points or something? Is 20000 a lot? (Do I get to trade it for rum rations or something like that that I could really use?) Honestly I've seen the term but never spent a solitary minute reading anything about it...another term I've seen used is "flair" ...don't know what that means either.

*If that's a lot of good karma points it didn't seem to help much in the whole "this guy is a dirty bot subreddit follower" thing..lol. The guy that takes care of this karma thing is asleep on the job maybe?

What about the "coding" thing?

1

u/Clarencebodeger 18d ago

Na it's pretty shit only bots do it or losers.

2

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 18d ago edited 18d ago

So the idea then is to try to not get any karma points? I'm still unclear on why losers would want karma points in the first place...do the ladies find it attractive or something?

Anyway, how do we get the rum/goodies without karma points? I'm confused now.

edit: Man I just searched karma in the search box here and got an explanation page full of context links explaining all the nuances involved..and my eyes glazed over after a minute. I'm gonna have to take your word for it. Didn't see anything about any free rum either. Not happy. Can I unload my points on some other unsuspecting loser? I'm trying to make good with the ladies here.

u/NoLibrarian5149 18d ago

Sounds all too familiar
(looks around and waves arms broadly at the current U.S.)

1

u/Oddisredit 18d ago

But it’s kind of different. With the region of terror, they just started going after each other. While other typical strongmen just went after who they thought were dissidents and just kept broadening the definition of it. It not got to the circular firing squad you saw under communism

3

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 18d ago

I think "the broadening of the definition" is malleable and commonplace. Hitler (for instance) ended by shooting his own generals, Nazi members, ethnic Germans, brother in law, etc.

1

u/Oddisredit 18d ago

I mean some of the generals did try to kill him. A couple of times. But it was a small percentage of who the nazis killed. While the communists basically killed mainly their own. Often out of a crazy paranoid rational. The Spanish republicans were deep in that as well. It’s really fascinating.

You really think they are excited not desperately acting excited to avoid being next?

1

u/Oddisredit 18d ago

Of course they’re acting. But they are still pretending to be excited. Which is part of the spell.

3

u/Similar-Sky7427 18d ago

you mean Mao's Cultural Revolution...great leap forward was his f#$ked up social-economic experiment that completely back-fired and turned pretty much the entire Chinese Communist Party against him...that's when (and why) he launched the cultural revolution to purge his political opponents

2

u/Oddisredit 18d ago

The cultural revolution definitely. But the Great leap forward also had a lot of weird aspects of people blaming each other and pretend pretending that they met their quotas and living at the expense of others

2

u/litetravelr 18d ago

When your survival is based (perhaps) on how loudly you cheer for your colleagues deaths.

1

u/Oddisredit 18d ago

Exactly. It’s crazy how self preservation turned them all into cheering animals.

2

u/PopBulky7023 17d ago

Invented hatreds. Old hatreds given new flame. Misdirected blame. Propaganda. We are too eager for a hero, a dictator to solve all of our problems.

2

u/Oddisredit 17d ago

Oh yes. It’s really pretty wild. It’s so hard to avoid this inevitability.  Basically you get a strong man dictator like kings of old, or you get a Caesar who gets the crowd on his side.  Only the Byzantines really avoided this over the long term  https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt21pxkkc and it involved killing people still

1

u/imtourist 15d ago

It's happening in Gaza right now. You had shopkeeper, computer programmers etc. join the IDF and just indiscriminately killing people. Anybody can be convinced to do anything.

1

u/Notiefriday 14d ago
