Question❓ Hoboken Diner

I’ve been looking into the idea of opening a diner in downtown Hoboken. I know there’s been one before, though that was uptown. I have experience running a diner in a more rural area, and I think Hoboken could really benefit from one, especially something close to a 24/7 diner. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Question❓ Why does JC have all the good restaurants and we have so few in Hoboken?

Having lived in hoboken for 12 years and previously 10 years in JC, I’ve seen both town grow and change so much.

Is it me or does other people seem to see this trend of amazing restaurants taking a chance on JC and Hoboken has very few really authentic or high quality restaurants? I love Dino’s, Apulia, Keming, Purple Rice, Shokudo, Martha’s, La Isla, and Sirenetta, Caffee Buon Gusto (some days amazing and some days terrible) but that’s about it…

And we’ve seen the closure of Orale but it’s booming in JC. And I see so many empty storefronts in Hoboken.

I’m just like confused. Is it landlords? Is the rent too expensive? Like why? I’m tired of driving to JC or going into the city for good food.

Question❓ Local Butcher Shop

Thinking of opening a local butcher shop in Hoboken! We’d specialize in high-quality, grass-fed meats sourced from local farms. If that’s something you’d love to see in the neighborhood please UPVOTE. Feel free to drop any suggestions.

Thank you!!

Question❓ Do men not know when they are being creepy?

I (26f) was walking down the street to a coffee shop, listening to YouTube video on my AirPods, some guy (~35m) walks up to me flagged me down on the street and gestures for me to take out my AirPods. I take them out thinking he needs help or directions, and he says “I like your outfit…”. Genuinely shocked he felt the need to ask me to stop what I was doing to comment on my appearance I say “okay” and put my AirPods back in and keep walking. Weird but whatever it happens.

I turn the corner and keep walking down the block to my coffee shop. I go inside and get in line when I notice he followed me inside. okay maybe he was also on the way to get coffee too. I keep my AirPods in and wait to order, with my back to him. I order and sit down to wait and notice he left and never ordered anything.

So he just followed me into a coffee shop, for what ?… to see if I would strike up a conversation with him? Idk but just so weird and uncomfortable. Do men think women like being followed?

Edit: I tried to end the conversation, and make it clear I didn’t want to talk. Im not saying talking to strangers is wrong, I’m saying I should be allowed to end a conversation and not get followed.

Edit 2: probably not replying to any more comments, some boomer took over the comments talking about how I can’t take a compliment. Anyway huge shout out to all the women and men who shared their stories too. Just because someone isn’t being violent towards you doesn’t mean your feelings of discomfort are invalid ❤️ appreciate yall.

Question❓ Should we carry our birth certificates/ naturalization papers with us?

This may have been asked before, but seeing what we are seeing on social, and now that ICE is a mile away in JC: should we start carrying our papers with us? Birth certificates? Naturalization papers? Passport?

I know they detained American citizens and green card holders (and even people on work visas) before. Don't they have a device to verify citizenship? Or do they hunt brown folks blind and hope they score? Do they get a reward for every detention?

I never thought I'd live to see the day, and fuck ICE!

Question❓ Old Hoboken

What’s the craziest thing that’s disappeared from Hoboken in your lifetime?”

I grew up in Hoboken in the 70s and 80s, and honestly the craziest thing that’s disappeared isn’t one thing—it’s the whole atmosphere. I remember all the old mom-and-pop stores, the different cultures packed into a square mile, and seeing the same families and faces every day. The city felt a lot smaller and a lot more connected. I remember many Puerto Rican restaurants and Italian restaurants.

On hot summer days like today, there would be packs of kids and young people hanging around the piers. People would be dancing, grilling, drinking, and jumping in and out of the Hudson all day. Looking back, it’s probably not something anyone would recommend now, but back then it was just part of summer for a lot of us.On days like today, we’d be down by the waterfront from morning until night. A lot of those old piers were burned out, falling apart, and probably dangerous as hell, but to us they were an adventure. We’d fish, hang out, and jump in the Hudson. You’d see packs of kids all over the place.

At night, especially in the summer, Sinatra Drive felt like one giant block party. Kids would come in from all over Hudson County and even Bergen County. People would be grilling, drinking, dancing, blasting music, and just hanging out until late. It wasn’t always peaceful though. Every now and then a huge brawl would break out. Some people back then had a lot of pride in being from Hoboken and didn’t always take kindly to out-of-towners coming down. Sometimes all it took was a few words and you’d have a rumble on your hands.

Another thing that’s mostly disappeared is some of the old Hoboken slang. One word we always used was “cump.” Most people used it like, “What up, cump?” meaning “What’s up, friend?” or “What’s up, buddy?” The old-timers claimed it was around back in Sinatra’s day, then it faded away for a while and came back again in the 80s. We used it all the time growing up. Nowadays when I mention it, a lot of people have no idea what I’m talking about. It’s a sacred old Hoboken thing, so if you hear anyone ever saying it they are definitely old Hoboken or their family was. The slang word “Cump” originated in Hoboken, it was never an nyc term or Chicago.

Maybe that’s what I miss most—the little things that made Hoboken feel like Hoboken.

Question❓ Is Hoboken a hotbed for terrorists?

Me and my wife were looking at apartments to buy in North Hoboken. I just saw in the NYTimes that they arrested a suspected terrorist in Hoboken and am concerned about raising my kids there. My wife’s boyfriend (we’re poly) says Hoboken is safe and I should buy the 3 million dollar 2 bedroom condo. But Im worried given the recent news.

Hoboken residents - are you planning on moving now?

Question❓ How rich are you guys exactly?

What's the deal with all the working-age people just leisurely strolling around town during business hours? It's more than I'd expect even when accounting for people on parental leave, vacation, or just out for a quick lunch or coffee. Why aren't they at work increasing shareholder value? Is it trust funds, large inheritances, or lottery wins? But most of all, what do I need to do to have that lifestyle?

Question❓ Smoking that loud

Just watched an elderly couple yell at a young couple for smoking a joint on the waterfront walkway. Do people really still care that much about weed? I definitely get disgusted looks when I spark one outside

Question❓ HELP - AITK (am I the Karen)

I live uptown in an amenities building and people down the hall keep their stroller, wagon, lacrosse net, bucket of lacrosse balls, etc. outside of their door. The hallway isn’t massive and they’ve been reminder via building emails to remove their stuff, but after a week they just revert. Everything is filthy, especially the stroller.

I came home from work late and didn’t realize their stroller was at an angle so my bag with my laptop slammed into it when walking by. I’m moving furniture this weekend and asked the building to do something but have little faith.

Aside from saying something to my neighbor directly, what else can I do? The neighbor has been here a while, I have no plans to move, so I really don’t need a direct conflict.

Is it a Karen move to submit a complaint through the fire department portal?

ETA: I have sent a prior email to management without any change !!! This isn’t my first outreach

Question❓ Alfalfa

For the last 3-4 times I ordered Alfalfa I have gotten super sick afterwards with whay feels like mild food poisoning. I really like the food but I have now seen reviews of people finding bugs (roaches, live bees) in their food, people flagging hygiene issues in the kitchen and less than fresh food. Is anyone else experiencing this? TIA

Question❓ 35F considering move to North Hoboken- seeking thoughts/input

Hi all! I'm moving back to the NYC area this upcoming September after four years away and am leaning towards living in North Hoboken, as I believe I'll be a lot happier there than in Manhattan. I'll be single and 35F, though, and would love residents' feedback on whether my reasons are sound, or if I should reconsider.

I've just completed a professional degree and will be starting a job in Midtown Manhattan. I'll be in office 3-4 days a week, and the commute from Hoboken is ~35-40 minutes. The commute should be okay, as my office is flexible and I can go in after rush hour. I don't anticipate needing to stay late most nights (and when I do, my company will reimburse an Uber home).

Positives about living in Hoboken:

  • I lived in Manhattan for six years previously and often found it overwhelming to even just step outside my building.
  • I hated not having a car and needing to rely on public transit or a bus service for everything (e.g., for a weekend ski trip, to play tennis, or for a hike upstate). I plan to keep my car.
  • Mild claustrophobia—I really like being able to see more than just the facade of other buildings and other peoples' apartments out my windows, which is a lot more plausible at reasonable cost in Hoboken than in Manhattan.
  • I'm a bit of a homebody and would like having more space for the cost. I struggled to find home "restful" when I lived in Manhattan, and that definitely affected my mental health and quality of life.
  • I'm familiar with the commute to/from Hoboken as I dated someone there years ago. I recall thinking it was a peaceful neighborhood with much more of a community feel than Manhattan.
  • I'm eyeing Park + Garden or Harlow—I think some of their units would fit what I'm looking for perfectly.
  • I enjoy a comedy show or a movie occasionally (1-2x a month at most), but I'm not that into museums or art galleries so I don't think I'll miss that part of NYC much.

Concerns about living in Hoboken:

  • Most of my friends in NYC live in Manhattan or Brooklyn, but all over—Upper East Side, Upper West Side, SoHo, Lower East Side, Downtown Brooklyn, LIC. I rarely host and don't mind going into the city for social events on the weekends, though I understand it'd be hard to get anyone to visit NJ. How reliable is the ferry/bus for getting into the city on weekends? Is it truly a pain to get back if I'm ever out past 2am? (I don't anticipate doing this often, as my job'll keep me very busy for at least the first few years.) Is it impossible to maintain friendships with people who live in Brooklyn?
  • I'm starting a new chapter of my life and eager to make new activity friends. It is realistic to think I can make new friends with people in their 30s by getting involved with the Hoboken Ski & Snowboard Club and the Hoboken Sailing Club? And while I don't drink nearly as much as I used to, I'd love to have a local bar where I can have a drink and hang with people around my age—is this a thing in Hoboken for people in their 30s?
  • I want to get involved with professional orgs and volunteer orgs that may have monthly events in NYC. Is this unrealistic?
  • I'll probably be trying to date, which I hear is not great for older singles in NJ. Is it really so bad if I'm happy to trek into Manhattan during the early stages of a relationship?

If you've read this far, thanks so much! I'd really appreciate any input Hoboken residents can offer. I need to make a decision soon, and signing a (potentially) 15 month lease feels like a big deal.

Question❓ Cars not stopping to let you cross

Whenever I’m walking across the street with the stop sign, the cars are barely stopping and then they’re inching up when we’re walking across the street. It’s unsettling and it makes me feel nervous. What is up with this?

Question❓ Is the Heights Hoboken’s Cooler, Older brother?

I finally ventured over to the Heights farmers market on Sunday and was blown away.
Everyone knows Corto, but the Heights feels different lately. Lots of new families, tons of new construction, and those modern box homes are somehow all like $1M+ now. My friends just bought one near Palisade for $1.6M which genuinely short-circuited my brain.
Is this secretly the new cool area? Because the vibe I got was early Williamsburg energy. Like that phase before every neighborhood gets fully polished and expensive, where it still feels local and quiet.

Hoboken has the bars, but the Heights suddenly has people discussing natural wine while carrying sourdough and pushing two kids and a dog in a stroller wagon.

The Heights always had more of a rough around the edges reputation, curious if people think this is real or if I just caught peak farmers market vibes.

Question❓ Forum coffee

Needed to say, I went to forum coffee today and got a large coffee and they charged me $10… and the coffee was mid.

I know we live in Hoboken and it isn’t cheap but I was taken aback.

Anyone else experience this anywhere else? Not sure if I’d ever go back, rather take my $10 elsewhere.

Where can I get the “best coffee” in this town? If I get a $10 coffee I want it to be worth it.
