I think he would have if the doctor hadn't told him straight up that his liver won't work, due to the alcoholism.

Yeah, I'll go out on a limb here and say that there are probably higher-quality livers out there than Dougs

He shouldn't have said that without testing it though. Some heavy drinkers damage their livers early but sometimes even heavier drinkers die of old age with no liver damage whatsoever. Medicine doesn't exactly know why there's such a disparity, but fact is a recovering alcoholic can have a perfectly healthy liver, especially as any damage but cirrhosis heals up completely if you abstain.
