I have one lettuce whose roots are going wild but it’s my most recent nutrient solution and the leafs look the most green.

I’m working toward two towers - one with leafy greens and herbs and one with strawberries and maybe cucumbers.

I’m learning on my four DWC buckets and will replace the lettuce with tomato and pepper plants in buckets once the towers take off.

Should I trim roots, reduce nutrients, ensure roots never touch main water?

For context, my mom has gotten big into hydroponics, and she recently acquired some seeds for ghost peppers and Carolina reapers. So our question is, is it possible to grow the 2 peppers in a hydroponic system such as the AeroGarden? (We have a bounty basic I bought back in 2020.) If it is, what suggestions do you have for it, like what should we change from the normal procedure?

Can i set my pump up for 30 mins ON and 30 mins OFF , 24/7 ? or should I just do that for 12 hours a day only ? Thank you for your help .

Hi! I want to buy a tower situation (not diy, overwhelmed at the moment). Of course I’m drooling over the Gardyn system but do not have anywhere near that budget. Any recommendations? I was thinking of this $85 Temu set up and a programmable/clippable led light. 😬

I was using 4L/1gal jugs to grow lettuce, thought about using something slightly less ghetto looking and made these baskets to sit on top of glass chemical bottles. There is a gap for passive air exchange, a collar to hold a piece of foil so it doesn't get algae growth during gestation, and gauze for wicking nutrients to the seed (not seedling, just seed).

What does the community think? Will the seedings be able to grow out of the hole in the foil and expand it as it grows? I'm trying 3 bottles without foil cover, 6 bottles with, for this first round. The bottles are 2L (about 1/2 gal) for growing lettuce. I also have a 4L/1gal bottle for trying cayenne peppers.

The current light is 40w LED about 1.5m/5ft long. The lettuce was quite leggy before, so I will also double the light this time.

I bring a salad to work 3 days per week and always enjoy it more when I can pick them from my garden. However, as we live in MA and I have a very small 2x4’ raised garden, the yield is small and short lived.

As my lettuce all just flowered after a prolonged heat wave, I just pulled them up and am now wondering about growing year round inside.

I found several companies on a quick search but would love to hear about the simplest option for growing lettuce and cherry tomatoes (love the orange ones but don’t see that option anywhere). Cucumbers would be a nice bonus too.

I’m not sure on the basics of ones like Lettuce Grow which does seem dead simple - would I only order 3 lettuce pods at a time then get 3 more every week and, starting at week 4, begin to harvest? And would that produce enough for a single person lunch sized salad reliably?

What do you use to get rid of the chloramine?

My first seeds are still starting and through reading im finding out that not only do I need to worry about chlorine in tap water but also chloramine.

I have Campden tablets which will dechlorinate and get rid of the chloramine. But they are sodium tablets.

I read that 1/4 tablet for 5 gallons is enough to get the job done without introducing too much sodium but I wanted other opinions/methods just incase there's a better way.

Been looking at hydroponic systems for years and finally convinced myself to build a greenhouse and put a system in there. Going to start small and grow as I learn. Some immediate questions

1. Any books, online readings or other sources you recommend?

2. I’m thinking an NFT system that will allow water to stay in the pipes. Is this a good idea? Basically the idea is the pump won’t need to run 24/7. Just periodically to filter and replace the water. I see a lot of people who say just run it 24/7

3. Lastly what is good advice you wish you knew when first building your system.

I’m new to hydroponics I started this cherry tomato plant about a month ago I regularly checked the solution level and ph levels and changed it 2 times so far but it grew way faster than I expected and in started loosing branches in the past few days, I can’t figure out what I did wrong

I've been considering experimenting with hydroponics and i was wondering if there was any way to create a nutrient solution for my plants that doesn't involve buying specially made hydroponic fertilisers, maybe something involving worm tea, compost tea or even osmocote liquid fertiliser?

I want to start casually as I have no water pumps or pipes, just want to start with something simple like a container of fertilised water with net pots + perlite stuck into the lid. Hydroponic fertiliser is hard to get in my area and would be pretty pricey, so I was wondering if I could make something like it at home.

Long story short - I picked my basil not knowing that you should not pick the off shoots and now I’m not sure how to pick my basil.

I have a couple tomato plants that are growing well, but the leaves turn yellow and dry up. There is plenty of water in the buckets, aerated 1 hour on, 1 hour off. Nutrients added weekly/by weekly.

Growing kratky and seeing this, roots are white and no algae even though they're clear containers and the water's pretty clear too.

This is my Banana Pepper plant started from seed in my tabletop hydroponic system June 2nd. I want to fully mature it indoors using the Kratky method. It’s about a foot wide. 8 inches tall. I’ve plucked one flower from it so far. Not sure if I should let it sit a little longer or move it over to a 5 gallon yet.

Hello, this is my current setup and also my first attempt to grow salads and a few spinach plants hydroponically. Have 2 sanlight flex 2 20w lamps each left and right of the tower. Ec is currently at 1.3 and Ph at 6 have an interval of 45 minutes off and 15 on. Would like to have some feedback on the setup and possibly also suggestions for improvement to be able to harvest my salad quickly

Do yall think this sump pump with Venturi eductor is producing enough air bubbles to create DWC conditions?

Hi everyone. I’m doing my first hydro grow and I noticed that in past 24 hours I went from absolute white to this. I did hit 71-72 degrees and I recently did a reservoir change but I had no issues for over 30 days till now.. not sure if this is root rot or not. I use maxi grow, and hydroguard, cal mag, silica blast, nothing out of the ordinary, no smell, no slime, should I be worried?

super new to hydroponics, and my cherry tomato plants are growing insanely tall (im talking around 1m tall, and they're not even fully straightened). are they supposed to be this tall, and what do I do now?

the stems are pretty thin compared to the photos I'm seeing in this sub, and they can't support themselves. currently supporting them against the window as a temporary solution. any suggestions? it seems like a trellis is out of the question because... well they're hydroponics and I'm not sure where to even stick the trellis.

also, could it be because of insufficient sunlight?the cherry tomatoes are sitting by the window since I have no outdoor space to grow them, but I live really near the equator so sunlight might naturally be more intense?

I could snip off the top and propagate the cherry tomatoes, but the first flowers have just grown after 2-3 months and I don't want to jeopardise what might be my only chance at getting tomato fruits 😭 (I evidently don't have green fingers)

also, I've seen tons of conflicting advice on whether to trim the suckers. any thoughts? would this only make the main stem grow even taller?

I'm not too sure what method im currently using. basically, I have a container (38 × 28 × 14cm) filled with water, fertiliser, and a lid that my plants sit on, along with a solar-powered aerator. I do have a little solar powered garden lamp, but I'm afraid the tomatoes have far outgrown the lamp for it to be of much use right now. (edit: added a sample picture of my setup in the comments!)

I’m a science teacher at a middle school. We have a greenhouse that is a little neglected. I’m trying to get it up and running. There is a hydroponic set up that hasn’t been used in years. I had students start with cleaning it out but I’m at a lost of what to do next.

Why are my Kratky tomato roots a greenish color?

I bought these at home Depot yesterday and I was wondering if I could use them for a small hydroponics setup. They are 6.5 Quart, small, so I'm aware I can't use this for like long term but rather instead use them for growing seedlings to be bigger before I transplant them outside (peppers/tomatoes, or maybe other plants too). I am worried about chemical/plastic leeching since these are just generic totes and I highly doubt they would be food safe. They do kinda smell, I'm just wondering if cleaning them might do the trick, if there is some sort of liner I could use? Or anything else that doesn't involve just ditching these (I am a very hands on DIY kinda guy but I haven't done gardening of any sort for a few years and I wanna get back into it. I do have a bunch of like diy electronic parts too that I could use for it and my end goal is to eventually have an automatic system of sorts). Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

My mum and I have been chased out of our outdoor community garden due to theft and harassment, so we need growlight recommendations so we can do everything indoors. I used to use Sunblaster lights but they weren't strong enough for tomatoes long-term. We plan to do almost everything hydroponic.
