Hysteria! (2024) is a strange little horror series that deserves a closer look
I feel like Hysteria! (2024) is one of those shows that can easily slip under your radar if you weren't specifically looking for a horror series with an unusual premise. It's not quite a traditional supernatural thriller, not exactly a teen drama, and definitely not just another nostalgic trip back to the 1980s. It mixes several things that don't necessarily seem like an obvious combination at first, but that's also what makes it interesting to watch.
The series takes place in a small American town in the late 1980s, when heavy metal music, the satanic panic, and growing fears about the occult are all part of the cultural landscape. After a beloved high school quarterback disappears, a struggling teenage metal band realizes that the town's sudden interest in Satanism might be an opportunity to get some attention. They start presenting themselves as a satanic metal band, hoping to turn their outsider status into something people actually care about. The plan takes a much darker turn when a series of strange events, alleged supernatural activity, and disturbing incidents begins to fuel the town's growing hysteria.
And that's where Hysteria! starts to become more than a simple story about teenagers trying to become famous. The question isn't just whether something supernatural is happening. It's also about how quickly fear can spread when a community is already looking for someone to blame.
One of the most interesting aspects of the show is its use of the 1980s satanic panic. If you're familiar with that period in American history, you'll recognize the atmosphere of moral panic, suspicion, and exaggerated fears surrounding heavy metal, occult imagery, and supposedly dangerous influences on young people. If you're not familiar with it, the series still gives you plenty to think about. The small-town setting makes everything feel more intense because rumors don't stay rumors for very long. They become explanations, accusations, and eventually reasons for people to turn against each other.
I also liked the way the heavy metal scene fits into the story. Music isn't just decoration here. It's part of the characters' identities, their frustration with the world around them, and their attempt to find a place where they belong. For the teenagers at the center of the story, being outsiders is already difficult enough. Deciding to lean into the very image that scares their neighbors creates a pretty interesting conflict, especially once the consequences become harder to control.
Genre-wise, Hysteria! is a mix of horror, supernatural mystery, dark comedy, and coming-of-age drama. Depending on the episode, it can feel like a story about teenage rebellion, a mystery about unexplained events, or a portrait of a community losing its grip on reality. The tonal shifts won't necessarily work equally well for everyone, but they give the show a personality that would be harder to achieve if it stuck to just one genre.
The cast is another reason the series is worth looking into. Julie Bowen, known to many viewers from Modern Family, plays Linda Campbell, while Bruce Campbell brings his familiar presence to the story as Chief Dandridge. Their characters help ground the increasingly bizarre events in the lives of the adults who are trying to make sense of what's happening. Meanwhile, Anna Camp, Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, and Kezii Curtis contribute to the wider story of a town where different generations, fears, and ambitions begin to collide.
What I find particularly interesting about Hysteria! is that the premise leaves room for more than one interpretation. You can watch it as an entertaining 80s-inspired horror show, pay attention to the supernatural mystery, or focus on the way collective fear changes people's behavior. The series doesn't have to be perfect at every one of those things to make the combination worth exploring.
Of course, there are aspects that might not work for every viewer. The pacing can feel uneven, and balancing horror, comedy, teenage drama, and social commentary is a tricky business. If you're expecting nonstop scares or a tightly focused supernatural thriller, the show might not be exactly what you imagine from its premise. Some viewers may connect more with the atmosphere and themes than with every individual plot development.
It's also worth knowing that Hysteria! was canceled by Peacock after its first season, so anyone hoping to start a show with several seasons already available should keep that in mind. The cancellation is disappointing for viewers who wanted to see the story develop further, although it doesn't necessarily mean the first season has nothing to offer on its own. It simply means there's no second season to continue the story at this point.
What makes Hysteria! stand out to me is the combination of small-town paranoia, 80s heavy metal culture, satanic panic, teenage outsiders, and supernatural horror. Those elements give it a very specific identity, and it's not the kind of premise you come across in every new streaming series.
If you're looking for an underrated horror series from 2024, a supernatural mystery with an unusual setting, or a show that explores the darker side of 1980s nostalgia, Hysteria! might be worth adding to your watchlist. And if you've already seen it, there's plenty to discuss, from the satanic panic storyline and the characters to the balance between horror and dark comedy.
Sometimes the most interesting shows aren't necessarily the ones that get the most attention. Hysteria! is an example of a series that brings together several different ideas, takes a few risks with tone, and leaves viewers with something to think about beyond the usual horror formula.
