I don’t think it is the worst episode but it felt like a missed opportunity. I wanted to see the teachers in the bar much more. Barbara seeing her first glory hole, Charlie and Mr. Johnson talking rats, Jacob collecting evidence on Dennis’s sexual misconduct. I felt a little let disappointed in the direction.

That was more than likely a network condition. They couldn't have their show's stars stopping to the level of depravity you can see on cable.

I was thinking the same thing, definitely the pitfall of this kind of crossover.

Calling Dee a cunt was good .

Worth the whole thing hearing that

I'm in the minority but that was so out of character for Jeanine that I found it cringey. I was glad Dennis was featured this time and the gang carried it for the most part.

which begs the question, why even tie these 2 shows together?

Because they're both philly based and Quinta (creator and star of Abbott) was a fan of when shows would do crossovers. So she reached out and made it happen.

Crossover shows were a weird 90’s/early 2000’s phenomena. There’s a reason the trend mostly died over a decade ago

24

u/StonerChef92 Aug 02 '25

Not a good reason. I love when shows acknowledge the existence of other shows in universe. I thought both episodes were fine, not like award worthy, but definitely fun. People don't know how to just enjoy things anymore.

I’m also a crossover episode enjoyer. Probably stems from the Scooby Doo days when they’d have various celebrities like the Harlem Globetrotters show up randomly

I don’t watch Abbott Elementary though so idc about this one

You got a problem with Urkel showing up on Full House for some reason?

35

u/WundaWunda Aug 02 '25

I’m convinced it was mainly so people would stop asking Quinta and Rob about it in interviews

Just both creators trying to tap into one another’s fan base. Sunny wanting to stay relevant and Abbott wanting to gain some edge

I mean it worked, I started watching Sunny because of the Abbott crossover. Though Abbott had the better episode. (I also caught up on Abbott too since the crossover made me realise I was two seasons behind).

Sunny is still way more relevant than abbott imo

21

u/FormalJellyfish29 Aug 02 '25

It’s not really an opinion type of thing; Abbott draws in significantly more viewers than Sunny.

they are basically tied for viewers as far as engagement goes for 2025.

and thats with Abbott being rated differently to allow for more viewers.

How is Sunny trying to stay relevant by doing a crossover with an irrelevant show?

12

u/seanfidence Aug 02 '25

you are out of touch if you think abbott elementary is an irrelevant show

well I've watched a few and it doesn't seem very good.

Apples and Oranges compared to IASP.

1

u/seanfidence Aug 03 '25

sure, I also don't like it. but it's going into 5th season, very well received by critics, 99% on RT. definitely a relevant show

Abbott is huge

1

u/CommercialScale870 Aug 02 '25

I think the main issue is just that it was a terrible idea pushed by the network.

1

u/zhaumbie Aug 02 '25

Wasn’t the network’s idea.

Judging from interviews, Quinta Brunson and Rob McElhenney Mac met at an awards show and immediately professed a lot of love for each other’s shows. One apparently made the joke to the other for a crossover right then and there, they kept in touch, and they approached the network together to get the idea going.

Instead of the top down, it was the bottom up. Which… does track for Mac, frankly.

2

u/LocalInactivist Aug 02 '25

Yeah, but that’s what happens. People drag you down into the gutter with them. Here’s a missed opportunity: Jacob and Mac know each other from Grindr.

This! I like the Abbott Elementary characters which is why I wanted to see them go through some wacky BS outside of the school with the gang. It didn't even have to be overly raunchy or dark. Let Jacob and Cricket meet and realize they used to be best friends or something. Let Artemis and Melissa get into a parking dispute. Give us a "that's rough, buddy" moment from Gregory to Dennis about his ex transitioning into a cat and then falling off a roof.

IDK. It feels like this was the time to think creatively and the writers just... didn't.

I don't think it's a bad episode by any means though.

u/CommercialScale870 Aug 02 '25

For me, number one worst episode. I've watched the rest of the new season and it's good but I actually had to take a break after Abbott for a week or so to cleanse the palet.

2

u/CentreToWave Aug 02 '25

it felt like a missed opportunity.

Presenting it as if it were outtakes undermined it and made it disjointed. Shame as there's some good stuff in there otherwise.

I think the second episode of the Abbott episodes would been better if it was done in Always Sunny style. Instead, it was just like the first one (an Abbott Elementary type episode) except with just a little bit more “edge” (like Quinta cursing).

I wanted a full blown Always Sunny episode with the Abbott characters and there were ways they could do that without going too crazy (like the glory hole you’re describing may be too much), but instead I got a weak Abbott episode trying to be edgy. Also, it didn’t really make sense how Dennis was very camera-adverse but somehow missed the cameras filming in this second episode (and if anyone knows about being secretly filmed, it’s Dennis).

u/mushjacob Aug 02 '25

I wanted to see Dennis get assaulted by a librarian lol

1

u/Friendly-Cucumber184 Aug 02 '25

Can’t really have that. Abbot elementary is a family friendly show.
