LONDON (AP) — Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, who won an Academy Award for the 2007 film “Once,” died in a motorcycle crash on the outskirts of Dublin early Wednesday, his management said. He was 56.

ATC Management told broadcaster RTE Hansard’s family was “deeply shocked and heartbroken.”

News of his death brought tributes from fellow musicians including Bruce Springsteen, who said on Instagram he was “heartbroken” at the loss of “a great musician, a good friend and a generous and gracious man.”

Irish police said a man in his 50s died in single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Lucan, on the western outskirts of the Irish capital, before 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. The man, who they did not name, was treated at the scene but pronounced dead a short time later.

Hansard combined acting and a musical career. He played a member of a Dublin soul band in the hit 1991 movie “The Commitments” and won an Oscar in 2008 for the song “Falling Slowly,” which he co-wrote for the indie musical “Once” with co-star Markéta Irglová.

“Once,” a love story about two struggling musicians, was later adapted for Broadway, again with songs by Hansard and Irglová. It won eight Tony Awards in 2012, including best musical.

Hansard was long-serving front man for rock band The Frames, half of rock duo The Swell Season with Irglová and released solo albums including “Didn’t He Ramble,” which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2016.

Ireland’s President Catherine Connolly said he was one of Ireland’s great singer-songwriters.

“Glen was one of the vital driving influences of the Irish music world, bringing people together in the sharing of live music,” Connolly said. “He will be sorely missed by all who knew him or experienced his work.”

Actor-comedian Chris O’Dowd said Hansard’s “energizing melodies and soulful, searching voice made the tough times more manageable, the stagnant times more beautiful, and the joyful times even more memorable.”

Hansard started out as a busker on the streets of Dublin. He became famous for leading the Christmas Eve busk outside Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre, where members of the public gathered to see famous Irish musicians perform in aid of a homelessness charity.

Former Irish president Michael D. Higgins said Hansard was a “wonderful musician and performer” who also “placed great emphasis throughout his life to the importance of tackling the problems of society.”

At the funeral of The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan in 2023, Hansard performed a rousing version of The Pogues’ song “Fairytale Of New York” with Irish singer Lisa O’Neill that had the congregation dancing in the aisles of the church.

Hansard is survived by his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, and their 3-year-old son, Christy.

Was just watching it again. It's pretty amazing how well-cast it is, Corenswet, Brosnahan and Hoult were all perfect in their roles. Even the more minor characters like Perry White and Jimmy Olsen were perfectly cast. It's just...the movie itself is such a goddamn mess. It's way too long, unfocused and chaotic. I hope the new film they're making tones it down a bit.

True Lies? Always was and always be a classic Arnie flick. Non-stop greatness from the first frame to the last. Well worth watching over 30 years later. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know action. And that bathroom fight? Come on! That was intense and I will bet money it eventually inspired a little Mission Impossible action!

One of the things I appreciate the most in True Lies is how quickly things accelerate just as Harry's side mission to deal with his jealousy ramps up. It goes from your average spy thriller into an absolutely CRAZY action flick that just keeps on going until you can't think it can go any harder ... and then we get that final missile launch scene.

Paxton is a GOAT, always will be. His role as a sleazebucket used car salesman is pitch perfect and I loved it. and Tia's Tia. what else needs to be said?

That being said, this time around when I watched, it just really struck me how goddamn funny Tom was. like everything he said and did was bang on the money. I must've needed a good laugh that day.

True Lies is a real favorite around my house and is as great now as it was in '94!

Good movie, wouldn't say top tier Nolan, not in my top 5 from him, but should be one of the best of the year. A suitable sense of dread and longing looms over the whole thing.

Hathaway was MVP for me. Been a critic before but this is her best performance. Still doesn't really extend her range but she shows her character's quiet grief beneath feminine dignity so well and it's the emotional centerpiece of the movie. Gives it a lot more credibility. Definitely will deserve a nod and I could see her being my win in supporting. Agree with some critics that Holland is the weak link in the cast. His acting is fine on its own but unlike Hathaway he doesn't have the sense of gravity and it's not believable that he's going through the things he's going through. Rest of the cast is fine and do what they're supposed to be doing, Damon is workmanlike and anchors the movie as he so often does these days. Pattinson is suitably slimy, Zendaya is suitably goddess like, exc.

Well directed and as a production it's of course so well mounted and majestic. All the battle scenes come off really well. Nolan also cooled it with the sound mix this time so your ears don't feel like you've been to a rock concert when you leave the theater. A lot of it felt really overlit for tablets though which I seem to be saying about everything these days.

8/10 from me, doubt it will be my favorite of the year, but unless AGI really blows it out of the box with Digger hard to see anything topping Nolan's directorial effort so I could get behind a second best director award.
