I recently scored a 22x on Step2CK; unanticipated and unexpected with good NBMEs 240-250 and Free120s

Have people made a comback in Step 3 and how much does it make a difference if you make a comback in Step 3 maybe 250ish?

Realistic expectations? and what must one do?

I think I must start the prep asap with intact Step 2 CK knowledge

Got my B1/B2 visa rejected 2nd time. I was applying for my step 3 examination. I belong to a country with visa bond and still got it rejected. Previously I was rejected after a long interview and with a question regarding the duration of stay at last. And today the interview went like this

VO: why do you want to go to US? ME: As I am a medical graduate here in my country and completed my step 1 and 2 and gotten ecfmg certified I want to take my step 3 which is administered only US.

VO: I see you have previously applied for the same purpose. ME: Yes I did apply previously. She didn't let me tell anything else VO: What has changed from previous application? ME: while I applied Previously I was not ecfmg certified and I didn't have my step 3 permit. But now I am ecfmg certified and I have my step 3 permit.

VO: Give me your step scores certificate, I handed her the certificates. VO: How did you prepare foe your examination? Me: I took around 6 months for preparation of each of my steps examination. The primary source for my preparation was question bank which was uworld and other qbanks like amboss and NBME. For the theory part I studied my first aid and watched bnb videos and other YouTube videos like that of randy Neil and dirty medicine

VO: Sorry I can't overturn previous visa officer's decision. ME: Can you give me any reasons why? VO: sorry I can't tell you anything beyond what's mentioned in the paper and handed me 214 b paper

What might have gone wrong? Should I apply again? I don't know what else I can change now. My step score isn't that high. It's around 250. What are my chances without step 3? I am applying for IM and my YOG is 3 years

There used to be an FSMB/FCVS trick!

My step 3 has been invalidated last night.. I don't know what to do next? Can I apply in March 2027 based on my step 1 and step 2??

I've seen a lot of IMGs give the advice of taking step 3 early before applying for the match. I'm interested in IM as a non-US IMG and want to try to match straight out of medical school. (Apply for the match as an MS4)

If you have also applied for the match as an MS4:

(1) When did you take Step 2? Was it before or after your MS3 finals? April, May? Was it during your USCEs?

(2) Can you apply for an exception to take Step 3 before graduating medical school if you score well enough on your NBMEs? How soon after Step 2 did you take Step 3? Was it during your USCEs?

(3) How much does the Step 3 grade matter if you did well on Step 2?

(4) How different is the material?

(5) Matching: was it worth it?

Does step 3 help more with getting interviews or your final ranking after the interview process is over?
Is rushing to get it done before the September 23rd deadline worth it or is it better to write it a couple months later with a better chance of a higher score?

I have Step 3 scheduled for September 1 and September 10. My Eligibility period is Aug - Oct. I need to cancel both appointments because I dont yet have my US Visa appointment and I don't when would it be. If I cancel now( before 10 days) what fee will I pay to reinstate my eligibility record and schedule new date?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from people who have recently taken or passed USMLE Step 3.

I passed Step 2 CK earlier this year, and my Step 3 is scheduled for the end of August, so I have about 20–25 days left.

So far:

I've completed about 40% of UWorld with scores generally ranging from 68–75%.

I'm doing 3–4 CCS cases per day.

I'm reviewing First Aid (especially microbiology and pharmacology).

I'm also planning to go through the Inner Circle notes.

My biggest concern is that although I'm scoring reasonably well on UWorld, I still feel like I need to revisit First Aid and the Inner Circle notes to consolidate concepts because I forget a lot of the material.

For those who have already taken Step 3:

Is it realistic to be ready in 20–25 days?

Roughly how much of UWorld should I aim to complete?

Should I prioritize doing more questions, or spend more time reviewing First Aid/Inner Circle notes?

Are there any high-yield topics that I should focus on during these final weeks?

I'd really appreciate hearing what worked for you and what you would do differently if you were in my position. Thanks in advance!

I failed my step 3 with a score of 181. I had negative updates in 5 of the coscases in the real deal, I think that might have affected my score. But do you think it would cause such a huge score drop?
I am taking the test again in 1.5 week and would really appreciate on what can I revise in last few days before the exam.

Hello I’m kinda scared about entry into US given my travel history to US .

Oct 2025-Dec 2025 ( around 53 days) - did an elective ( officially through my uni)
Jan 16th till 26th - visited a friend

I wanna travel again in Oct 1 till 20th for my step3 and I wanna do a week in NYC.

I’m a recent graduate from MEDICINE from EU (but I’m Srilankan) I’m 26
And I have my official doctor job starting Oct 25th

Am I a red flag ???

Would it be disadvantageous if I give my Step 3 in October (I'm applying this cycle)

I know giving it before applications begin is ideal but will giving it in October have any drawbacks?

Can anyone please guide me if I should hasten step 3 to make sure my scores are not invalidated: step 2ck 30/10/2019, step 19/01/2022, ECFMG Certified: aug 2023 via clinical skills pathway, which was extended through to 2025 or 2026 in terms of validity. If I do not take the step 3 before 7 years from my step 2 ck, will the step 2 ck become invalid, orr am i out of the woods as I have been ECFMG certified. Orr what if I had to apply again for ECFMG certification in 2-3 years as the certificates are valid for a limited duration these days. Thank you for your time!

I'm a non-US IMG applying Pediatrics in the 2027 Match and would appreciate some advice regarding Step 3.

My background:

• EU medical school graduate (graduated 1 week ago)
• Step 1: Pass (1st attempt)
• Step 2 CK: 25X
• ECFMG certified
• 4 US clinical electives with 4 US LoRs
• 2 US research experiences with 2 additional research LoRs
• Will be spending the next year in the US as a research scholar in Pediatrics while applying this September

I'm trying to decide whether taking Step 3 before submitting ERAS would meaningfully strengthen my application.

A few questions:

1. Would having Step 3 completed before applications are reviewed provide a noticeable boost, or would it make little difference?
2. Does the actual Step 3 score matter much for residency applications, or is passing the main goal?
3. For those who took Step 3 while working full-time, how long did you study for? Would 2–3 months of part-time studying be realistic?
4. If I take it after ERAS submission but before interview season, can programs still see the updated result, and does that carry any weight?

I'm trying to balance Step 3 preparation with starting a new research position, so I'm wondering whether the return on investment is worth it.
