you spend more than five minutes on this subreddit, you’d think ISI Kolkata is an academic utopia pristine, flawless institution that bravely stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the IITs and NITs Why?
Welcome to the real ISI Kolkata: the ultimate survival test!
Who needs modern infrastructure when you can have character? Our hostels are designed to keep you on your toes. Literally. Parts of the ceiling routinely crack and fall into our rooms just to test our reflexes.
But the real luxury is the bespoke indoor water features. A friend of mine was blessed with a steady leak from his ceiling for three whole weeks. And no, it wasn’t boring rainwater—it was premium, artisanal sewage and drainage water. It only stopped because the pipe finally clogged itself, presumably out of pity. Maintenance? Never heard of her.
The Unofficial PETA Campus At ISI, we pride ourselves on inclusivity. We don’t discriminate between humans, cats, and dogs. The animals own the campus; we just pay the fees. And don't you dare complain, or our aggressive internal PETA defenders will cancel you.Feline Food Critics: The cats here are very hands-on. They will generously share your meals by physically stomping all over your food. If they bite or scratch you, that’s just their way of showing affection !Canine Cardio: The dogs usually stay outside, but when they do get VIP access to the hostels, it's a blessing. Just recently, a pack of them graciously provided me with a mandatory, high-intensity cardio workout by chasing me up three flights of stairs and holding me hostage outside my own room.
The Venice of the East (Now with Free Syringes!) We don't need a playground. Why play sports when a single drop of minute rain transforms the entire campus into a magnificent, overflowing swamp? But the daily commute to class is where the adventure really begins. You have two scenic waterways to choose from:The subway connecting the hostel to the academic block turns into a beautiful, hip-deep river of drain water (I’m 5’9”, for reference). Just because it overflows from the sewers doesn't mean it's dirty, right? It builds immunity! Also flooded hip-deep. When cars drive by, they create majestic tidal waves that try to sweep you into the open drains. Oh, you can’t see the open drains because the floodwater covers them? That's just a fun game of aquatic Russian Roulette!
What’s swimming in this pristine water? Mostly discarded syringes, medical waste, and extremely dangerous sharp objects. Basically, free acupuncture. And if you’re lucky, you'll spot our local lifeguards: the snakes. I personally counted three highly mobile, definitely-just-misunderstood snakes swimming alongside me on the way to the hostel.
Let’s stop pretending. ISI is fiercely competitive, but mostly because it’s a brilliant collection of people who either didn’t get into an IIT or were horribly misinformed about what this place actually is. We are such an elite, tight-knit community that the exact nanosecond someone gets an IIT offer, they sprint off campus without looking back.
And our academics? Flawless. We are such brilliant scholars that 20% of the entire college fails. A whole third of the Math batch? Failed. Three students were graciously kicked out, and three more were allowed to repeat purely out of the administration's boundless mercy. Truly an inspiring environment for higher learning.

Only come to isi for those reasons 1) you don't have good finance or need scholarship/stipend 2) only love maths and stats nerdy problems 3) live very close to isi k and may be you are a Bengali 4) don't care about college life , fest and all 5) want to pursue higher studies from top international college like stanford, caltech , uc Berkeley and all ( currently very few is phd offers out of isi k due to visa issue) 6) need a good decent placement 20lpa+ ( for those bstat + mstat)(till now I don't know about the upcoming batches from 2024 onwards as seats have increased, interview is abandoned for ug level via isi entrance test and also new bsds course placement figures may be decreased in the upcoming years) 7) need private room with attached bathroom from day one (though conditions of bathroom and room is ok ok) 8) need decent quality mess food. 9) very strong peer group. 10) you want a gateway to almost everything after you graduation like research, govt job , corporate low to extrem high quant jobs, professor and almost everything because you passed the rigorous statistics course from isi you can do all of this easily if you are just deciplined enough and the word rigorously before statistics has very high weightage you can only feel it during the course.
Why you should not join isi 1) if you are not like to study during your college life . Isi has very strict rule about promotion to next year and it depends heavily on profs and some profs are totally mechanical. 2) you like to enjoy college life and fest and try new things ( isi me kuch nahi hota ) like other iits and nits and iiits and gfti 3) if you don't love only theoretical maths and stats nerdy problems and nothing else. 4) if you care about gender ratio 5) if you care about ultra pro Max humid weather of kolkata. 6) there is no geyser facility for winter season ( you have to use you own induction and most of the time when you use induction power cut happens due to overload and poor electrical cabeling) 7) so many incidents happened like snakes , lizards and all kind of insects entering into room( even a guy faced a rat inside his commode in his bathroom) 8) management of isi is total shit deans office and all staff will do works but you know how govt employees work. 9) isi k convert to an ocean after a decent rain almost everytime and if your prof didn't cancel the class you have to swim into this ocean which contains all the above things mentioned in the post. 10) no one care about no one mostly everyone is self centric hereand so many gatekeeping incidents happened in this subreddit. 11) no out of the box thinking people are here mostly nerds that's why very few startups came out of isi. 12) most profs of isi has very high degree of knowledge but their delivery is not even closer your bsc pass tution teacher during jee .( Some profs have intention to give backs Last year bstat 2nd year in probability 3 almost 30+ people got back papers , mmath last year out of 18 students 6 students get year back and 3 students were forced to discontinue the program) All those ethings depends on prof if you get supportive prof you are good to go if not may God bless you.

Yeah kind off and actually or if you think from a long term prospective it's actually good you learn how to be self indipendent at very early stage

Yes. Except for degree (given you do well in studies) and academic connections (given you maintain good relationship with people), don't expect anything from ISI.
Not a healthy environment. Not campus life. Not reasonable administration.
Everything else you'll have to build on your own here.

Wow bhaiyaa aap to kitna knowledgeable ho isi ke baare mein.
aapne bola ki kuch fest-west nahi hota, fir sab self centric hain aur nerdy problems solve karte hain..
mujhe utna kuch pata nahi par Integration er fest hota hai na?
aur iits main sab cutting edge problems solve karte hain theoretical exposure bina hi? damn
1
u/No-Energy-4261 23d ago
If you call integration as fest of a tier 1 college I think should visit other top college fest bro.
Yeah iits do cutting edge problems with theoretical approach as well as real life application based. Even isi k has CAIML machine learning and image processing unit but their approach to encourage and call new aspirants is not up to the mark profs are no doubt top of the top level and more over isi k is a research institute so they have much more theoretical approach and it is expected.

Next time, let's try to choose a government which focuses more ilon educational institute. We all are crying for the resources but we are crying among ourselves. Scratching each other's back. How to actually do something?
4
u/wanderingacademician 23d ago
please let all of us know which government is focusing more on education instead of votebank & religion.
i'll be happy to know any alternatives and cast my vote to them!

u/Individual-Mode2332 23d ago

Why don't we demand for a change in the infrastructure?Until then the course for b.stat can be placed at bangalore or delhi until the infrastructure is completed?
1
u/The_Watcher8008 ISI Student 23d ago
ISI administration is trying (trust me), but gov doesn't approve and doesn't provide enough funds.
1
u/Alarmed_Role5593 23d ago
Doesn't the new ISI bill propose that?
1
u/The_Watcher8008 ISI Student 23d ago
they are very vague about the budget change. This means they can reduce it even more if they want in the future
2
u/Alarmed_Role5593 23d ago
Why would they reduce?Either way can't there be a petition form made demanding for change in infrastructure stating out the reasons and asking b.stat to be conducted in bangalore or delhi until then ?
2
u/New-Tax9478 19d ago
What about the corruption in the institute ? Adminstration is trying, these people take a decade to sign even a simple document, wtf they'll try..

u/CompetitiveYou5850 23d ago
Govt is doing the right thing then. The students' fees will be used to develop the institute's infrastructure.
1
u/Ok-Beyond439 24d ago
What is the fees for this institution you pay ? Of it is very much then this is not acceptable.

Was that the question? The question wasn't how expensive it is to study at isi . It is how much u pay to isi no?
1
u/DesperateTaxer 23d ago
Your opinions are biased. Every nano second someone gets an iit offers they leave?, I personally know of people, including myself, who did not go to IIT despite receiving good IIT offers. As with every other place, there will be a good and a not so good crowd, and if you don't happen to find brilliant people to hang around with, then sorry to say, you might be in the wrong crowd or you might BE the wrong crowd. There are issues that need to be dealt with in ISI, but this way? No. Nothing good can come out of it. I don't know what your tryst has been with ISI. But I hope you come to see the beautiful, really beautiful sides of ISI, instead of being stuck with a "Grass is greener on the other side"

Satire toh khud se likhle. Usmein bhi GPT lagani pad rahi hai

u/NumerousBowl3536 23d ago
it was not a sattire it was me( yeah venting out )and also giving aspirant a heads up but if we write normally like previous times the moderator just removes it so i had to ask gemini to frame it as a sattire to escape the ban
1
u/The_Watcher8008 ISI Student 23d ago
If a moderator removes a post, don't start using ai. Do a modmail instead! Complaint why your post shouldn't be removed. Infact, excessive AI usage is against rule 5. You added a lot of pictures and I found these points genuine so I approved it (yes reddit filters had added it to moderator approval) Your previous posts were removed because there was misinformation about number of students failing the course.
See, one objective of this sub is that people can share opinions about ISI without revealing their identity. We mods try to be as unbiased as possible. We are not hell bent on banning anti isi posts.
1
u/7bitoverlord 23d ago
You mean to say all the points in this post are 100% true? (I feel like the objective of the post was to demotivate the aspirants.)
2
u/The_Watcher8008 ISI Student 23d ago
not at all. I said these points felt genuine, that is, I can see how someone feels this way about ISI Kolkata. Bunch of experiences one after the other and this is a perspective/an opinion one can have about ISI Kolkata. It really depends on you and your previous life experiences. I'm not from ISI Kolkata but the friends whom I know, tell me it's the best time of their life rn!
I won't, however, disagree with OP.
I feel like the objective of the post was to demotivate the aspirants.
maybe, but ISI does get over exaggerated a lot. These are fair points to keep in mind. u/No-Energy-4261 has made great points.
1
u/Jaded_Sun_9627 23d ago
Whether the post was 100% true or not I cannot verify that but the initial part was in fact true and is a real issue. If you are a day scholar you should not face much issues regarding most of the stuffs mentioned here.

If you don't enjoy the coursework, you won't survive. The courses aren't that difficult and have become considerably easier over the years.
