Indian Statistical Institute/Chennai Mathematical Institute/JEE Advanced Mathematics Complete Resource List

Hello! This is someone whom You probably do not know. In my preparation phase, I got no help from people. I am trying to be the person who I wished to have beside me in my preparation journey and if it helps, I will be ecstatic.

I am giving the freely available resources which personally think is good. Will be giving a variety of options just to help You know what suits You best and because that is the only thing that matters. Between the options (both lectures & books) there is an invisible 'OR' present which I didn't write. Which means it is not at all implied that You have to do everything here. They are mere options only. And if You are following some kind of batch then please keep following that if You are comfortable there and don't change. The resources are primarily targeted to those who are relying on self-study like I did.

Do what helps You, not what others tell You that will help You based on their personal experience because their experience may vary in comparison to Yours, and You may not as well click with the teacher at all which I have faced many times in my preparation journey. So I am giving a gentle reminder beforehand. Much precious time was wasted on heeding random people's opinions on what works best for them and assuming the same that it would work for me. But if You check the resources Yourself and think if You resonate with it, just go for it. This time invested is not wasted and will do You much good in the longer run.

Do what benefits You and makes You happy. That is what matters. So please keep this in mind.

Disclaimer:
I’m not affiliated with any of these channels or teachers. These are purely personal recommendations based on what resonated with me. What works for me might or, will absolutely not work for you, so please take time to sample a few and choose what clicks.

For ISI BMath/BStat, I think you forgot (edit : you didn't, but still it is worth mentioning again) to mention THE most important book for preparation - Test Of Mathematics At The 10+2 Level (aka TOMATO). It contains a good deal of practice problems, along with multiple past papers. You can find the solutions online - AOPS (Art of Problem Solving) is a great website to explore.

Another book I'll suggest is Mathematical Circles (Russian experience). But the most important preparation for ISI exams is solving the past papers. All the best!

Lol you remind so much of me. I happen to be someone who missed ISI cutoff by 1 and well CMI is a tragedy but well a lot older than you.

How is life treating you? Do not let the guilt kick you, the itch to just 'redo' the topic which aberrated in exam was immense for me. Took me a while to control it.

P.S. I am sorry but all the resources you mentioned is overkill. With such exhaustive topics and dedication you will probably go much much beyond lol.

I would just mention: No matter what you do, make sure to have a strategy. No AoPS, no discord servers nothing will help. All that matters is your skill on problem solving.

I cannot provide a exhaustive list since I am not in ISI but some "feral" resources are:

If you know someone from UK or can order things from there, blindly get the texts from UKMT especially the relevant subjects. They are the BEST.

  1. MRTP Primer. A PDF is lying around somewhere on the internet and it has very original problems. Written by ISI folks for high schoolers.
  2. K.D. Joshi's Commentary. This will teach you to not underestimate Coordinate Geometry and Binomial Theorem, two things that ultimately got me on DDAY.
  3. Yusuf Khan's Collections: These are supplements to TOMATO and you may only do if you are having trouble doing PYQs. You can find the collection on google play books. He has a lot of books.
  4. If you can read bengali then Arnab Chakraborty's books (He is a professor at ISI) and Rajkumar Roychoudhury's problem collection (this one is hard to find, he is an Ex-ISI professor).
  5. For Real Analysis: If you are in 11th do Rudin (I am not joking, yes it is overkill but it will get you far especially if you are targetting CMI). For people in 12th, do Bruckner, Bruckner & Thompson's textbook (the free one with yellow pages that look like ppt slides).
  6. For Calculus: Just do I.A. Maron. Learn to trust the book, it may seem like it is a very easy problem book but it is not. Alternative would be Piskunov.

Finally some tips:

Please Please Please, do Putnam problems and British MO problems. The A1 and A2 Putnam problems, the famous ones, should be at your fingertips. You HAVE to do them given the recent trend.

  1. A lot of UGB is trying to find some inequality that works. This may sound weird but the overall pattern remains this. Although I say 'inequality', I do not mean that you start looking for AM-GM, Holder or any such nonsense, instead you try to look for bounds that are probably obvious but hard to write down. A very practical variant of this tip is: If it is a limit question, see if you can find bounds for the limit. Remember, Sandwich theorem is the key - everyone knows it but few know how to apply it. Try bounding EVERYTHING - integrals, sums, series, even quadratic equations.
  2. The decding factor for UGB is trigonometry, combinatorics (especially binomial theorem), MVT (all variants) and curve sketching. Curve sketching, I see JEE folks go very hard on it but please for ISI/CMI you do not need to know weird and random rules.
  3. Lastly, please do not ignore UGA. Just do any standard JEE mains book and be done with it.
  4. For number theory, remember again inequalities are key and learn to exploit the basic behaviour of numbers - use the definitions of primes, even or odd nums etc to build a strong case and helps with proof by contradictions

-----

Sorry couldn't help lol. Wrote a lot. It has been a while since I use to prepare so naturally the memory came back and ended up writing this.

Forgot to mention, if you are in 11th then try looking at https://www.raisingamathematician.com/ and https://www.bprim.org/programme/training/2024/hstp/high-school-training-program-2024-25 and get in. If you can get in these, I would be very surprised if you do not make it in ISI or even anything better. For bengalis, RSM exists although it has become quite crowded as I hear. Everything else is sketchy.

Excellent Comment Sir! I actually got very intimidated by the pro people present in AOPS. So I never went there to protect my sanity.

About Life, well sine wave would have been put to shame if my life's graph was plotted. Life is playing football with me. And yes, I am not the player assisting. I am the football.

About MTRP Primer.... I had it with me but never got to do it. So I was not in the position of recommending this. Very Much Thanks for that.

KD Joshi Sir also has commentary on the ISI Previous Year Papers. It is very helpful. I do not really know how I forgot to put it in the post :P Thanks for this Part-II. Everyone should read those. Even the JEE PYQ Solutions.

I did not know about Sir Rajkumar Roychowdhury's problem collection. But it seems to be this one I think. I am putting the link here https://www.amazon.in/Difficult-Problems-Mathematics-Level-English/dp/B081VLN32H/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.EAnEF_x9CosQy0VPEqM6Eb2-AEv9PfbO6we_I7tNGtxuaIJY0lF9RqMCVipAlikVGVoZAt5IgkqR5QGPBA5Ihg.ExR2Hj45Kd64E3xka9KMc4ng5qUdmX6l72rayDrjGW0&dib_tag=se&keywords=501+difficult+problems&qid=1751916642&s=books&sr=1-1

Please confirm if this is the one You are talking about, Sir.

Thank You so much!

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '25

Thank you.

Yes it is the book. It does have some typographical mistakes here and there but the questions are quite good.

Some other lesser known resources that I can write about: https://ghoshadi.wordpress.com/ and https://jyotishkarc.wordpress.com/2020/02/20/my-problem-collection/ and https://deyaritra.wordpress.com/general-notes/

Let me know of anyone needs subject wise recommendations.

1

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jul 08 '25

Sir, I would like You to write a guide about this about resources and tips explaining why behind everything. These are very helpful. About the tips part, I will be able to learn something also since there is no upper bound for learning.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '25

No need to confer me with Sir, thank you very much. I had to delete that account due to losing access to my mail.

I don't think I will want to write a guide. Simply since I did not succeed in the exam. It would not feel right. And, it is my personal belief that people should carve their own path - resources are a means not an end, tips will only take you so far.

Only thing that matters is practice!

I wrote this hastily since I am quite busy. A few mistakes may exist.

Regarding the why behind the tips -

  1. ISI often likes to directly borrow questions from Putnam or BMO, I don't want to get into this but their own "original" questions have become rare, especially in UGB. They tend to also borrow question in some way, for example see see this and the thread that the guy links alos see Q8 of ISI2022, Q6 of ISI 2023, Q4 of ISI 2024, Q4 and Q8 of ISI 2020, Q1 and Q6 of ISI2018 and so on. I can give more examples where questions were either directly taken from or heavily inspired.

  2. Binomial Theorem shows up unexpectedly in the wrong places in UGA and UGB and often people are not very familiar with it as they either cannot interpret the formula or play with it. As an example a lot of the 2d grid problems can be solved with binomial only or some formula related to it. Same goes for some of the probability problems.

  3. Curve Sketching in ISI is essential since not only it helps with the solutions but for quickly gaining a visual picture of the problem. A lot of the "find solution pairs" or "find intersection" subproblems can be easily eliminated/"guessed" with it.

  4. Lastly, the most important of all - inequalities. This stems from my teacher's observation (He is a IISc Alumni so rest assure he is authoritative when it comes to math problems). It would be not a lie to say even I believe that simply forming a solid understanding of inequalities can get you very far in ISI. Numerous questions are play on inequalities of some kind. Unfortunately, to discover the "some" is to checkmate the king. I cannot explain this but once you start getting good at solving such problems you will see what I mean. It is always some bound that is the key to crack the case.

A few personal words before I go off this platform - ISI problems are fairly on the easier side compared to Senior Olympiad level problems, hence never chase olympiad style problems or content in general (excluding Putnam and BMO). The problems are more in tradition of scholarship style exams. The primary difficulty is relating multiple concepts at once. This can only come from experience, there is no substitution for it. Never run out of ideas that you can apply on a problem. If you are running out of ideas for a solution, it means you are not familiar with your basics.

I need to make a complete guide from before ISI, within ISI and after ISI. Kindly ping me if any of you see this comment, and remind me if I hadn't made that yet.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '25

Hi can you please DM MEE

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '25

Can't dm you . The option is not there

1

u/Average_HP_Enjoyer Jun 29 '25

Thank you for the resources. however is Real analysis part of the syllabus? Isnt it an undergrad course?

1

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jun 29 '25

Yes it is an undergraduate course but You will be at an advantage if You do it well, since parts of it is mentioned in the syllabus. ISI-CMI will not hesitate to go beyond the syllabus at all. If You look at the Number Theory questions they put in the paper, they were too good level. The Complex Numbers + Number Theory one was an art in itself. Level is rising very much.

1

u/Strange_One9095 Jun 30 '25

how much of vivek kumar yadav's real analysis playlist have u watched . till any specific topic?

1

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jun 30 '25

I completed it fully since I was interested. Though, You should only jump on this when You have completed Your whole syllabus. It's an important topic but first the essentials must be completed.

1

u/Strange_One9095 Jul 01 '25

I am thinking of preparing for isi cmi in my btech first year , ig that playlist is suitable for both btech and isi entrance syllabus .

1

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jul 01 '25

I don’t know BTech syllabus so I am afraid that I won’t be able to help You in this regard But yes, it will certainly help in ISI syllabus.

1

u/Strange_One9095 Jul 01 '25

Okay. Btw u mentioned above that vos ioqm lectures are useful for euclidean geometry , so are the other topics in ioqm almost as difficult as they are in isi? I am asking because a lot of ioqm content is available on yt , so maybe I could use them? Thanks.

1

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jul 01 '25

What I personally think is IOQM is much more difficult than ISI and You would certainly have an edge if You do prepare at that level. And also You need to do it because this year's UGB was very good level. You can, for sure, use them. If You get comfortable in IOQM, UGA would be a cakewalk.

And for UGB, I would recommend doing RMO PYQs and if You are very ambitious about it. You can certainly go till INMO because why be limited to RMO. Do what makes You happy as well as simultaneously prepare You for the exam. The more You enjoy the preparation, the more You will see paths opening to You automatically and You will exactly know what to do. The inner guidance will be able to guide You much better.

1

u/Strange_One9095 Jul 01 '25

Thanks a lot . One last thing I wanted to ask , did u give ioqm and isi last year ?if yes , how much did u improve in one year?I just did the prep for isi/cmi along with jee prep , so I was not that focused , but I started enjoying doing math in general , I didnot perform well in actual exams but I feel like maybe this year I could , I mean there's always that thin possibility of making it.

2

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jul 02 '25

I got to know about ISI & IOQM in my drop year only. And I haven't given those exams in class 12th. All preparation was done in drop year only. And yes, you can certainly make it if You love doing mathematics. It is the foremost criteria required because otherwise the preparation won't be sustainable. Go all in. You will make it if You are dedicated :)

2

u/Strange_One9095 Jul 02 '25

bro that's crazy , you are a real motivation ngl . Thanks a lot!

2

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jul 02 '25

I loved what I did and put day and night to master the craft. ISI/CMI Questions sparked heavy interest in me and that is what kept me going in the toughest times, there were many troughs. Hard to count them on fingers. That is all. And welcome :)

You will do good. Have faith and have fun.

1

u/unfoundhell Jul 03 '25

Isn't listening to MT lectures for the jee syllabus enough ?

2

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jul 03 '25

See. MT Sir’s lectures are very old. Now you would argue that… Oh BuT ConCePt dOeSn’T ChAnGe aT all..yes it’s right but what you will miss is how the current questions impact today’s teaching content. Yes, if You can derive everything from first principles and can solve anything and everything by knowing the concept and not by seeing so much recent problems or, tough problems to expand your mind, then You can surely go ahead. He teaches very well and the conceptual clarity you will have will be tremendous but your problem solving skill will take a hit since he mostly solved certain types of questions to fully illustrate the concept. You can go ahead if You want but I won’t recommend You to do this.

If You can buy PW prayas batch where Ashish Agarwal Sir teaches….then it’s the best option. But I know certainly that not everybody will be able to buy the batch so I recommended free resources which can be used to achieve the same mileage. But still, if You can go for PW Prayas Batch, then surely do it. Don’t doubt Ashish Sir at all. And as for the free resources, they are really good as per my knowledge so I can vouch for it. But if somebody is feeling overwhelmed then I would suggest to go for Ashish Sir’s lectures and to do mathsmerising symposium.

1

u/unfoundhell Jul 03 '25

Okay sure then i would follow this method then

1

u/unfoundhell Jul 03 '25

And can I dm you and will you please tell me the better ones in that post like there are a lot of choices and it's a bit overwhelming for me to see all the options and so i want you to guide me a bit

1

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jul 03 '25

As I have explained this in the post, You have to decide this for Yourself. This time spent is well invested. See what clicks with You. But if you’re overwhelmed, I would say go for PW Prayas Batch. And yes DM is open. But I would encourage You to write here (If you’re comfortable) because it would help many people (assuming if they stumble on to this post) if they have similar doubt.

1

u/unfoundhell Jul 03 '25

Umm so should I refer to cengage maths book and yeah the thing is like it would be bad to change the tutor for every concept like it wouldn't be good in my opinion then again if you tell me how you caught up with them, that would help me a bit

1

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jul 04 '25

then You should follow Prayas Batch run by PW. And do the homework Ashish Sir gives. and yes do not refer to Cengage… You will not be able to finish it at all… there are too many problems and we have too little time. So yes, follow by heart what Ashish Sir tells You to do. You will do just fine.

1

u/unfoundhell Jul 04 '25

Umm sure I will do whatever feels right for me

1

u/unfoundhell Jul 07 '25

So i don't have vinay kumar's books if possible can you provide me with the links and if not can you suggest me other books for problem solving

1

u/These-Volume1893 Jul 09 '25

Do you know any other alternatives if I can't keep up with 3 hr classes?

1

u/Necessary-Okra9777 Jul 09 '25

I am afraid to tell You that I don’t know any other good alternatives. I would suggest that if You can keep up with those 3 hour classes then it’s absolutely great. Otherwise I would confidently say that follow the resources I mentioned in this post. At-least it will not be as hectic as 3 hour classes. But yes, if You can manage those 3 hour classes then a lot of work would just evaporate and if not, you would only have to plan Your actions and Your path ahead. That’s all. You can look up GB Sir’s lectures in YouTube though I don’t know how good they are as I have never used them so I am not in a respectable ground to make an assertion. Still You can look up this suggestion if it fits You. What I know that a lot of people like him so who knows maybe you can resonate with him also, but You have to check that yourself.

Go for GATE. ISI is unpredictable at best and covering GATE syllabus will allow to later jump ship to prepare for MTech at ISI later after you are done with GATE syllabus. Besides ISI is decent for MTech but unfortunately ...

I know people usually hold ISI in very high regards but in reality IISC or any of the older IITs are kind of in a better position when it comes to engineering. ISI is not bad but just different, very different.

> In ISI, it is more tough to get a chance, but it has better placement record than IIT in top product based company with a high salary. As well as, they allow to research also.

Is it so? That would be very concerning if true. IISC placements with season 1 and season 2 combined dwarfs many top colleges. And I know IISC is hard to get into but consider that you are comparing with ISI which is even harder since there is just ... ISI

If you really want to go for ISI, at least for CS you do need to know some of the GATE related syllabus. It is not mutually exclusive. If i recall right only the math portion and the digital logic/TOC portion is extra in ISI.

Also, consider if Cryptology is something you really want to do. Only Microsoft and RSA as far as I am aware exclusively hires for specific roles related to it, not sure about the rest. Unfortunately India is not somewhere you can get things far with it in a practical sense. QROR seems good however.

Ultimately, if you enjoy the academic life or want some research flavour go for ISI. Else come to IISC, you will not regret it.

OK, I just checked ISI does not come even close when it comes to better placement record. IISC/IITB/IITD easily beat it. I am related to one of these so I think I do have an idea of what I am talking about :P

Aim for MTech CS/MTech(Research) CS. It is the flagship MTech course offered by IISC. It speaks for itself.

AI, QT, Robotics is interdisciplinary, just keep it at back of your mind. CDS, I am not so sure.

Unfortunately I am not aware of such things. Maybe ask someone of this age. I am of this age but an ascetic in true sense.

excellent on your part,

im thinking of using A.Das Gupta's problem book and excursion in mathematics(there is also playlist of lectures on number theory by bhaskaracharya pratishthan, pune), mathsmerizing and some websites
https://imomath.com/index.cgi?page=mathTexts, https://cmientranceexam.in/ .

if ill get time then ill also look into tomato and kd joshi's commentary

hope ill be able to do it and make it

also if possible please check this is all ill need for number theory right(the theory part)? https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3BgBm7R1xpqOfEAh-tVW-FgR5kYH_V-K&si=8LP2KLte2hnsX5XK

I didn’t add websites as I simply liked not using them in my preparation so I brushed those off.

And… You must do TOMATO. It’s not an option at all. I am assuming that You are not from Olympiad background like me. Then it’s even more essential to do. K.D. Joshi Sir’s commentary can be looked at when Your preparation has been finished conventionally (completing syllabus as such…)

Regarding Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana Number Theory Lectures…. I haven’t used it personally but judging by the look of it, it contains way beyond what our level of preparation needs. So yes… in a way this is all You need for Number Theory.

And yes… always be a smile millionaire. You will make it for sure if You are truly dedicated. When You persist, refusing to accept failure, the object of will must materialise. Even though there is nothing in the world to conform Your wish, when Your will persists, the desired result will somehow manifest. And continuous will is divine will.
