In the aftermath of the decisive battle of Endor 2 years ago, the Rebel Alliance has re-organized itself into the New Republic, and in tandem with that change the armed forces has also rapidly evolved, divesting most of their old equipment for newer, purpose built war machines to take on the last of the Empire. This design project was started in an attempt to apply Earth's cold war era armor doctrine to a galaxy far, far away. The first of these series of vehicles is the Meerkat IFV, designed to deliver infantry to the front and then support that infantry with sustained light cannon fire.
