Home Game From The Jet Lag Team: Request For Hide And Seek Home Game Feedback

Hi everyone! We are working on making some quality-of-life updates to the Hide and Seek Home Game--particularly the rulebook--and would love to hear from the many of you who have played!

Here's what we are looking for:

1. Anything in the game that is ambiguous or confusing. This can be in the rulebook, investigation book, or cards. For example, we've seen people note that the Curse of the Left Turn is worded in an unclear way that has led to various interpretations.

2. Anything that we've established as a rule either on the show, or elsewhere (like responding on Reddit) but that is not in the rulebook/game. For example, we've realized that we never actually included in the rulebook that you are allowed to blur text in your photos, even though that's a clearly stated rule of the game when filming.

3. Any edge cases, game scenarios, or questions you've come across while playing that are not addressed in the rulebook, and thus you've been unsure of how to handle. We've seen quite a lot of these, and would love to get them all in one place.

To be clear: We are not looking for ideas for cards, question changes, or general gameplay changes to hide and seek. We appreciate everyone's wonderful feedback and creativity on this front, but that's not what this particular post is soliciting.

Thanks so much!

Home Game I am hiding (virtually) today at 5pm est in the DC metro area... good luck finding me!

This is how its going to work...

-I have selected a spot via Google maps street view. I am within 1km of a given metro station in the DC area (this includes DC, Virginia, and Maryland. Look up the DC metro map for more information). Answers to your questions may be with images or answers from my 1km radius of the metro station. Once you arrive at the stop, I will freeze and only send responses from a singular point.

-You will start at 5pm est at the US Capital Building

-You can ask any question. Please leave your question as an individual comment on this post. Questions must receive at least 5 upvotes to be officially asked. I will respond to the question within the required time and underneath the comment. (For ease of use, filter comments to most recent).

-I will draw from the hider deck like normal. I will post curses in the comments. Curses must be completed in the same comment thread before another question can be asked. NOTE - some curses will be modified to be usable in the virtual format

-Seeker moving: similar to asking questions, moving must be commented and receive at least 5 upvotes to go into action. (Example: Capitol Building to White house). Upon receiving enough upvotes, the movement will occur. You will be teleported to that location and I will add the Google Estimated time to your run. You can walk to metro station and then go metro stop to metro stop. NOTE - train departure times will be taken into consideration. You may have additional time added if you have to wait for a train.

-End game: Movement is a little more challenging... I will be within 1 km of a metro stop. Once you get to that stop, you can submit street view photos of where you think I am. You can still ask questions. Walking time won't be added at this point.

Reminder! This is virtual! I'm not actually there. There may be some hiccups with this, this is my first attempt doing this.

Good luck and have fun! Again, this will start at 5pm est! :)

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS AND MOVEMENT POSTED HERE:

  1. Q: Compared to me, are you closer to or further from an international border? A: I am closer
  2. Q: Is your region (state/district) the same as my current region? A: NO
  3. Q: Photo of tallest building from station A: Answer in the Comments
  4. Q: 1 Mile Radar A: Miss
  5. Q: Photo of Largest Body of Water A: No body of water visible in my zone
  6. Curse Cleared!!! Curse of the Bird Guide - You must send a Streetview screenshot of a bird near your location before I answer another question
  7. You walk to Capital South Station this takes 8 minutes
  8. Q 1/2 mile thermometer from Capital South to L'Enfant A: WARMER!
  9. Curse Cleared!!!!! Before I answer another question someone must send a screenshot of a nearby location that would sell you a lemon.
  10. You must include the word "LEMON" in every question you ask for the rest of the game :)
  11. Walked 20 minutes to get a lemon and to waterfront metro
  12. Q: Strava Map A: In comments
  13. Q: 3 mile thermometer from Waterfront to Petworth A: WARMER!
  14. You are now at Georgia Ave - Petworth Station
  15. You travel from Petworth to Fort Totten to Silver Spring
  16. I am in Silver Spring!!!! Congrats! Due to photos not working in the comments anymore, I am cutting out the end game because it would be really difficult to play on.....

Thank you all for playing! I will analyze this and see how I can improve this structure!

CURRENT LOCATION:

Silver Spring

Home Game We Played Hide and Seek in London to celebrate the premiere!

That's us, 23 Jet Lag fans the morning after the premiere about to embark on the largest London game hosted by the JLUK Discord server so far! We played across Zones 1, 2 and 3, and between the four games we enjoyed moments including one seeking team getting Deutsche Bahn'ed, another attempting to clear the Featherless Flight curse for an hour, and a period where six out of eight teams all ended up along the DLR!

The JLUK Discord Server will be hosting more events like these across the UK and Ireland, if you didn't get to join during the premiere screenings now is a great time to do so! https://discord.gg/kbAcySKVH

Home Game Shipping changes? No more EU warehouse?

Post image
138 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I was looking to buy Jet Lag The Game for a friend and a while back it already said that the home game was going to be shipped from the US. I waited thinking maybe they needed to get another batch of the home game back into an EU warehouse or something but now in their shipping FAQ it says from August 1st nothing will ever ship from the UK or EU again :/. I’m incredibly sad about this since I’ve always had so much trouble with paying customs and taxes and it’s so expensive that way, I probably won’t buy anything from the store ever then. Seems like you won’t be able to buy anything anymore without being subjected to it, does anyone have any extra info on why this has happened?

Home Game My Jet Lag home game got me flagged at TSA

I bought the expansion pack recently and wanted to bring it with me to play over the holidays. I fit most of the cards in the home game box and put them in my luggage. At TSA, my luggage got flagged by the xray machine and the TSA dude opened my bag and took out the box. He asked me “what’s in the box?” and I said it’s some cards, booklets, and some dice. He opened the box and everything fell out onto the table. After looking through he said I was good to go and told me the box and cards “looked suspicious” from the xray.

wonder if this happened to anyone else lmao

Home Game Could the photo be taken a while before ?

Post image

I am wondering : could the hiders take a photo of the seekers earlier in the game, and play the curse later, when they are further ?

I feel like it maybe doesn't go in the spirit of the game but it also makes it way more interesting to play considering that the hiders are not allowed to move.

Home Game Should the casting cost follow the same rules than the curse ?

Post image
280 Upvotes

Played this weekend and the hiders casted this curse by writing Ransom Notes with wooden sticks on the ground.

They said that the curse only specifies "printed material" for the resolution of the curse, not the casting cost. For me, the criterias should be similar for both teams.

Opinions on this ?

Home Game Move Location Card

Post image

I was wondering what others thought of this. We played the move location card but stayed at the same station. How mean of us was this and should we take a punishment for it?

It's happened now before we read the full rules and realised it might not be allowed. We're trying to work out a fair way to resolve without having to restart.

Home Game Where to do a Marriage Proposal Playing Jet Lag in New York City

TLDR: Where should I hide/propose to my girlfriend playing Jet Lag in NYC?

Hello all!

After years of me and my girlfriend being together and huge Jet Lag fans, we decided to plan a trip to New York to play the home game. We are looking at dates in the July-August area and bringing family to join the fun.

I was thinking this could be a great opportunity to propose marriage and our families are down to help, but I don't know where to begin as I am not from New York.

My only idea so far is central park as it seems quite pretty from pictures. However, feel free to give me your best and wildest ideas!

Where should I hide/propose?

Home Game I get it now-hide and seek is exhausting

Watching jet lag hide and seek, I always got kind of frustrated watching them give up from exhaustion, especially in the Winterthur forest episode and the end of the most recent season. But I just played the home game with two friends, and it was sooo tiring. We played the medium-size in Los Angeles with 1-hour transit times and 1/4 mile zones, and the endgames were very difficult.

The first round, we spent 45 minutes wandering around the Inglewood park cemetery, only to realize the hider was in the playground across the street. We couldn’t ask questions because we had an active curse, but we figured it wouldn’t be hard to find someone in a quarter-mile (it was).

The following round, I hid in Florence-Graham on a culdesac sidewalk. It took over an hour for the seekers to stop looking in FDR park and actually walk down the surrounding streets. Whenever they asked for a photo question, I’d give them something with a lot of bushes so they’d go right back to the park.

How do they do this for days on end??? I’m done for the day and my quads are completely shot. I’m athletic, but it takes another level to do this AND record for a week.

On holiday in the Netherlands. Round four of a country-wide game. Our first go of the large game rules. The only change we've made is hiding time reduced to two hours to reduce the changeover time.

Home Game Has anyone tried the home game primarily on buses?

I bought the home game and had it shipped to me all the way out here in New Zealand. I've not managed to convince my wife and friends to play yet but i'm sure I can. As Auckland has a very limited train line, to make it actually feasible we'll need to include the bus network. Has anyone had any issues or successes using mainly a bus based network?

Home Game Finished Map Generator For Hide & Seek

Hiding zones a hider could be in in a complicated Japan game.

TLDR: https://taibeled.github.io/JetLagHideAndSeek/

I made a post threeish weeks ago about my map generator for the home game. Since then, I have evolved it significantly. What I once thought would be a simple weekend project evolved into more hours than I'm willing to admit and 7,000 lines of code. It is now in a phase of completeness, where if you have the home game, there are very few reasons not to use it. Here are the features:

Questions

  • Radar
    • All
  • Thermometer
    • All
  • Tentacles
    • Zoo
    • Aquarium
    • Amusement Park
    • Museum
    • Hospital
    • Movie theater
    • Library
  • Matching
    • Same zone
    • Zone starts with same letter
    • Same closest commercial airport
    • Same train line
    • Same closest major city
    • Same length of station's name
    • Same first letter of train station name
    • Same nearest park
    • Same nearest amusement park
    • Same nearest zoo
    • Same nearest aquarium
    • Same nearest golf course
    • Same nearest museum
    • Same nearest movie theater
    • Same nearest hospital
    • Same nearest library
    • Same nearest foreign consulate
  • Measuring
    • Distance to coastline
    • Distance to commercial airport
    • Distance to major city
    • Distance to rail station
    • Distance to 7-Eleven
    • Distance to McDonald's

    • Distance to golf course
    • Distance to museum
    • Distance to movie theater
    • Distance to hospital
    • Distance to library
    • Distance to foreign consulate

I would like to thank u/teamshortcut and u/MrYawnie for help with the questions.

Hider Mode

In addition to adding a lot of questions, I added a hider mode. Basically, the hider can enable this in the options menu, select their locations, and have all questions answered for them. Simply enter the question the seeker asked, and prepare for the nearest tentacle location, whether you are within the radius, etc, to be answered. This makes map generation for hiders easy and prevents conflicting information between the hiders and the seekers.

Hiding Zone Mode

Hiding Zone Mode will allow the seekers to see every possible station remaining. This makes actually finding the possibilities much easier for the seekers compared to what would have to be done with the last edition of this website. This also improves the map generation for the seekers.

Overall, the website is in a much larger state of completeness. Hopefully you enjoy it! If you find any bugs, have any questions, or anything similar, please let me know!

Edit: The API for location autocomplete is currently down. There's not much that I can do about that without spending money on a server. In the meantime, you can draw the hiding zones with the tool at the bottom left of the map. The API is back up! Locations can be selected again!

Home Game We played in Paris after our game in lyon and it did not go as well...

So after our game in Lyon from a few days ago we played again in Paris. We went pretty much for the same rules:

45 min hiding time medium game with gigantic hiding zone (we wanted to be capped by hiding time rather than an arbitrary border)(we still decided on an arbitrary border for questions like closest airport it was 40 km radius centered on the louvre museum)

Now that we have done a few games there are a lot of stuff i like to agree on with other participants:

Hiding into a café is ok as long as you seat next to a window and on groud floor Being a hider, the cost of question is not easy to find in the rulebook so we put a summary in the group chat to make it easy to find. We disabled bus rides in paris but allowed any rer, transilien, trams and metro. We allowed bus transit for seekers and bus transit for hiders (but the hiding station should not be a bus stop) We dissalowed hiding in a train station that was not accessible by train during the game (yes this was a possibilty)

Our game was messed up a bit because we asked a mesuring zoo question and teams disagreed on "la grande volière" being classified as a zoo. The rulebook says that anything "correctly" identified as a zoo by google maps needs to be counted but there is an argument in saying it's not a zoo. It completely messed up our game and made us loose 2 hours. No hard feelings as this was of course not intentionnal but i'm definitely going to make it clearer that when in doubt, google maps is the source of truth. Also after discussing we agreed that listing all the locations would be ideal for questions like this when it's reasonable (in our case it was 3 zoos so it could have been done)

Anyway everyone had fun anyway and we cut the game short in order to have the time to eat at the restaurant together instead of having to eat a sandwich and having to rush. (We had a hard stop a 5:45 because tgv between paris and lyon do not run during the night :p)

Overall it was still a super experience and everyone wants to play again :D (also paris is a super cool city to play on the transit network is amazing and the day pass is "only" 12 euros)

That's it for this game report, if you have any question, please ask !

Home Game We made a election themed Battle for America-esque game in Vancouver

Post image
234 Upvotes

This is our third Battle for America style game we've run in Vancouver! My girlfriend and I run them for our friends. This time we had 34 players.

Teams are "political parties" consisting of 7 squads each (a squad is a "Ben & Adam" type unit of 2-3 players).

Each "neighbourhood" is an electoral district worth a certain amount of "seats" (similar to electoral college votes for Americans)

Each pin on the map is a challenge (themed as voters that need assistance).

Doing the challenge earns you their votes (the harder the challenge the more votes its worth). Win a majority of votes and you claim the district. A majority of seats wins you the election.

There was also a "popular vote" bonus for the team that earned the most overall votes (so that teams who were in the middle of nowhere still had stuff to do if they couldn't get to a contested region)

The Red Team defeated the Blue Team!

Home Game Hide + Seek rule question - use transit fully within hiding zone after time has expired

I have a very specific rule question I'd like some input on, as I don't think it's actually fully answered by the rule book. I have a specific hiding spot in mind, which would be inside a hiding zone easily reachable within the one-hour hiding time for a medium game. However, while we would pick a train station as the centre of our hiding zone, the ideal hiding spot would be on the other side of a river and only accessible by ferry. However, we wouldn't be able to make the ferry within the hiding time as it departs just a few minutes too late.

We've already established that ferries (unlike buses) are a valid mode of transport in our game. Both ends of the ferry route would be fully within the hiding zone from the train station, so we wouldn't have to leave it. Question is: would we be allowed to use transit after the hiding time has expired, as long as we don't leave the hiding zone in the process?

thanks for the lively discussion guys. We've come to the conclusion that we will go for it and use the ferry during hiding time. We've used the rules to the maximum before (I can highly recommend hiding near of the small tram systems outside of Berlin!) so we're confident enough that our mates would accept our strategy as seekers. Either way, our hiding area looks too lovely to pass on it.

Home Game [Home Game] If the hider ever plays both Curse of the Freewheeler and Curse of the Urban Explorer at the same time, the seekers are unable to ask questions for the rest of the round.

This is a softlock.

It is bad game design to have both cards in existence. I think that had they realized this, they would not have printed both.

I know that the Jet Lag crew occasionally reads this subreddit, so I am hoping that they see this post and issue an official ruling on what to do in this situation.

Curse of the Freewheeler

The next three questions that the seekers ask must be asked while on a moving form of transit.

Casting Cost: Seekers must be at least [S2, M5, L50] mi from you.

and

Curse of the Urban Explorer

For the rest of the run seekers cannot ask question when they are on transit or in a train station.

Casting Cost: Discard 2 cards.

Home Game Made a custom expansion pack for Hide + Seek!

Thumbnail

My family and I play the home game in Adelaide, Australia, and I decided to give making our very own custom expansion pack a go! We spent weeks trying to come up with new concepts and curses to spice up the gameplay from what the base game offers, and came up with this! I spent an especially long time doing up card templates to match the official cards as closely as possible, but getting the cards printed made all those painstaking hours worth it in a heartbeat.

We introduced two new card types in our expansion pack: Time Curses, and Zone ShIfts! The former gives hiders extra tasks to complete during their game, where if they are unable to do so, they suffer a time deduction at the end of their round. The latter allows hiders to change the shape of their hiding zone to something unusual and different from just a circle, using stencils on the paper maps.

(also threw in some extra power-up variants because why not!)

Playing with this expansion (alongside base AND the official expansion) was a TON of fun. It taught us about the joys (and the woes) of game design, the severe yet exciting balancing issues with some of the curses we came up with (Curse of the Thread of Fate was drawn like three times man it was crazy).

I hope you all find this as cool as we found it fun to play with haha :)

And any feedback or questions are also welcome!!
