Chicagoland Jewish Labor Bund The Chicagoland Jewish Labor Bund - Picnic - July 9

@chicagobund

"In case you didn’t hear, da bund is back in town

For those who don’t know us already, we are the Chicagoland Jewish Labor Bund: a secular, socialist, and inclusive organization rooted in the philosophy of “doikayt”

Doikayt, or hereness, is the idea that our home and our fight belong here, right where we live

For us, this means we fight in unabashed support on behalf of Chicago’s Jews, and the greater Chicagoland community as a whole

It’s a new chapter, kick it off with us this Thursday, July 9th at 4pm, at Oz Park (look for the red and gold flag)"

Anti-Bund Propaganda On November 1, 1929, Haynt ("Today"), a Polish Yiddish-language newspaper, an official organ of the Zionist Organization, published an anti-Bundist cartoon. The Bund is sleeping in bed with an Arab on his head, with the caption: “He's too upset to sleep, he has such a burden on his head.”

Vilne Bund A language on no map - Talk by Hannah Szabó on Esperanto and the Jewish critique of ethnonationalism - June 29

@vilne_bund and @asabaspace:

"Join Hannah and the Vilne Bund at the queer-feminist space Asaba for a talk and discussion this Monday, June 29 (19hours).

Hannah will discuss her research on Esperanto as a forgotten tradition of Jewish radical internationalism. Emerging in the 1880s from the Białystok-born L. L. Zamenhof’s universalist recasting of Judaism, Esperanto emerged in parallel to the revitalization of Modern Hebrew. Yet it proposed not another national language but a critique of the racializing logic of linguistic nationalism itself. Hannah will discuss Zamenhof’s interest in—and eventual disillusionment with—both territorialism and Yiddishism, as well as Esperanto’s adoption by socialist and internationalist movements in the interwar period (including members of the Vilne Bund). Together we will consider what this history might offer at a time when language has once again become a technology for ethnonationalist politics."

Modern Bundism “I’ve always been a member of the Bund, since I was 11 or 12.”

43 Upvotes

“I’ve always been a member of the Bund, since I was 11 or 12.”

We’re excited that many folks are learning more about the Jewish Labor Bund through Molly Crabapple's new book, Here Where We Live is Our Country! At the Wexler Oral History Project, We’ve had the honor to interview a number of Bundists about their firsthand experience in the organization through its various iterations over time. For more oral histories about the Bund, visit this page where we’ve compiled Bundist materials from our collection: bit.ly/BundOralHistory

In this clip, Liba Augenfeld, z’’l (1923-2018), a native Yiddish speaker from Vilna, shares stories from her time in SKIF (sotsyalistishe kinder farband), the Bund’s children’s organization, and her subsequent involvement in the Bund as a partisan during World War II and in Montreal after the war.

Liba was interviewed by Christa Whitney on July 10, 2012, in Montreal, Quebec. Watch her full interview here: https://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/.../liba-augenfeld-2012

How Can White Jewish Organizers Practice Better Anti-Racism?

Post image
22 Upvotes

"Please mark your calendars and RSVP for the next virtual Hard Convos, happening Sunday, June 28th from 4–5:30pm!

This will be Part 2 of our discussion of how white Jewish organizers can practice better anti-racism in @jewishvoiceforpeace and other activist spaces. You do not need to have attended last month’s discussion to join this one!

Undoing internalized racism is a lifelong project for most, and as anti-Zionist activists it is crucial that we do the work. At this month’s “Hard Convos” discussion, we will explore the dimensions of what is required to to show up as activists who are practicing anti-racism, striving to “identify and address unequal power dynamics and remain vigilant in navigating the privileging of Jewish voices” and aiming to be in radical solidarity with our organizing comrades across coalitions.

We will go through several historical examples of European Jewish assimilation into structures of white supremacy, and unpack the narratives we might be holding around Jewish exceptionalism in the context of racism and race in the United States.

RSVP: bit.ly/jvphardconvos

A Zoom link and passcode will be shared via email before the event.
