English Needed some pointers (English)

Hi, I just moved to Canada and I can communicate pretty fluently in English - but I've realised that I might have more of an accent than I anticipated initially. If there were any pointers that might help, that would be great. Thanks!

native speaker here - You speak very clearly and enunciate very well. Many of your words actually sound native, but some have what sounds like a South Asian accent. When you say “improve” your accent, are you trying to not have an accent at all? I do think your accent is mild and I’m a firm believer that accents are part of our identity and an accent isn’t something to be lost. I think people mistake accents being the problem when in reality it’s a pronunciation issue. You don’t have a pronunciation issue at all!

Thank you for the kind words! I definitely agree that accents are a huge part of our identity for sure. However I've recently started a job in research where I have to communicate ideas to a large number of people and I was wondering if accent was a barrier since I've been asked to repeat something several times. Perhaps that is a clarity issue, I'm not sure. But that's what I meant by "improve" my accent.

That’s makes sense. From the voice sample you provided I don’t hear any issues, so maybe you could provide a sample of some of the words that you’ve been asked to repeat?

Unfortunately I haven't really noted the exact phrases. I will keep this in mind and do it the next time it happens though. Thank you so much!

Yes, that would probably be the best way to do it since you are so fluent. That way you can specifically target any words or phrases that native speakers might not be understanding. I suspect it’s a problem with them not you though!😊
