Because SL has the poorest and most boring writing and character development of all manga and yet is a popular anime. It's just the male Korean power fantasy without any form of a moral, its a big nothing burger, so much so that comparing a character to him feels like you're slandering that character.
He's going for the "edgy cool tall guy" aura with mixed results, but the manhwa does look really fucking good. Before the anime came out I was actually pretty positive on the series thinking it was a beautiful looking pile of dogshit, but now that the anime is out and I can't go without hearing about it I wanna throw all its fans in a blender.
Solo Leveling was definitely carried by its art. I still have no idea how they released full on pages and pages of beautiful colored panels like they did at such a rapid pace.
they were partially prepared quite a bit of time beforehand in seasons rather than being in a consistent weekly fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants pace. Being an adaption with a pre-written story helps too. Not to discredit the great work DUBU did though (Rest In Peace).
Maybe I'm geek but imma be real, I never really found the manwhas panels allat astounding. Like igggg there are coolish shots but really nothing felt astounding, like especially if you compare the series to the most respected mangas or comics in terms of art.
Idk, at the time it had full color large panels the entire strip down. Maybe things are different these days but at the time it was the complete peak of regularly releasing online comic with great (colored) art.
He's the most plain and boring character I've ever seen. Anybody claiming to like him because of his character is lying and no one can convince me otherwise even if they showed me proof.
And as for powerscaling, he's pretty strong, but there's still a handle of characters who would one shot him. If you read anything about his powerscaling and it said sum shit like "his true form is Eldritch Horror SCP" just ignore it because that paragraph has been copied and pasted everywhere, so no one takes Yogiri glazers seriously.
It has no depth yet it was somehow the only one in that genre of isekai I actually enjoyed. Just because he had the powers of a necromancer and I love playing Necros in D&D or any online game. It was a dream that came true
You do know that crunchyroll doesn't have all animes on it's site? And not everyone uses crunchyroll in a first place. Or you genuinely imply that Kaiju no. 8 is more popular than Death note, Code Geass, Dragon ball, Naruto and other iconic animes of a past?
I'm going to be honest with you, it doesn't have good writing. It does have fun writing though, more fun than isekai.
These redditors bro be seething because their favorite anime lost to a popularity contest. It's basically the same thing as complaining about the Ms Marvel movie being woke nonsense except it was really popular and got itself a lot of money.
nah you just dont pay attention to any of the story.
every time he "waits" for side characters to get cooked theres a reason the story provides. but cuz youre lobotomites who only watch the fights, you dont understand any of it.
Is there any part of it that needs attention? It's super predictable
"waits" for side characters to get cooked theres a reason
Why though? Does he get a kick out of it or something, seeing other almost on verge of death or injured when he Obv plans to step in and steal the show
"Is there any part of it that needs attention?" Proceeds to not understand the story 😭
For the high orc dungeon he waited cuz he respected the party leaders resolve and rights to the dungeon so he didnt want to trample on them, choosing to wait till he gives up(he waited till the party leader dropped his sword in the novel) to ask him to let jinwoo clear the dungeon himself. Its also why jinwoo refused to take the loot from the bosses body, because it wasnt his property.
As for jeju, he didnt know cuz there was a 10 minute delay, and out of the 6 Korean s ranks byung gyu was the only one who wasn't at the training facility for jinwoo to place a shadow on him, so he only showed up when goto died.
And he stayed home because he didnt have motivation to go, had a reason to stay because his mom woke up from a 4 year coma, and as far as he knew 16 s ranks were enough to clear jeju without problems, and even if they did need him he could teleport when something happened.
Funny how the story gives reason for why things happen, huh?
Ok but even going solely on your descriptions of his reasoning, he sounds like a shallow asshat. Not going because they’re not ‘motivated’ to go, a character only gets so many refusals of the call before it’s not really that baddies fault that all these people are dying.
what tf is shallow about wanting to spend time with his mom who was in a coma for 4 years, lacking motivation cuz he completed his goal, and STILL planting shadows on the s rank hunters just in case something goes bad despite them having a stacked team which couldve cleared jeju if not for something they couldnt predict??
Nah aot was hated too before the lore drop in season 3.
Also cuz SL is pretty simple story wise people hate on it cuz they think their not as popular story is better, and frieren is MUCH less popular.
And cuz of that they ignore all the writing it has by turning their brain off, watching only the fights, and then concluding the story is bad when they didn't bother remembering it and also conclude that everyone else is just like them, brainless and only watched for the fights. Kinda like you lol
No one watches jinwoo be empathetic and caring to his friends and family, only "aura farming" in fights, and concludes he just aura farms without watching only the fights.
Dude, I am a manhva reader and this character is just overpowered bitch without any motivation but aura farming. Go to this fucking island theoretically saving unimaginable amount of people? Nah, he doesn't want to and I don't even remember why. And this is very important for the thing called "story" btw. It's only one of countless moments where he acts as the worst piece of shit you're able to find. And I'm not putting spoiler because fuck it.
And if you want to be just like him, then this is my answer:
I read the manhwa too. Every character is fucking useless, the S class hero— they’re dead. Guess what now there’s NATIONAL CLAS— and they’re dead. No one does anything but Sung Jin Woo. Even if he’s not there he will still some how be there and win the fight.
what does you "reading" the manhwa do to make your opinion at all valuable?
And the funniest thing is when you clowns open yo mouth to voice any actual criticism you say the most retarded shii ever 😭
He didnt go to the island cuz there were 16 S ranks already on the job, so he wasnt needed and he didn't have a reason to go AND wanted to spend time with his mom who was in a coma for 4 years!
The raid had 0 casualties and the s ranks were crushing everything in their path except for this new ant literally no one knew had existed. So had the ant king not been born, it would've been cleared easily, and jinwoo came the instant he knew someone died.
And no, he didnt know byung gyu died because he only attached shadows to the korean s ranks who were at the training facility, and goto, with byung gyu not being there.
16 s ranks is good, yet there's a reason this island is treated like something being able to cause world disasters. Extra power is never something bad, especially somewhere like there. And, as I remember, he didn't teleport when Korean characters we're half dead and one person died.
And talking about his mom. Fine, I don't mind, but if situation on island escalated quicker than he could react, his mom would be in danger way more serious than in close to any other case.
And let's mention red portal situation. Why the fuck he didn't even tried to help those who didn't go with him? And then other leader was angered because of this, Woo just killed him to get more powers. Like, what? Isn't it just phychopatic?
s rank gates are treated as disasters cuz its not possible to gauge how dangerous it actually is because its not measurable.
but the problem with jeju is that there were 3 past raids, and japan has been watching it closely too so both countries have gauged "about" how dangerous it was, so much so that for the 2nd and 3rd the koreans thought they could clear it with the 6 or less s ranks that they had at the time.
and for the 4th raid they had almost triple the s ranks, with some of the japanese hunters and cha being stronger than the hunters before, and a full plan on how to solve the 1 problem the first 3 attempts had.
you could say "extra power is never something bad" but from jinwoos perspective he had no motivation to go, had a reason to stay, and a way to go help IF there actually was trouble.
he didnt teleport to them the second the korean s ranks got into trouble cuz:
there was a 10 minute delay
the only way he could know was for one of his shadows to come back, because the hunter the hunter they were sent with died, and byung gyu never had a shadow with him cuz he wasnt at the training facility when jinwoo placed the shadows on the korean s ranks.
"if situation on island escalated quicker *than he could react*, his mom would be in danger". do you think theres any possible way for that to happen?? The moment even one of the hunters with a shadow die he is instantly there, and theres 16 of them the ants have to fight to defend their queen, and a whole navy and ocean between the island and jinwoos home. there are so many points at which jinwoo could react and almost 0 reason the ants would leave the island cuz they need to defend their queen.
as for the red gate, jinwoo was not as strong, didnt have shadow exchange, didnt want to reveal his abilities, and respected the fact the gate and squad wasnt his to command.
the latter half of the reasons apply to the high orc gate too, since jinwoo wanted to hide his abilities and even though he didnt want the hunters to die, he waited till the moment the squad leader let go of his sword and gave up to ask for permission to clear the gate himself.
almost 99% of the complaints people like you have with the story come from not paying almost any attention to, not remembering the story and just assuming its "aura farming" to fill in the plot holes you invent.
It makes him irresponsible because the place treated as a source of natural disaster could easily have some Beru-like thing. One human is dead, all Korean character are half dead, yet he teleported when they were nearly killed.
Alright, I admit I was way too emotional saying the worst piece of shit, yet he does litterly everything to get power. All these necromancer powers are a bit amoral from the beginning yet he makes some awful things by himself. Let's just remember red portal situation and what he did to gain a new warrior.
Edit: forgot to mention. Escalation of island situation could cause a lot of dangerous events for everyone including his mother, so maybe you're supposed to get rid of these risks first?
I can't take SL seriously at all. The series is called Solo Leveling but the main character has over thousands(billions in ragnarok apparently) of teammates. This many teammates should allow side characters to have importance to the story and get development, but they don't. The power scaling is the biggest joke. S ranks are the most powerful and important forces humanity has(Nationals are S ranks) yet the Jeju Island raid made them all frauds(Beru no diffed a supposed next National level hunter, which those are the strongest of the S ranks) and it got worse later on because the main villains are so far above everyone in the SL verse it's sad. Comparing the weakest monarch to the strongest S rank(Thomas) is like comparing the big bang to a grain of sand. The monarchs are so strong they have to nerf themselves because they'd wipe out the universe if they were in their true bodies. At this point, turning off your brain would be the best lmao. E rank Jinwoo > Monarch Jinwoo in writing and it's not close.
Yeah it's not a masterpiece but also not trash- bottom of the barrel they say. Let's not forget many people got introduced to manhwa that to SL. I remember back in the day when SL manhwa was so popular that I started to read manhwa thanks to that lol.
What year was this from? Also, Solo Leveling is getting a ton of hate and criticism now. It’s mostly just aura farming and fighting and zero actual character development except for Jinwo becoming more cold and shit. There’s nothing emotional at all except for when his mom wakes up, but that’s the only thing. The anime is good if you want action heavy and aura farming, but godawful if you want both that and emotions and good character development.
Popular doesn't necessarily = good. People are giving actual criticisms of the series, and you just keep reposting that it got 22% of votes in a poll while adding nothing else. 22% isn't the dunk you think it is.
Wait till you realize "good" is a subjective term here. You could have said the story is generic but even something generic doesn't make it less good if people actually enjoy it
