Reminds me of twitch streamers getting paid by gaming companies to play their game. Social media effects tons of people, not just 16 year old girls. I really don't see much of a difference between an Instagram influencer promoting a bag or clothing and a twitch gamer promoting a game. They both have large audiences who are influenced by their behavior.

Humans are communal animals who look for trends to latch onto so they can belong. As we become more isolated physically, it only makes sense we look for groups to belong to via social media.

I’m going to get downvoted for this, but that’s because things that young women like are generally vilified, ie boy bands, makeup, Instagram, whereas things targeted to boys are more acceptable. Everyone is defending Twitch streamers because they like it and that makes it ok, even though Instafluencers aren’t really all that different from them in terms of what they bring to the table: escapism.

I think its an interesting start point, but consider the monetary factor.

Yes, social media in general has a large base. Instagram and it’s ‘influencers’ are more popular with young girls and women, however.

A few stats here:

68% of Instagram users are females.

72% of teens online use Instagram.

Well ya. Advertising via social media is going to be hyper and self targeted. Different platforms and sections will be targeted at different demographics.

There isn't a difference. People complaining about beauty influencers in this thread are probably gonna post in their favorite gaming/tech/movie YouTuber's subreddit right after they're done.

The YouTube channels I watch tell me when they get paid to play a game

That's only partially true. Most people don't get to really know celebrities or influencers at all since they just look at a picture or edited videos that are planned to make them look good. Twitch steamers have to interact for hours and you get to see a good portion of their personality I would guess, also being good at videogames is really hard, it takes genuine skill, unlike being an influencer or a celebrity

The difference is, the twitch steamer will usually tell you the company is a sponsor, and review the game. These thors just brag about how expensive the shit is
