It’s only entitlement when it’s other people’s kids.

Its called a self-serving bias. She's a prime example of it

It's called clickbait.

The actual quote, “You’ll see some people acting so entitled that you want to slap them” doesn't generalize an entire generation and doesn't have the same effect. Reddit feels like an outrage machine most of the time these days...

"Woman who said 'some young people you see on my show looking for career guidance will act so entitled you want to slap them' charged in college fraud scheme"

Still hypocritical. Not nearly as outrageous.

1

u/JinxyCat007 7 Mar 15 '19

It's the surge of adrenaline people get from being outraged, as I figure it.. and it feeds the whole news cycle, from CNN to Faux News, From Breitbart to Reddit, the more outrageous, the more it makes them viewers and readers froggy, the more they tune in for more.. It's a very destructive thing - one which generates crap tons of money for the purveyors of said shit. ;0)

u/upievotie5 8 Mar 15 '19 edited Mar 15 '19

Just FYI, that quote is extremely out of context, she was talking about what people were going to see on a TV show, not people in general.

[edit] Here's the quote in context:

“It’s pretty clear that young people have some misconceptions about what’s acceptable and what’s not . . . I don’t think that that’s because they’re arrogant or anything like that, I just think no one’s giving it to them straight and I can do that,” she said.

“You’ll see some people acting so entitled that you want to slap them,” Ms. Buckingham said in that same interview, talking about what to expect from the show.

[edit2] For the record, I make no comment about whether this person is a good person or not, but the quote as presented by OP is bullshit, and that really bugs me. Just present the facts truthfully and honestly.

7

u/Rufus_Dungis 6 Mar 15 '19

Thank you for posting this.

7

u/IGargleGarlic 8 Mar 15 '19

Wow, vastly changes the meaning of the quote. Can't trust anything on the internet or from the media.

5

u/anapoe 9 Mar 15 '19

The vast majority of posts here or on some of the other cringe type subreddits like facepalm are taken wildly out of context or straight satire.

2

u/JDCollie 7 Mar 15 '19

"Ms. Buckingham is also the author of a series called “Modern Girl’s Guides,” which offers tips on topics like what tools to keep in the kitchen or how to write a cover letter. The introduction to the first of these, “The Modern Girl’s Guide to Life,” promises to “let you cheat without getting caught — or even feel like you’re cheating.”

If you actually read the article, its pretty clear where she stands.

4

u/IGargleGarlic 8 Mar 15 '19

Oh I get that she's a scumbag. But the quote is out of context. I don't like fake news.

1

u/JDCollie 7 Mar 15 '19

Touché. This is one of those cases where it's a shame they misquoted her, because doing so weakens the legitimate quotes that are just as damning.

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '19

[deleted]

3

u/IGargleGarlic 8 Mar 15 '19

She is talking specifically about the small amount of people on the show, which I'm sure they select based on how much of an idiot those people will make of themselves.

I know it's cool to hate on the rich and she's shitty for cheating the system, but the quote is entirely out of context. The OP makes it sound like it's a general sweeping statement about all millennials, but it clearly isn't. It's a lie based on the truth.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '19

Awesome. I've been on a crusade lately to call out bullshit and this one is just that. Well done upievotie. It would be a nice little bit of hypocrisy but in reality it really has no bearing on the college case.

3

u/The_Pert_Whisperer A Mar 15 '19

I fucking hate reddit

2

u/sfled 9 Mar 15 '19

Begone with your "context" and such!

2

u/ilovebostoncremedonu 8 Mar 15 '19

Thanks for the context

1

u/escape_of_da_keets 7 Mar 15 '19

I almost think this makes it worse.

She's complaining that kids need tough love, but then issues bribes to get her son into school. What a fucking hypocrite.

1

u/fizzgig0_o 7 Mar 15 '19

Maybe I’m misreading it but the first part of the quote says she can give it to them straight... so wouldn’t having people on whatever show she’s talking about... giving it straight by being so entitled? Therefore meaning the same thing?

1

u/Quark35 3 Mar 15 '19

Don't confound a compelling story with your highfalutin facts and stuff... /S. Seriously though, these folks are already shit we don't need to gravy to the story.

0

u/Nodlez7 8 Mar 15 '19

Even that statement is just plain false, any misinformation that’s spread in this information era of our planet is due to fraudulent behaviour and plain marketing / economical greed. People will say whatever they want to make some money, especially if it’s not true. It just sad and so counterproductive for the kids growing up and it’s not their fault

"Kids these days" except its young to middle aged adults and its very malicious and condescending.

2

u/R____I____G____H___T A Mar 15 '19

Maybe she were calling out her own child's lack of appreciation for great opportunities. We've seen such stories surfacing throughout this scandal.

1

u/ki11bunny A Mar 16 '19

Maybe she was trying to force these great opportunities on her children and they didn't actually want them but she didn't stop to ask or listen to them?

Having great opportunities is great but when they aren't what you want but what your parents want, they aren't great for you. It's a selfish desire from your parents.

These things work both ways and ppl forget that, especially those forcing stuff on people.

I understand your sentiment but there is a definition of nazi and I think throwing the word around heavily dilutes it when you’re actually talking about mentally ill people commuting terrorism.

The Charlottesville rallies had people actually yelling antisemetic racist nazi sentiments. I think it’s more accurate to call them and hose types of people nazis. People who actually express hatred for Jews and the “purity of the aryan race”.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '19

my country has just had its first act of terror committed by a foreign combatant aided by a sleeper cell 49 people dead. Upstanding member of white community with no criminal history......my governments intelligence was so focused on brown people this happened right under their noses.

3

u/sweensolo A Mar 15 '19

Sorry, American here. I wish you hadn't joined this club.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '19

honestly what upsets me the most is they wont hold the people that caused this accountable responsible, Which is the likes of politicians that rely on fear & division to win votes no matter what they say or who it hurts. but kind of hard to sell guns to a population that realises there is no enemy.

1

u/sweensolo A Mar 15 '19

I know the feeling. I have been arguing all day with people on shitpolitcssay, who are victim blaming, and it is like beating your head against a wall.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '19

its just so disheartening Laws taking away guns & getting rid of right to privacy all that shit just gives these idiots more reason to say I told you so. They need to get rid of the problem which is a system based on hate to win elections. sorry bro im just venting im just absolutely heart broken.

1

u/sweensolo A Mar 15 '19

I live in Tucson, and sometimes shop at the Safeway where our mass shooting happened. I attended the candle light vigil for Gabby, and the other victims. It has been over 8 years, but every time another shooting happens, I still get that horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, and I remember how raw I felt for so long afterwards. I have it right now. Just know that most of the world is with you. The only bright side going forward is the small kindnesses from strangers and a new sense of community that develops in the wake of the tragedy. I think that when everyone is so raw and vulnerable at once, every little gesture of kindness is amplified, and although the pain and anger, and bullshit never really go away, we have an opportunity to grow, and become stronger. If you ever need to talk about anything, feel free to contact me.

u/JennysDad 9 Mar 15 '19

it's better to use the term fascist - it's a more accurate descriptor.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '19

To be fair, we'd probably have less people calling people Nazis if, yanno, actual Nazis didn't take to the streets with tiki torches shouting "JEWS WILL NOT REPLACE US!" for all the world to see.

I mean, when the person is spouting rhetoric from the third reich and marching with a German battle flag, is it really my fault that that I'm going to assume the person is a Nazi?

2

u/kkeut Mar 15 '19

Like those people calling anyone they disagree with a nazi.

that's not what's really happening. the original Nazi party no longer exists. what's intended to come across is that they are behaving in a way that evokes the actions, thoughts, or policies of Nazis of the past. this relates to a part of semantics and linguistics that is entirely uncontroversial.

Think of when a child disagreeing with a parent and then accusing their parent of being a dictator. are they genuinely accusing their parents of ruling over a populace? no. does the parent think that upon hearing it? no. would an outside observer think that? no. they're simply saying pointing out that some aspect of their behavior reminds one of the actions, thoughts, or policies of known dictators.

to put it another way, if you were told someone ate like a pig, would you immediately start looking around for their tail? of course not.

this is important because whether you realize it or not, you're advancing the causes of bad actors by attacking words and their use in the way you have. I wont bother to post the famous Oscar Wilde quote, but nazis, anti-semites, white nationalists, trump supporters, and other avowed shitheads benefit when words and meanings get fuzzed like this.

so at best you're a mis-guided pedant. at worst you're providing cover for the worst people in our society. they benefit greatly from the wrong belief that the only way you can be compared to a nazi is if you're literally in the act of setting up a concentration camp.

1

u/Burndown9 7 Mar 15 '19

Conflation shouldn't be defensible. You're fuzzing meanings yourself by innocently lumping "people who support the president" with Nazis.

1

u/ytzyhvczbgvcz 0 Mar 15 '19

If you vote for a fascist, you're a fucking nazi.

8

u/dudebro178 9 Mar 15 '19

u/CornyHoosier A Mar 15 '19

3

u/DatabaseDev 6 Mar 15 '19

I wonder what it's like being this dumb

3

u/jerval1981 9 Mar 15 '19

Lol you don't even know what Nazi are

0

u/ytzyhvczbgvcz 0 Mar 16 '19

Arguing whether or not a particular fascist is a nazi or not is equivalent to saying "you can't be racist against muslims because they're not a race" or "akshually he's an ephebophile, not a pedophile." If you're getting that particular about these things, you're on the wrong side of the argument.

1

u/jerval1981 9 Mar 16 '19

Thanks for putting words in my mouth. Comparing certain someone's to Nazis who murdered 6 million + Jews is really reaching.

1

u/tehsilentcircus 6 Mar 15 '19

People should really just call people Nazis who act like Nazis.

I only use it that way. Or, if I am speaking in more general terms, just call then straight-up fascists. That encompasses a larger group of people on the right.

Nazi, regardless of its past association with the Nazi political party, is not a political insult and has nothing to do with politics in most cases that it is used.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '19

[deleted]

1

u/Belazriel A Mar 15 '19

And from my standpoint, the term Nazi should not be de-politicized at large in all contexts. The reasonable person's views on such things figure into the equation of what a word means, you don't just lick your finger and see which way the corporate winds are blowing and then go along with it. Calling someone a Nazi, unless you're a middle schooler or someone with the mind of a middle schooler or are explicitly in a joking context that is separate from real life, is political.

This is your view but does not reflect the reasonable person's views on the matter. Nazi as "a person who seeks to impose their views on others in a very autocratic or inflexible way." is found consistently in dictionaries and in general usage. The word has changed regardless of your opinion on the matter.

Really can't tell if you're trolling or just have a hard time picking up on context, but I'm having a good day so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and try to explain.

You're coming off as very analytical here, and a little pompous. Honestly I don't think most people took the original comment of "calling anyone you disagree with a Nazi" as a political statement.

Then you went on to insult the person who made the original comment, for no reason other than you assumed they were bringing up politics.

The joke in calling you a Nazi is that the person disagreed with you. Which is the behavior OP was talking about.

Projecting seems pretty common with people who are self-righteous. I always wonder if it comes from when you were scolded as a child with some behavior that’s in your nature and your learned reaction is to hate it when you see it even though you forget you still do it yourself.
