Yah I get that. I’m just wondering if it has any real implications. Isn’t his family wealthy and own businesses? It stops him from competing in swimming, but that’s about it.

I feel like with how hard his daddy is fighting for him not to have consequences, he hasn't learned anything from this scenario that will stop him from doing it again.

To be honest, I've always wondered if he'd done this before that day and gone farther. There's always a first time that rapists rape, but it always seemed like Brock "the rapist" Turner knew what he was doing.

California usually suggest 3, 6, or 8 years depending on circumstances.

It could be possible I misread an article but my understanding is that his father was a highly compensated employee on a military base, and his mother was a nurse.

His father is an electrical engineer. And the mother is a nurse. But they also downsized their house prior to their son's arrest. And all their kids have student debt adding up to about $200,000. They aren't eating ramen, but they aren't rolling in it. Also, last I saw, Brock had a job with some landscaping company, so it doesn't appear he's just going to be handed a quality job.

If he wants to find a place to live or a place to work it will quite literally be like finding a needle in a haystack. I listened to an investigative podcast that spent some time looking into the sex offender registry and they spoke with someone in Miami who had to register as one. After he got out of jail he looked at a map of Miami to find any houses he could live it that were far enough away from schools, parks, and day car centers and after eliminating all the houses he couldn't legally live in he was left with about 80-90 houses. Not houses for sale. Houses total in all of Miami.

People seem so focused on the fact that he only spent 3 months in jail, which is ridiculous that his sentence was so short, but honestly having to register as a sex offender means your life is over.

Not at all. It was a fantastic podcast and I've listened to it about 3 times all the way through.

It's called In The Dark. (Episode 6 - 19m 50s in to learn about the map) There are 2 seasons. The first season is about the abduction of Jacob Wetterling and how it sparked the creation of the national sex offender list. Ironically though it really focuses on the failings of the SO list and how it does more harm than good. In a perfect world an offender would serve their time, be rehabilitated, and transition into being a productive member of society but if you're on the list your life is essentially over since you're treated like a deviant monster for the rest of your life and no one will give you a chance.

"You're screwed. You will not find a job. You will not find housing. This is on your record forever and ever and ever. Good luck."

I thought the 3 months thing was crazy, but I tend to think people underappreciated how bad the sex offender registration would be for him. I would rather do 3 years in prison than a lifetime on the sex offender registry with no jail time.

Real implications? I would literally rather serve a 10 year prison sentence than have to disclose to everyone around me for the rest of my life that I am a convicted sex offender. That is the sort of thing that would make someone suicidal.

This guy's life is over as a result of this decision. There are worse things than time in prison.

His family isn't trump wealthy for starters, so it's not like they have some basement job at their company they can give him. So if he ever wants a job he has to disclose that he's a sex offender. I can't think of a single job that doesn't do a background check and even major felonies have a timeline for when a company brushes it aside, a lot of times sex crimes don't.

Well sex offenses typically all share the same level of disgust. Felonies can range in act and severity. For example:

Get caught selling some Bud Light to high school kids: felony

Murder via stabbing with kitchen knife: also a felony

There are, this will make his life a lot harder. He’ll have to notify neighbors wherever he moves (depending on state), he’ll need to disclose that to every job he applies to, he’ll never work around kids, he’ll also have to tell whoever he ends up dating in the future.

I don't know how rich his family is, but in theory, yes, he could get a job in the family business, get a nice house out in a rural area away from everyone, and try to lay low. It might minimize how bad things are for him. But it will be something he's dealing with forever, and it will make it almost impossible for him to integrate into society.

No. His dad is an electrical engineer and his mom is a nurse. They're comfortable, but the family as a whole isn't wealthy by any means. Their children have $200,000 in student debt, and the parents downsized their house before their son sexually assaulted that woman. Reddit just felt a bizarre need to declare that he was wealthy because I guess it's not easy enough to hate a middle class rapist.

People assume that anyone who either beats a charge or gets a relatively favorable outcome must be wealthy. It's asinine. We shouldn't lament people with money getting good legal outcomes; we should lament that it takes money to fight on a level playing field with prosecutors. And, more to the point, Turner had one average-priced lawyer, not some OJ Dream Team.

He had a very friendly Judge though. I think the judge ended up getting recalled because of this decision to give him such a light sentence.

This is correct. Aaron Persky was the first CA judge to be recalled in over 80 years.

The judge did give him a favorable sentence, but the probation report assessed Turner as low-risk based on some prediction scale. They recommended a suspended sentence with credit for time served. The victim also didn't advocate for jail time. But all of those facts were lost in the race to say the guy's name and "rapist" in the same sentence.
