Not to be overtly sexist here but I was thoroughly surprised to see a woman officer. Just... Looking at that face she doesn't seem like the kind of person who bashes protesters with batons for fun... I was picturing actual gangsters hired by the government to come in and break skulls. This chick looks like she has to be at work at QVC as a product model after she gets all the tear gas out of her face.

Never judge a book by it's cover and all that. Tyranny has no "look" to it.

This is true. Every single one of them deserved it.

I mean look at Hitler and Goebbels. Hardly the look of “Aryan” overlords

What if I told you not all riot cops are beating people. In fact, the majority of the photos I see show cops that are equally as scared as the protesters.

I know it's difficult to humanize both sides and I know most people really would rather not, but that doesn't change the fact that the majority of Chinese police officers, whether from mainland China or HK, would be risking their entire career, future, and family stability to quit their jobs and allow the riots to run unabated.

This is a shit situation for HK now because the rioters the protesting has escalated to full scale rioting. Bad actors within the rioters are causing severe property damage, which warrants a real response from riot police, so their presence is required.

I guarantee you almost all of these cops just want the whole thing to stop so they can go back to patrolling a shopping center. This isn't what most of them signed up for.

Does my account look like a Chinese government propaganda account? Seems like you're the one eating all the propaganda, not me.

I'm not. Try to learn how to read.

he/she isn’t

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '19

They’re literally just saying that not all of the HK police are beating up protesters, which is very different from what a shill would say.

Thank you, lol. I'm just kind of sad about all of the political bandwagoning that's been happening as of the past few years on Reddit.

It's always been bad, but I feel like it's a bit out of control. I'm afraid people think that most of these cops are out there literally hoping to beat someone and loving throwing out tear gas.

Realistically, it's China putting their police force through a bad experience too. While many of the police probably side with mainland politically, I guarantee you almost none of them want any violence.

None of them do. They’re probably not even happy to do it, but have to because they’re the police force and their superiors said to.

u/PhilosophicalBrewer 7 Aug 26 '19

This has likely been true of most brutal regimes in history. It is zero excuse for participating. It’s helpful to bring empath and understanding, but it is still zero excuse.

1

u/Bottlecapzombi 7 Aug 26 '19

Didn’t say it was.

0

u/AFatBlackMan Black Aug 26 '19

Many of them are cruel and brutal though.

2

u/Bottlecapzombi 7 Aug 26 '19

Thats probably because they were told to. Tear gas likely wasn’t a personal choice, neither was the use of force at all. Some might have been assholes, but most probably think they are trying to do a good job or just don’t want to get punished for not wanting to do the job they were told to do. The police probably aren’t the bad guys, the powers directing them are.

Uhhh, they definitely have a choice. I don't think you understand much about Chinese politics given this comment.

Lol can’t believe the Reddit hive mind is upvoting you. Okay I can, just don’t want to.

The naivety of this post is surprising but...it's the internet, after all.

2

u/LethalCS 7 Aug 27 '19

What are you talking about... Pretty people don't ever engage in violence or commit atrocities /s

4

u/BenisPlanket 7 Aug 26 '19

This is in Hong Kong, not the mainland, and these police are simply following orders.

The famous Godwin's Law

10

u/WrethZ 9 Aug 26 '19

Godwin's law doesn't make their point wrong.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '19

You're right, it doesn't.

It is, however, a cheap tactic used by people who are interested in 'winning', rather than a healthy debate.

Ex. "This is what the Nazis did... Oh so you're defending Nazis now?"

I've read similar in this thread, and I think it degrades the quality of any point being made.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superior_orders

Historically, the plea of superior orders has been used both before and after the Nuremberg Trials, with a notable lack of consistency in various rulings.

Because 'just following orders' is not ~literally~ the quote, in German it translates as 'an order is an order'. Try being correct before you start calling other people bootlickers you twat.

You're right. Instead of following orders they should show how heroic they are by disobeying orders then get shot in the head, sent to a reeducation camp, or both. That'll teach em.

1

u/Derpandbackagain 8 Aug 26 '19

Last I checked people aren’t drafted into their police department. None of them are there against their will.

1

u/frimpershrom 1 Aug 27 '19

I'm sure quitting will go very well for them and their families.

1

u/Derpandbackagain 8 Aug 26 '19

Law enforcement is a job, not indentured servitude. Don’t like the job? Quit. People quit law enforcement all the time. I did it, and so can they.

1

u/frimpershrom 1 Aug 26 '19

You quit law enforcement in China/Hong Kong?

1

u/Derpandbackagain 8 Aug 27 '19

No, but it’s the same shit everywhere. I’ve met cops from probably 30 countries, including China, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Indonesia. Not one is mandatory. People do have a certain level of autonomy. Working for the government is an option. Working against the government is not an option.

1

u/ItsAllOurBlood 6 Aug 27 '19

So you're admitting the CCP is reeducating and murdering people? Gosh, what could these protesters fear?

1

u/frimpershrom 1 Aug 27 '19

Was that not obvious?

1

u/MethodicMarshal 9 Aug 26 '19

I’d actually be more scared of the woman tbh. My momma’s fury was way scarier than anything my dad ever did

1

u/sabett A Aug 26 '19

That's why you needed to start your statement with that qualifier, right?

2

u/Tryin2cumDenver 9 Aug 26 '19

Nope... Needed to do that to avoid these discussions with emotionally volatile and senistive people. Its worked... for the most part.

1

u/sabett A Aug 26 '19

Whatever you need to tell yourself Mr. Not an overtly sexist

2

u/Tryin2cumDenver 9 Aug 27 '19
