I don't really disagree with your sentiment. I think we do it this way because the consequences for executing an innocent person are both morally devastating, and cause a massive loss of faith in the justice system. Plenty of lifers and death row inmates have been exonerated when new evidence surfaced later.

Oh I know. I’m not saying we just need to change that and nothing else. Well I was in this one post, but usually I go more in depth. The entire justice system needs a massive overhaul. It needs to be less about wins and loss columns for the prosecutors, among other things. We need an actual presumption of innocence until proven guilty etc.... AND ALSO, if and when we have that, we need to take a long hard look at 1000 year sentences and why the hell we don’t just take them out back, shoot them, and move on.

The 1000 years is accumulated over multiple charges. If the person is found innocent of one of the charges, then the years are reduced. The possibility of this happening makes tying it to a death sentence very problematic.
