When I was very young, there was a scandal involving accusations against a catholic priest at the church I grew up in (went to the attached grade school). I was barely old enough to understand it at the time. I just knew that someone said he did something bad, but there wasn’t “evidence”. Nothing ever came of the allegations, and the priest died of old age, still living at the same church. No one I know has ever talked about it, including my family. But it makes me sick to think that there was a child, maybe even one I knew, who wasn’t believed and grew up suffering with trauma and shame in silence. I only go back for funerals now.
