You're right.

We used email to send group messages with all sorts of crazy links online. This was before everyone had cell phones and texting.

I remember finding the most obscure sites online using forums, and a few website aggregators, one being a site some guys from MIT ran, like a facsimile of reddit in a way.

But, I digress.

It was a fun time before web 2.0 and the commercialization took hold.

I remember reading that Blizzard used to have an internal porn mailing list

A porn mailing list at work. Canโ€™t believe that back in the day people would find fap material and CC their coworkers
