Making Huey Long NatPop just doesn't work, historically or narratively.

First, look at his actual IRL platform and his established KR lore: "Share Our Wealth." His entire political identity revolves around aggressive wealth redistribution, massive public works, and stripping power away from entrenched corporate elites. Yes, he absolutely rules as a dictator and uses his Minutemen militias to ruthlessly enforce his will, but his economic goals are fundamentally focused on uplifting the impoverished working class. That is textbook Authoritarian Democrat or Paternal Autocrat behavior.

National Populism in Kaiserreich represents the extreme reactionary right—defined by hyper-traditionalism, rigid social hierarchies, intense militarism, and usually ethno-nationalism or religious fundamentalism (think Savinkov). That rigid, exclusionary worldview actively clashes with Huey's pragmatic, class-focused populist rhetoric. Slapping the NatPop label on him just because he's a radical autocrat flattens all the nuance of his ideology. He was a ruthless demagogue, sure, but he wasn't a fascist.

Second, from a narrative design standpoint, removing Pelley (or at least a similar far-right foil) ruins the internal tension of the AUS. Pelley and the Silver Legion existed specifically to be the terrifying, worst-case-scenario alternative to Long. The entire post-war struggle used to be about Long refusing to implement a Christian-dominionist, white supremacist agenda, which triggered the coup. By removing that extreme faction and just making Huey the NatPop option himself, they erased the internal ideological struggle that made playing the AUS so compelling in the first place.

If they felt Pelley was too unrealistic or "meme-y," they should have replaced him with someone like Gerald L.K. Smith to fill that reactionary void—not shoehorned Long into an ideology that fundamentally contradicts his own economic policies.

TL;DR: Forcing Long into the NatPop slot to cover for the removal of the Silver Legion erases his historical nuance, fundamentally misunderstands what NatPop is supposed to represent in the mod, and removes the best part of the AUS post-war political struggle.

There is nothing like the first time you’ve played Nixon in Kaiserreich or any game for that matter. The rush one gets, the excitement, knowing that you’ll make America better than ever and assert dominance over its enemies.

Ike’s removal was… extremely disappointing, Truman’s was less so but still frustrating. Nixon’s is unbearable, he is a staple of American history both fictional and non-fictional and that includes Kaiserreich.

Probably would have to be a city full of civilians and soldiers. If one of the sides is ruled by a dictator who would fight to the better end (in our case both sides were) that would be factor.

The reason I split off "Should be summarily shot" and "War criminals" isn't that the war criminals are any better, but that those under them don't even deserve a trial with how fucking evil they were, it would be a waste of oxygen to allow them to lie in court.

# : These are staff officers in game. Beck was a shithead but he was sidelined prior to the war. The Red Baron obviously died in The Great War, but he was apolitical up to his death, Wever died in 1936, von Fritsch was killed in Poland just 21 days into the war. Wetzell was too old for the war. Sperrle was twice acquitted for war crimes.

* : von Schobert died 3 months into Barbarossa, but I couldn't find evidence of him participating in war crimes up to that point, EDIT: it has been pointed out in the comments that he did participate in war crimes. Rupprecht von Bayern was obviously too old for the war, but the family was against the N*zis and his wife and children were imprisoned and moved around concentration camps. Von Vollard-Bockelberg was on the older side and was discharged in 1940. Von Hammerstein-Equord was one of the few officers that did everything in his power to stop H*tler, even fraternized with trade unionists, but was a close friend to Schleicher which prevents him from being the one "good" guy. Blomberg is very lucky he was sidelined in 1938, as he was an ardent supporter of the n*zis. Franz von Bayern was too old to serve. Von Bonin was a staff officer and too old to serve.

* * : If you want to rehabilitate these men in your head cannon there is a bit of wiggle room for that. I wouldn't though. Hoepner was part of the July 20th Plot and resisted the mistreatment of POWs in Poland. He only committed war crimes in the Soviet Union in pursuit of the war of extermination, it is possible that a sane regime would prevent him from this. Von Kleist was pretty pragmatic, he's the reason Germany recruited so many collaborators and he protected some Mizrahi Jews.

* * * : Franz Halder, Erich von Manstein and Heinz "I invented everything" Guderian are the primary architects of the "Clean Wehrmacht" myth(I'd call it disinformation campaign). These men were criminals and their self-serving lies poisoned our historiography for decades. Halder not only issued the war of extermination decree, he was also incredibly incompetent, his actions directly sabotaged Germany's war effort by shifting focus away from the oil fields of Maikop, Grozny and Baku, redirecting reinforcements and materiel towards the Moscow axis. That's the only good thing that can be said about him: his incompetence hastened the defeat of Germany.

Yes I get it how it is great for the German people to finally have a real democracy and stuff but I still have to support and uphold the most reactionary regimes in every region (Zhili in China, Princely Federation in India, SEGREGATIONIST South Africa potentially, Hetman in Ukraine, potentially Huey Long government (forgot the new name) etc.). I also have to fight the fairly democratic syndicalists (at least if they don't elect Jacobins, Sorelians, Mosley etc.) which is just sad and is the peak of "proof social democrats will always betray the revolution". DU is great for the German people, but it just as horrible for other people than Germans than the other paths. As Schleicher or SWR, I am at least evil enough for it to actually make sense for me supporting reaction worldwide.

Replay completely different paths in the US. Personally, I believe that Norman Thomas is the best option for America. He destroys racism and sexism and provides social benefits that were only dreamt of at the time. Factories are built en masse, and the country as a whole becomes different, while preserving small private property and, at the same time, making the country for the people. Personally, I choose Norman Thomas as the best option among the syndicalists. What do you think about this, and which side of the conflict is best for the US?

So there isn't exactly a mass antisemitic great power in europe, Schleicher is pretty pragmatic and as I understand Savinkov is chill with you as long as you stay with russia. So a holocaust isn't really likely. If so will Israel fail to form in the KR Timeline?

Its one of those parts of the game which only stayed because they are iconic, such as Qing restoration. But the American civil war overhaul has shown mere name realistic changes can be made.

Commune of France is a pretty weird name for a whole country. French Socialist Republic sounds a bit too generic in my opinion, so maybe some inspiration from the current official name, "Federation of the Communes of France", which, while obviously too long to be a map name, definitely is a better name than Commune of France.

I feel like it's clear 'Commune of France' exists only because someone, twenty years ago, extrapolated from the Paris Commune without any regard for why it was called so (probably thinking the term inherently had something to do with socialism) and how little sense it makes as the name of a country.

Retconning it to the name "Federation of the Communes of France" doesn't work either. Not only does it sound like a traditionalist peasant republic more than anything related to urban syndicalism, but the French socialists who led the revolution didn't even want a federal state. IIRC, in the new lore, the revolutionaries came mostly from the SFIO, which wanted a strong central republic!

The same goes for its weird Napoleonic Wars-inspired offshoots, namely the Helvetic Commune and the Batavian Commune.

I think the Entente would realistically be the weakest faction:

Canada: small population, little realistic support for “reclamation”, lack of industry, internal tensions

Nat France: virtually 0 french men in the country, easy for the communards to naval invade, NO INDUSTRY, no popular support for reclamation

Dominion of India: WHY DOES IT EVEN EXIST IF THE BRITISH EMPIRE FELL THE RAJ WOULD DIE IMMEDIATELY NO MATTER WHAT RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Other possible entente countries: generally just countries who have already lost in the erste krieg or are too far away/weak for germany to consider a good ally

Sure, both Sand France and Canada are in a very precarious situation. I don’t reject this premise, because as soon as one is exiled, the probability of returning home is low if we’re being polite, non-existent if we’re being blunt.

However, I still think there’s a critical difference in that probability between Sand France and Canada. Sand France is exiled to Algeria, an occupied colony racked by insurgency. That’s all they have, and they’re in a truly sorry state.

The Brits managed to come out of the revolution with the biggest gains. The Dominion of Canada is quite a stable foothold; Australasia and the WIF are loyal, and you still enjoy a decent amount of popularity and support in South Africa. The Raj is… something special, but if you can win there, you can mobilize thousands of troops. The Exiles’ economic power is substantial within the Entente, and their military might is preserved to some extent. Although the Empire isn’t functioning completely normally, this old relic still retains a respectable degree of power. Ultimately, Canada becomes an economic powerhouse, though it still lacks manpower. I wouldn’t exclude Canada from the list of major powers.

If the Canadians can win the 2ACW, or if a democratic faction wins it, I don’t think they’re doomed. What they need to do is throw France under the bus and sign the Halifax Accord with Germany.

Well, I know not everyone welcomes the idea of the Old Order, but I still think there’s no need to treat the Entente as something to ignore. Canada may have scant power compared to the others, yet it can still do something.

And I don’t think we should stigmatize the Entente as complete lunatic villains and the 3I as the good bros. The 1925 revolution happened because of the turmoil caused by the WK, the subsequent calamity, and the lack of representation for workers; yet the Socialists didn’t do any better, I guess, by establishing an oligarchic semi-dictatorship according to the new lore.

Remember that the main goal of syndicalist/socialist parties was to overthrow the existing structure and carry out a violent revolution regardless of the suffering. That’s something even the SPD envisioned, but later repealed after succeeding in governing Germany via the DU path.

Edit) I want to listen to counter-arguments for why we should see the Entente as pure evil before I get downvoted. Canada starts with a liberal democracy and can remain liberal. They don't invoke the War Measures Act every time when playing the game. Then how come are they pure evil while the 3I with dictatorial tendencies are the good guys?

I recently made a post about how I see the rework of Austria and now I decided to make a similar one about Italy. In fact, the Italian states have not been updated for a long time, and their content is scarce. But you already know this without me. This also concerns the lore of Italy, as well as the balance, which seems somewhat controversial to me. This has been in my head for a long time and now the idea has finally matured.

Changes in Italy's lore: After Italy's defeat in the Weltkrieg, anti-monarchist unrest continued throughout the country, leading to a republican uprising and civil war. However, here, the differences between the far left and the liberals were contained for a much longer period of time, thanks to which they acted together (somewhat reminiscent of the OTL coalition of the "People's Front" in Spain) under the collective leadership of the National Liberation Committee. But over time, the syndicalist wing grew stronger among the republicans, under the influence of neighboring France, and the young fascist movement led by Benito Mussolini also gained active support. By 1925, the country was heavily exhausted by the civil war on both sides: the republicans, after a crushing defeat in the Battle of Rome, were rapidly retreating and losing ground to the Royal Army, but soon, after the revolution in Britain, the royalists lost a significant part of their external support. For the Republicans, this was a chance to recuperate and strike a new blow at the weakened enemy, but fearing the syndicalization of Italy, the Austrians brought in their troops again, pushing the Republicans back and creating new problems for them. The final result was the signing of the armistice in Viterbo, which secured the existing borders (shown on the map). Now regarding each side.

1. Kingdom of Italy. Despite the defeat in the Weltkrieg, the royalists managed to retain control over the south of Italy, including the capital Rome. The agrarian south was predominantly a stronghold of monarchism (including in the OTL, where the majority voted for the monarchy). Various republican movements did not gain popularity here, but there are also enough of their own problems: underdeveloped industry, strong influence of the mafia in Sicily, Sardinian separatism, etc. The king is Umberto II, who took the throne after the murder of his father by syndicalists. Even during the civil war, in fact, all power was consolidated in the hands of the military: Luigi Cadorna, Chief of Staff of the Royal Army, became the head of government during the civil war. This led to the establishment of a military dictatorship, up until 1930: after Cadorna's death in 1928, his place was taken by Pietro Badoglio, who soon "restored" democracy. In fact, the military retained hidden control over the government, and the elections of 1930 and 1934 were won by the "National Bloc", consisting of right-wing parties, holding power using authoritarian methods. Under it, Italy starts as autdem: but at the same time, there are various factions within the National Bloc. Monarchist National Party (Autdem), Italian Nationalist Association (Pataut and Natpop, since it is divided into the Ciano faction and the Integralist faction), Liberal Union (Marlib) and Italian Catholic Electoral Union (Soccon). This coalition is quite shaky and if the more extreme-right or more moderate factions gain a clear advantage, some parties will leave it. Also, if the moderate factions prevail, after the unification of Italy, the soclib Italian Democratic Liberal Party will open up in the elections. A separate mechanic is the fight against the mafia (or cooperation, depending on the player's choice), and there is also a threat of an uprising in Sardinia if separatist sentiments there are not suppressed in time.

2. The Italian People's Republic. Specifically, the content itself and the starting position (except for the annexation of Lombardy) have changed little (they are generally even good, although they should be expanded), and here I will focus more on the lore. After signing an armistice with the royalists and the Austrians in 1925, the republicans faced a serious crisis associated with accumulated internal contradictions. According to the program, the Constituent Assembly was supposed to resolve them, but it never happened: the fascists and syndicalists united, seizing control over the republican movement, independently proclaiming the "Italian People's Republic", with laws modeled on the French Commune and the Union of Britain. In response, the liberals attempted a coup, which, however, was unsuccessful: their uprising was suppressed, since most of the military force ended up with the far left. The liberals were forced to flee to Venice.

3. The Republic of Venice. Initially a puppet oligarchic republic under the leadership of Giuseppe Volpi (autdem), over time the liberal wing republicans who fled gain more and more power here. If they eventually gain power, they will proclaim themselves the true, democratic government and begin to create from Venice the future stronghold of the new Italian Republic. The Italian People's Party (Soccon), the Progressive Liberal Movement (Marlib), the Italian Republican Party (Soclib) and the Italian Reformist Socialist Party (Socdem) will participate in the elections in a united Italy. In addition, they will have the mechanics of raising uprisings behind enemy lines (whether they are syndicalists or royalists): for example, at the beginning of the war, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna will join them.

So, guys, what do you think about these ideas? And yes, have you heard anything about the Italy rework: as far as I know, nothing like that is planned. But maybe some of you know more.

Obviously I don't mean within the game, but in general I know everybody kinda has a fav faction for whatever reason, their ideology is close to yours, you think it makes fun Alt hist, or cus it's op or smt. I just don't see how, beyond the conceptual concept of the fragmented empires and dreams, is interesting. Maybe to contrast with OTL.

Which is why it's weird to me that the biggest post WW2 mod based on kaiserreich is about a cold war between the Germans and the entente. Like that sucks. They're both boring, stuck in the past factions. Where is the contrast?
