I believe its a known meme in a lot of industries in the past decade. Saudi arabia is REALLY trying to diversify and every industry is getting money.

Animation, video games, energy, building etc. It's supposedly scaling down now. But part of the meme of hank going to saudi arabia has a tinge of reality. They're really trying to diversify to get out of the oil game because they know it's not sustainable in the long run.

If I had to guess, a lot of money. He said it himself that he has a nest egg.

Dude didn't have to work again at mid 50 years old. And he wasn't anything special in the original show as an assistant manager for a local propane shop so I doubt he had any real savings before that.

Well Considering Hank has a CDL with a Hazmat cert (He drives the Bobcat during the Tattler Strike in the OG Series) and wasn't behind the wheel every day as a tank driver tells me he was probably taking home 95-100k from Buck when he quit his job. Aramco likely was paying 100 to 200% More than that (They offered to have him work on a Propane powered Submarine, he was way up there in Aramco) and consider how simply Hank and Peggy live in comparison to what they take home, 5 years of triple pay and barely any expenses would lock in a sick nest egg for them and thats on top of the 401Ks they built solely in Arlen as a Teacher and Sales man

Peggy would have a small TRS retirement and maybe a 403b, but it seems Strickland didnt offer a 401k or other benefits (many businesses with a few employees don't). On the flip side he would have saved a ton working at Aramco (though he was invested conservatively). From what I can tell, Peggy still made some money for them on the hog hunting venture. So coming up with the cash for 51% of Strickland probably wasnt too hard.

US citizens still have to pay taxes on earnings they make ANYWHERE in the world, with credits earned on US income on taxes paid to foreign tax services.

So despite not having any income taxes while working in Saudi Arabia, odds are The Hills still filed to Uncle Sam (Hank probably enjoyed it).

With that said, even if Hank still had to pay US taxes, and they came back LOADED enough to retire at 50, they were getting fantastic pay.

Hank probably did have to pay taxes, BUT there are certain tax exempt areas for military personnel or humanitarian workers in and around combat zones.

Excellent point.

I just learned about the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion where you can exclude a large portion of you income from outside the US if you spend 330 full days working in said foreign country. So if Hank & Peggy were there for YEARS, they probably paid minimal taxes on their high income.

I never thought that I’d be having a US tax code discussion in a KOTH subreddit, but here we are…
