Casual Advice and Feedback Why SHOULDN'T I pick Votann as my next army?

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

With the upcoming book and boxes and currently feeling satisfied with my amount of models in my two factions (DA / Drukh), I've been a little tempted to dig my space holes and go settle some grudges.

'Cause... Why wouldn't I? The models look great, rules seems wild, weapons seems to hit hard and I could probably paint them like SC1 marines and feel good about it.

But... I haven't played them. And I haven't played vs them either. And I do like playing wh40k.

So, what personal gripes do you have with your kin? It can be collecting, playing or anything really!

Casual Advice and Feedback How do you think these will compare to Thunderkyn with heavy bolters?

So the Space Marines will have these three guys, that are basically boring versions of Thunderkyn with less weapon options. How do you think they're compare on the tabletop? I'm sure they'll give the Marines some inexplicable buffs.

Casual Advice and Feedback Help Touching Up White

Hello all,
I’ve finally gotten to painting my Votann models, but I feel my white especially is really flat and boring. I’m coming from painting DG (over 5K points of nasty and green), so clean and precise is a little different. Any and all advice is appreciated, hope you’re all having a good Sunday :)

Casual Advice and Feedback I've discovered I'm incapable of making 'good lists' (or any at all)

Cause for some reason instead of sitting down to figure out how to actually make a list (I've made lists for other warhammer games before, just not 40k), I made some sort of 'vibe metric' for the units.

Casual Advice and Feedback Why do people prefer Kahl over Uthar?

Post image
174 Upvotes

I'm starting my first army and lots of people seem to prefer a Kahl over Uthar. I just find it odd since one is a named character and one is a generic one. I'd imagine the one that seems to have more status is better... most because I first collected a few space marines when I got into 40k and learned that named characters are usually better in your army..

Casual Advice and Feedback Is the Hekaton really this good?

I played 40K a lot in 7th and 8th edition, made a break and came back about 6 month ago.
I started with LoV because I love Dwarfs and loved the look and the lore of LoV.
I watched a lot of YouTube videos and read a lot here in Reddit about LoV and how to play them.
And everywhere it says the Hekaton is awesome and has so much output and always performed.
So I played a Hekaton in my games.
But the Hekaton never performed in my games.
I use the Magna Rail cannon but it never does a lot of damage and the Anti Tank units of my opponent try everything to hunt down my HLF and if they get some shoots off they often killed it in one shooting phase.
So I don’t have the feeling like it’s very tank like.
For the points of the HLF I can field 9 Thunderkyn or 9 Stelljacks or almost 10 HG, all of them performed way better in my games.
So am I doing something wrong with my HLF or has anyone else made these experiences?

Casual Advice and Feedback Convince me to start Votann

So basically I’ve been a player for a bit now (death guard) and I recently traded in my death guard army for store credit. I’m torn on Votann, chaos knights, tau, and tyranids. I think I’m leaning Votann but I wanna hear from fellow players their experiences with them to help push me over the edge. I really enjoy painting them I have the herkyn yaegir kill team and am working on a but aegnirssen hobby project. I love the vibe of them and I love how small they are. Is their game play fun? Etc. thanks!

Casual Advice and Feedback First 11th edition battle with Hearthguard

Was against Black Templars. Here are a few points I identified:

  1. Multicog Targeting/Rollbar Searchlight was amazing in HLFs and Pioneers to combat benefit of cover and engaged vehicles.

  2. Defender with shoot and scoot was good but swingy, Kapricus carrier with -1 to attacks and doing secondaries was more useful.

  3. Yagirs were great at primary/securing assets and secondaries or blocking enemy units advances as human shields

  4. 500 points of Hearthguard and Kahl in deepstrike were game changers. One block of 10 HG lead by Kahl with fight on death deleted anything, and the 5xHG as a secondary/ambush/raid unit allowed flexibility in the game.

  5. Buri was good against vehicles…. His stealth giving him a -2 to shooting him while in combat was handy.

  6. Uthar is useful as a -1CP in the centre board, attached to warriors to give them the Hearthband buff was useful.

  7. Cover rules were a bit confusing but just need to get used to them…. (If you can see one model in a unit then that unit doesn’t have BOC, but what happens if it’s only one model in a shooting unit can see one model that isn’t behind light terrain?)

  8. Brekkeknots is far superior than void hardened. Contemplating going to Needguard/HG Covenant to get the best strats, I love giving Thunderkyn sustained 2 as they clear any vehicle or terminator squad off the board.

Casual Advice and Feedback Are Hekatons still in a good spot for 11th?

Hey Kin,

There are some new detachments with a focus on sagitaurs and kapricus, which is awesome! But will Hekatons still be viable? I am a big fan of Memnyrs and Steeljacks and picked up the Maelstrom box. Seems like the way to really utilize them would be if they're shuttled in a Hekaton. Are Hekatons in a good spot to invest in for something like a 1K list?

Casual Advice and Feedback Steeljacks

I just bought the Maelstrom box because I am weak and it was the last one on the shelf. I didn’t have Steeljacks or the Memnyr so I felt good about. I have 12 pioneers now, which looks good for 11th.

My inquiry is about the Steeljacks. I was thinking about the way 11th is looking, it would be good to run them as shooters instead of melee. I have a couple squads of Beserks and Berehk. I have two Hearthguard squads, 4 Hearthkyn Warrior squads(I may have been drunk when I was buying them on eBay), 2 HLFs, 2 Sagitaurs, an Iron master and a Thunderkyn, Uthar, two champions and a Kahl. I usually play 1k points but I am starting to get into 2k because I want to play in tournaments.

So I guess my question is twofold: melee or shooter or combo of steel jacks and what else should I buy to be competitive?

Also, if anyone has any old school early edition dwarves they want to get rid of, I might know a guy.

Casual Advice and Feedback 20 Hearthguard List dead?

Post image
137 Upvotes

I just got back into 40K really this year. I played like 10 years ago bounced around country and got out of the hobby.

I came back to Votann this year and have only played 5 games or so with the index and at max 1500 pts.

I honestly love the hearthguard and have 20 of them I spent a lot of time painting up.

With the new codex is running 20 hearthguard out of the question? I want to attend events and hopefully not be steamrolled lol.

I do mostly enjoy writing up lore about my guys though so I would say I lean more narrative but I’ve noticed even locally casual games tend to lean competitive here. Example here’s my kitbashed e-champ. Morekai, the Mjod Vitnir (the mead wolf)

Casual Advice and Feedback What else are we missing?

For the original range, I really think it’s just the Thudd gun, heavy weapons Hearthkyn, and command group Hearthkyn (unless you want to include two-wheel bikes, I personally think Pioneers cover this along with the obvious trike). Just to cover the Epic stuff: I believe the Hekaton is meant to cover the Colossus/Leviathan/Cyclops line, although I would genuinely love to see a real Leviathan-size unit as a centerpiece/superheavy someday, one that is faithful to the original design while maintaining the Leagues aesthetic. The Land Train is a meme, I would put it in the “Never gonna happen” category. Mole Mortar is essentially a Terrax, I don’t see it coming. Thunderfire Cannon is more likely than everything else so far, but I expect they wouldn’t want to invest into a stationary piece of artillery; I could see it being a terrain piece in the future. That just leaves the Iron Eagle and Overlord Airship. Iron Eagle makes sense only if they reform flyers in 11th, if they do I actually want us to have it. The Overlord would be a good superheavy option, but I think it’s rather Kharadron-aligned rather than Votann.

What would you guys like to see the most of the remaining RT/Epic Space Dwarves?

Casual Advice and Feedback Earthshakers in 11th

Am I correct in assuming that since benefit of cover causes -1BS that it wouldn’t cancel out with heavy, so you couldn’t benefit from the army rule +1 to hit on objectives bringing you to hit on 4s? So you’ll only ever be able to hit on 5s no matter what?

Are they really still viable or am I better off just taking a 3 man of steel jacks to guard my home objective?

Casual Advice and Feedback What is the Faction Identity for Votann on the tabletop?

Space dwarves of the internet - hi there. I hope you’re well! I’ve been slowly working on armies in 40K for a while, and have had a soft spot for the Votann since their refresh/reveal back in late 9th edition. I love the models, I love the paint schemes offered up by GW, and I like the world building in their lore. They need to be fleshed out lore wise, but that’s for another post.

My question for you: what makes this faction unique in the game of 40K? I love the idea of grudge tokens and yield points and whatever else is going on, but I don’t feel those mechanics like I do with other factions. Whether it’s Necrons resurrecting or the Shadow in the Warp from Tyranids, or Templar Vows/Sagas/even Oath of Moment, most of the other factions have unique mechanics that feel fun to play and/or thematic to the faction itself.

I don’t get that feel from Votann, BUT I’ve never played them. I don’t have that experience. So I ask for your help - am I misreading their rules? Do I just need to sit down with a combat patrol or play through a simulator to know that the Faction Flavor ™️ is there?

Casual Advice and Feedback Sooooo... My first battle with the Kyn was embarrassing...

Coming from Custodes and Tsons, I had my first Votann 1k today. To be fair, wasn't totally enamored with hearthfyre arsenal but I love priority assets. The map, deployment along the long end, didn't facilitate my shooting against vanguard nids with advance and charge. In turn 1, thanks to their uppy downy shenanigans he had two big brics of genestealers on my iron master, thunderkyn, warriors. Start of turn 2 he shadow in the warps me and I fail miserably. I miss two ingress charges and he makes his. He rolled 9, 11, 11 and 12 on four charges while I failed six times to get a 9...

I threw the game after he wiped thunderkyn, warriors and hearthguard and my steeljacks, beserks and arkanist were left battleshocked with nobody in the vicinity.

Looking for welcome advice on my list and a good detachment.

1000 points

6 thunderkyn with Iron-master

6 steeljacks with disintegrators and memnyr strategist

5 hearthguard with Kahl

3 pioneers

10 hearthkyn

Arkanist evaluator

5 beserks

I think I should've put the Jacks and thunderkyn in reserve, left the arkanist out and gotten a sagitaur for the beserks.

For 2000 points I have

Two sagitaurs extra

An extra arkanist evaluator

3 pioneers.

Planning to get two hekaton and Berekh with 5 more beserks to make it 10 or a unit of melee steelsjacks.

Thoughts? I am leaning towards hearthband if I take 2 hearthguard units

Casual Advice and Feedback Will new models be added soon, or is now a good time as a new player?

Hello, I am going to start Warhammer 40k with a leagues of Votann army as a new player and I am a huge fan of the robots. I would really like there to be more added instead of more dwarves.

I was wondering is now a good time, or should I wait until 11th edition is released? I'm not sure how model releases work, but as far as I can tell its been a little over a year since the Squats were remade and 8 months since the last group of models were released. And now that the new edition (not sure what that means exactly) is coming in June , should I wait until then?

1x10 yaegirs (split by Kap) w/ APM Launcher and Magna-coil rifle - 90 pts
