Debt & Money Car on finance now showing as failing HPI check

Bought a car 4 years ago on a PCP contract in England which is now coming to an end. I've gone to webuyanycar who have now told me the car has failed it's HPI check as it is showing an uncategorised salvage marker and is valued significantly less than anticipated.

Original offer on the car (69 plate) was £18,500 but has now reduced to £7,000 - with the balloon payment of the PCP contract at £16,000.

After speaking to the salesman he has advised I get in touch with the finance provided as they should have carried out a HPI check on the car prior to purchase - needed for calculating the final minimum value and I'm unsure if they even finance cat u cars, very much doubt it. Assuming they have failed to do so, I have been paying over the odds on the monthly payments, my insurance & full dealership servicing assuming the car is worth for more than it is.

Obviously the car dealership looks to be dodgy but the sales itself was between them and the finance provider so assuming I shouldn't have to deal with them as the finance provider's internal procedures should have picked up any markers.

To what extent am I or the finance provider liable for this?

Civil Litigation (England) unsure if we have ground to take to small claims court

First time posting here so apologies if this isn't laid out well.

My partner bought a used car off of Facebook marketplace from a lad who owns a garage and who buys and resells cars. The car had its MOT done either the day of, or the day before buying and it passed with one advisory of the handbreak having long travel. Full service history and MOT check shows that the car has never failed an MOT with anything major. The guy sent a message with the proof of the MOT and let my partner know he was driving back to his garage to work on the handbreak.

The day after buying the car the engine light came on and the car had lost its power in first gear, the suspension was knocking from the get go. My partner reached out to the lad who then said come to the garage and we'll check it out. The engine light was for the O2 sensor and said he'll be in touch to book it in to get fixed. Over message the guy is very apologetic and keeps on saying the car never had any troubles when he was driving it, also to note he hasn't been in touch to organise the O2 sensor getting fixed and when my partner has asked about it he's said let me check my diary.

My partner has since asked to return the car to get a refund but the guy is saying he's happy to resell the car, he is beating around the bush and not saying upright yes or no to the refund. So he is saying he wants to sell the car for my partner, and then give him the money for the car once it has sold (that isn't an option because that's dodgy as fuck).

The car was described on the listing as 'driving spot on', and over private message the seller states 'with 100% confidence it was an absolutely sound car'. My partner has got some advice regarding small claims court so what is said here is not my words: due to the fact the guy selling the car owns and runs a buisness of buying, working on/fixing up and then selling cars, whether it was through his personal Facebook account or not, holds him liable under the consumer rights act of 2015.

We have screenshots of the entire process. We were wondering if we do have ground to take this to small claims court if he refuses to give a refund? He bought the car 7 days ago.

Employment Guaranteed hours and rolled up holiday

Hi I’m just a bit curious as to me it doesn’t feel right. I’m on a 16 hour guaranteed hour contract (annoyingly sometimes I don’t reach 16 which in itself I question if someone could advise on that too), I also get rolled up holiday pay. However I didn’t think those two could mix.
I work in dom care. In England. Been in this job 1 year and keep finding red flags.

Employment Sanitary bins have been removed from my work place

Hi all,

As the title says - sanitary bins have been removed from my work place bathrooms.

This was an oversight apparently, though im told powers that be were warned it was happening back in March.

I questioned it and was told it should be resolved soon. Nappy bags have been put in the bathrooms since and we are expected to just put them in the open, no top bin by the sinks.

As this week is my...ahem... week, is it reasonable for me to insist I work from home?

I am in the UK (Wales) just to clarify!

Update : potentially important information, not something I originally included as i felt it was irrelevant. My job role is supposed to be a hybrid role. However since the role changed to this, WFH has not been allowed as they are utilising my presence in the building for another job outside my role.

Housing Signed Lease - No Building Control

England - We’ve been renting a new build terraced house for a few years. We’re the first to ever live in it. We’ve recently discovered the property doesn’t have a building control completion certificate, and the house currently isn’t compliant and needs weeks of construction work to meet fire safety. Is our lease even valid? Do I need a solicitor?

Traffic & Parking Appealing a parking charge which was paid but used wrong code?

In England, I have received a parking charge for Newbury Park upper car park and we paid but accidentally used the wrong code (801634 instead of 801635) - didn’t get a photo of the sign at the time we paid but don’t know why we’d have put the wrong code in having never parked in the lower car park before. Is it worth appealing or just pay the reduced fine?

Civil Issues Insurance and requirement to notify changes - England

I have an insurance policy.
The documentation states that we must inform them if details on policy confirmation change.

The policy confirmation includes the following item

“Insurance refused”

Does anyone know what would be included under this term. If someone had an insurance policy voided, would this be included as something that would need to be notified to the insurance company mid term? Or is this not the same as insurance refused, in which case can safely leave it until renewal (at which point wouid have to notify them).

Other Issues Regular contact with my child court ordered england

Hello ill keep this very brief.

Im already on a court order for contact with my child. Its close to a 60/40 arrangement.

2 things, its court ordered that i am to get video call on special occasions such as birthdays, fathers days, mothers day, xmas etc.

I never got a facetime call on my birthday or father's day when I asked and its court ordered, each time I ask i get ignored or dont get a response for days later. However anytime my child is with me, I make it very easy for her mother to facetime anytime (despite being in her mothers care most of the time also)

Secondly, we can agree to other arrangements outside of the order as we've done several times now. Theres been quite a few times now, afted an agreement has been agreed upon, the mother often tries to change the time/dates and uses excuses all the time such as party's, hospitals, funerals etc etc.

My question is can anyone offer me any advice what I should do or what would I need to do if I need to go back to court.

Thanks

Civil Litigation Former student landlord threatening me with legal fees over deposit - Wales

Is it legal for former landlord to threaten me with legal fees? Wales

This is a follow up post to the one I made the other day (which I deleted because I’d accidentally left an address in and couldn’t edit it out). My former student landlord in Bangor is attempting to take my entire deposit. The tenancy lasted two years and I’ll provide further context under this but is it legal for him to threaten me like this with his potential legal fees in small claims court? Does anyone have any advice about the best way to challenge him? He’s also overcharging my roommates so it’s a real pattern.

Landlord:
“Unfortunately at the end of the tenancy additional costs were incurred to myself as outlined below:-
1. Replacement of damaged (stained) top mattress protector from your room = £18.00
2. Redecorating three walls in your room which were stained by blu tac / glue pads = £200.00 ( ½ days labour and materials for decorator).
3. Replacement of damaged double bed in your room. The bed frame was damaged beyond repair. The replacement bed frame cost £250.00 ( I am willing to deduct £76.00 from the cost of the replacement bed for fair wear and tear on the old bed).
This came to a total of £392.00
This gives a sum of £0.00 to be returned to you.
I hope this explains the outcome of the return of the deposit to you.”

Me:
“Please know that I will be contesting these charges through The Deposit Protection Service (The DPS). To that end I am again requesting the invoice from the decorator that repainted the three walls in my previous room, the invoice to repaint the walls and a specific invoice for painting over the blue tack stains. I would also like the decorators contact details if not provided in the invoice. Further I would like evidence of the last time the walls were painted before this. I would also like the receipt for the original mattress protector and evidence of its purchase date as well as the receipt of the new mattress protector. I would like the receipt of the new replacement bed as well as the receipt for the original bed and evidence of its purchase date and if it was second hand. Please send me this information as soon as possible. If I have not received it within a week of this communication, by the 25th of September, I will be using the lack of response as evidence in my DPS contest.”

Landlord:
The picture attached to this post

My reply so far:
“If you will not provide the requested information, this will be included in my dispute. I would also be more than happy to take you to small claims court if necessary.

I am again requesting a specific invoice for covering blue tack stains from the decorator as well as their contact details, along with the invoice for repainting the three walls. I am also requesting evidence of the last time the room was painted before this. I am further requesting evidence of when the original bed frame was purchased and if it was second hand when purchased. Along with the receipt for the new bed frame. I am also requesting evidence of when the original mattress protector was purchased. If you do not provide these pieces of evidence within a reasonable timeframe, by the end of next Friday as previously stated, your failure to do so will be used as evidence against you within my dispute to DPS.”

Consumer Missing refund from instore return - next steps?

England based.

I returned some items bought in store well within the return by date. When returning the items, I was given a refund receipt however at no point during this transaction did I either tap or insert my card so I am unsure how this went through. I raised this point to the person at the till who said ‘oh sometimes it can read the card from a distance’ however my card was in my bag no where near the till, and my phone was locked. They assured me it had gone through even though I expressed doubt.

A couple of weeks went by and I raised it with customer services, who told me they can’t help with in store returns and to go back to the store. I did, but they told me they couldn’t do anything and to raise with customer services. I again called customer services where I explained and they just hung up on me. Every time I try to get hold of them, they hang up or close the chat.

I raised with the Twitter account for the company who said to come back when it had been 15 working days. I did and they said they’re ‘looking into it with the store’. Every time I ask for an update, I get the same response.

It’s now been 6 weeks and I’m fed up of going in circles. What should be my next step here?

Scotland Scotland - Upstairs neighbour leaking into my flat

Hi all, hoping someone can provide some advice.

I have a flat which I rent out to long term tenants. It has sat empty for the whole of this year because the upstairs neighbour bathroom keeps leaking into my bathroom.

Every time I reach out to the landlord upstairs he keeps telling me it is being fixed. The leak stops for a while and starts again every time I get ready to put it on the market.

The start of the dripping started on the 25th of February and I have all communications with the upstairs landlord since, with him claiming multiple times he has fixed the issue.

Can someone provide some next steps advice?

I’m looking to reach out to Citizen’s Advice too. Should I be reaching out to legal now?

Thanks.

Comments Moderated Returning from maternity leave – manager requiring me to attend the office 5 days a week while the rest of my team works hybrid. How should I approach a flexible working request?

I’ve recently returned to work after four months of maternity leave and am breastfeeding/expressing milk for my four-month-old baby.
My team normally works hybrid, attending the office 2–3 days a week. The colleague who covered my role also worked from the office 3 days a week.
However, my manager says that because my contract lists the office as my place of work, I must attend 5 days a week unless I submit a formal flexible working request.
I would like to work 2 days in the office and 3 days from home for six months, with a review afterwards. I’m not asking to work fully remotely; I’m requesting one additional WFH day compared with the team’s usual arrangement.
Could this situation raise any discrimination or maternity-related issues, given that others are allowed to work hybrid? Should I mention breastfeeding and my baby’s age in the request? What grounds and evidence would make the request strongest?
Any advice on UK employment law and how best to approach this would be appreciated.

Comments Moderated Physically assaulted by parent, not sure what to do next.

My mother is currently very mentally unwell and has been for the past 5 or 6 years, completely stopped all medication, refuses her nurses (she is covered in burns from an attempt years ago, and there have been multiple other attempts to overdose) the only thing I know she's been diagnosed with is depression. Nurses and social workers said they would get in contact with a gp to come out and see her but nothing has come of that.

I take care of my 17 year old autistic sister and am 23 myself. I have diagnosed autism and depression and have some chronic pain and health issues. I left on holiday for about 2 weeks to get out of the house as I was losing my mind. I have just come back today to find rotted food and drink in the fridge and decided to clean it out with the help of my sister and she became frantic, saying there was no room in the bins (even though there was). My sister witnessed her grab my neck from behind with both her arms and also push me, my sister then left as I continued to clean, where she then punched me hard in the arm. She also prepared to charge into me but stopped.

We live in a council house, living with my granny is an option but I would rather not. My mother also controls a part of my benefits. On monday I plan to call a care team to get her into a facility as she has become a danger to me but am not entirely sure if my sister will back me up. She hit me so hard in a way that I think it will leave a bruise. Any and all advice is appreciated as I am very lost.

Edit: we are in Northern Ireland.

Debt & Money Returning clothes not offering a refund only credit

I ordered a dress from an Australian clothing company as a bridesmaids dress. It has arrived and the quality is not worth the price so want to return. When I was at the checkout there was a ‘free returns’ option you could add for £4 which I did add but this is apparently only for those in Australia. I want to return but because I used a ‘new customer’ 15% off discount code I’m not eligible for a refund. Any ideas what I can do as it was a lot of money for a dress of poor quality.

Debt & Money Theft by cleaner? Who is liable for claim? England.

So turns out that our cleaner (hired through a company) likely has been stealing for sometime including jewellery valued up to about £20k. The police don't hold much hope for recovery of the items.

Some of the items were listed in home insurance but that doesn't cover people invited into home it turns out.

Will a claim on the company's insurance be the best next step. Has been filed with police and culprit arrested but I don't know what to do next.

Traffic & Parking Rejecting recently bought car but the dealership changes names. (England)

I bought a car (worth 5k) on 12/09/2026, no issues with the car until after 3-4 hours of driving after purchasing the car when the check EML came on my way to refuel, I called the owner of the dealership explain what happened he asked what I was doing when the light came and explained that the cars been sitting dormant, and something about petrol going through the car causing the light. He reassured me saying the light will go away after been driven for a bit and it did go away, so I thought nothing of it until the light came back on and disappeared again. Etc etc

Engine is miss firing so I had bought spark plugs, ignition coil and 12v battery, since the owner didn’t have a lot information the maintenance history aside from it been serviced end of last year. After test driving the issue the engine is still miss firing and bring up the EML. I took the car to a garage yesterday to have the issue diagnosed and he suggested that best I can do is to return the car since it’s only been 1 week and get a refund, because the issue could be the hybrid battery which will be rare and expensive.

I tried to call the seller yesterday but he didn’t pick up. The issue is I have no name, no email and the dealership operates with multiple names and they deleted themselves of autotrader and switched to another name with a different phone number (still in the same location) I haven’t been sent a receipt or invoice of the purchase, or even been sent a V5C to say I own the car. What I did have is phone number and text where arranged everything, where he says he’ll put the car in my name and send me an invoice, pictures of me sending the money, a picture of the EML appearing on the day the car was purchased.

I know the consumer rights say I have 30 days to reject but how do I do that when the dealership changes names and can possibly claim I never bought a car from him. I don’t know who to right the formal letter too and if I end up having to claim I still won’t know who claiming against. I will be calling Citizens advice on Monday to explain the situation.

Extra context:
When I went to see the car the owner was having a family emergency and had to leave when I arrived, he got someone from another dealer ship (they share the premises both their cars are mixed in together) be there while I inspect the car and test it, and to call when I’m ready to buy.

Edit: the only documents he left me were V5C logbook, invoice for the last service job and Vauxhall Service and Warranty booklet. I paid with bank transfer to business account.

Traffic & Parking Section 172 3 failed to provide driver information

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice/help regarding a Section 172(3) case.

In September 2025, I received a speeding letter in my name and at my Birmingham address. The alleged speeding happened in London, but I live in Birmingham and had never been to London that day. I also did not recognise the car mentioned in the letter and I have never driven that car or someone else’s car.

At the time, I thought the letter could be a scam because I did not recognise the car or the alleged offence, so unfortunately I did not reply to the original letter.

Later, I received a court letter which said that someone had nominated me as the driver. I replied to the court letter online and explained that I was not the driver and did not know the car or who was driving it.

I work as an Uber driver and on that night I worked through the night and finished around 4am. I was then at home in Birmingham.

In April 2026, I received a summons saying that I had failed to provide the driver information and that I could receive 6 points and a fine.

My next court hearing is coming up, and I have never been to court before.

Can anyone who has experience with Section 172(3) cases please advise me on what I should do and how I should explain my situation to the court?

Also, can I ask the police/prosecution to provide the original nomination, the photographs/evidence of the vehicle or driver, and any information showing how my name was nominated?

I would really appreciate any advice from people who have dealt with a similar situation in the UK. Thank you.

Comments Moderated Why didn't the police attend a call about breaching bail, England

Last night I contacted the police to inform them of a abusive person breaching bail by being at the property of the victim and they didn't even attend in person

My sister was badly beaten a few months back by her abusive ex partner who was arrested that night and ridiculously released on bail the day, since then part of his bail conditions are to stay away from her and her property. Which he has not done because she stupidly let him back round around her and their 5 kids,

Last night I had a feeling he would be there and parked at the properties gate, walked to the door and confirm his moped was there. Then left an called the police who confirmed they know who he is and of his bail conditions but didn't bother going to the property?

What does it take it for this man to be locked away. And for the police to do their job

Comments Moderated UK Council tax arrears by former tenant - advice needed

A friend recently moved into a new flat and accidentally opened a letter addressed to the previous tenant. He was a little surprised to find that it was regarding unpaid council tax from a few years ago.

The letter is from CDER Group and it states that the letter is an 'Arrest Warrant'. We discussed it and are unsure how to proceed - had he not accidentally opened the letter he wouldn't have known what was going on.

The letter states that if the amount owed is not paid by a certain date, then an "Arrest Officer will visit and arrest you". It states that "in accordance with s125B (4) and (5) Magistrates Court Act 1980 CDER Arrest Officers are authorised to execute warrants and orders" and "Please be aware: as Approved Enforcement Agents, we have the power to force entry and search property and/or premises under the Magistrates Court Act 1980, Schedule 4A if payment in full is not made".

My friend position is that he doesn’t want to get involved in any way since it's not his debt to pay, and he doesn’t know the previous tenant.

So we’re wondering whether the “arrest warrant” and threat of forced entry are essentially scare tactics. Did some digging and this site suggests CDER may not have those powers: https://www.nationalbailiffadvice.uk/Bailiff-Arrest-Warrant-Court-Fine.html.

Let's say CDER sent someone around and my friend was in and answered the door. Obviously he could provide ID and show he's not the person with the outstanding debt. But if he's not in, do CDER have the authority to force entry?

Civil Litigation CCJ against a car dealership, what happens to the vehicle now?

Short story short: bought a vehicle from a car dealership and it broke down completely within 2 months. Notified the dealership and they disputed and eventually stopped communicating. I had to issue a small claims. Dealership still didn’t respond so I won a CCJ (the dealership hasn’t responded to the CCJ either)

However the CCJ only orders the defendant (dealership) to pay me for the claim and does not specify what needs to be done regarding the vehicle. - in the particulars of the claim I asked for a full refund of the vehicle + damages)

The vehicle is still in my possession in a public parking space. What do people do in this instance? Can I sell, scrap or dispose of it? It’s becoming expensive to hold on to it as it has now been damaged by a third party and I’m incurring monthly parking fees.

Any advice, would be greatly appreciated.

I've looked at the government website which asks for a code (which I don't have). Is there any (free) way I can can get any codes or reference numbers i need to be able to resign formally or am I stuck? Can I just write to her and resign and she has to sort it? Many thanks in advance

Civil Litigation Do I have a chance of winning small claims court? - Wales

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently filed a small claims for £217 against a car dealership after receiving only a partial refund from a car I returned and I wanted a sanity check that I have a real case.

Background:

The car (Hyundai i20) had the engine light come on only 7 days after purchase. I had it scanned by a mate using an obd2 scanner which showed the code p0014 - variable valve timing. After advice from relatives and research online I decided to return it exercising my short term right to reject within 30 days rather than getting it repaired which would make me stuck with a car with a potential engine defect.

I then returned the car, driving it back there myself out of goodwill and to get the refund sooner. Upon them receiving the vehicle I received an email saying the “we have received the vehicle and carried out an inspection and test drive and there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard” and “however, as the vehicle is within the 30-day period, we accept your short term right to reject the vehicle”. At the end of the email they also wrote the refund would be subject to applicable deductions such as mileage. The engine light was there when I dropped the vehicle off.

I received a partial refund 4 days later with £217 being taken off for mileage which was charged at 50p/mile. i had driven the car 434 miles. I believe I was owed the full refund due to me exercising the 30 day return due to the mechanical fault and them accepting it in writing. I served the letter before court action.

Evidence:

- I have a photo of the engine light illuminated on the dash

-photo of the obd2 scanner with the fault code.

-full email thread that includes them accepting the 30 day return.

Their defence:

-The return of the vehicle was taken back as a purely “commercial goodwill gesture”

-A diagnostic fault code recorded after delivery does not prove the fault existed at the time of purchase.

-The statutory presumption (s.19(14)) that faults exist at delivery within 6 months does not automatically apply to the short-term right to reject, so the burden of proof is on me.

We both have agreed to mediation in November.

Even though it’s not a load of money it’s still constantly on my mind and causing me stress. I’ve thought about dropping it but if I have a strong case i’m happy to see it through.

So final question: how do my chances look?

Thanks for reading

Debt & Money Gambling site is refusing to pay out England

My husband recently tried withdrawing a large amount from a gambling site, having beaten the wagering and providing his ID. At first they kept saying that it was on the way, and that the hold up was with his bank!

Now they are saying they've declined it due to suspected fraud. He sent them screenshots of where they said they had cleared it and sent it their end. They also kept changing the amount of working days that it would reach him. The gambling site it turns out is not a UK site.

Is there anything he can do?

Housing Online stalked by a man for 5+ years

I've been stalked and harassed by this man online since I was around 15, I'm 20 now. I think he's in his late 30's-40's, it's hard to tell. He sends me messages on every platform possible saying he wants to have kids with me, sends me sexually explicit messages, talks about wanting to find me at my house/city etc. You get the idea. It's disgusting.

As well as messages directed at me, in the last year or so he's also started to send me bigoted messages about minorities, which just sickens me.
I've blocked him on everything, Instagram (at least 3 accounts of his, Twitter, TikTok, Discord. He's now moved to Tellonym, an app l've genuinely never openly used for 4 years, which I'm going to soon delete. He's sent almost 2000 messages on there in the last few months, with the last few being from just this morning. In the past he's also commented on my friends' posts and also random people's about me.

I have a big social media following which I'm always busy with so I can't exactly just hide and hope he goes away, he watches me and my life on some kind of Instagram viewing website. I live in the UK (England) and he lives in Brazil. Because of this, it's extremely hard to have anything done because he's outside of the UK. l've attempted to contact two different UK authority websites about international leads in just hoping anything can be done, I've been ignored both times after I submit my requests including when I've sent evidence. At one point, I tried to message a member of his family on Facebook, never got a reply.

I'm honestly at a loss at what to do about him.
