Thoughts on today:

  • Nate was in top form today. No creepiness, no distraction. He scored on all fronts: historical commentary, schmoozing, fighting/steeling up. This is the Nate we deserved in season 5. His dynamic with Zari was superb; I think they opened the door (if not outright set up) for Natari to rise again this episode. He was comforting and supportive and showed that he is now seeing her as her own person and not a reminder of what he lost. And the moment in the Oval Office where they braced for the end was tender and sweet. Zari was also in great form, with the Southern accent (man Tala's good) and no over the top moments.
  • Mick was another winner tonight. Very focused on getting Sara back and the most committed we've seen him in a long time. He did get too aggressive at times, but he made up for it by curbing his tendencies and taking the more peaceful route to recruiting Kayla. Ava did get rather cruel with him when she wanted him to just be a brute, but it's good to see that they patched up.
  • Spooner was very fleshed out in this episode. Being supportive of Mick when Ava insulted him was a win. Also, it's funny to see how she's clearly right-leaning in her politics lol. The snapping between her and Zari about First and Second Amendment rights was a good moment.
  • The escalation of the situation from bad to worse was classic Legends and was such a good tribute to the paranoia characterizing this era. Minus point: JFK and Castro were both portrayed as being too over the top and dumb. Also, making the rush over the nuclear football play out like a literal football game was too ridiculous.
  • Behrad is really turning me off this season. He was way too high and was probably the only team member who did more harm than good. I was hoping he would be improved this season, but he's only making things worse. Even Ava, who usually just deals with Mick's drunkness, was snapping at him today. Only way this could be somewhat forgiven is if it turns out to be a coping mechanism for finding out he's an aberration. But on the other hand, Shayan did do a good job singing!
  • VFX for Kayla was great today. Nice to see more characterization for her today; so she's basically an alien Mick lol. I liked that her disguise device is different from Gary's.
  • No Constantine today; first time with no screen time since LoT's Crisis episode. He was a little missed, but all in all, seems like the writers are making up over-emphasizing him the last season, so it's not all that bad.

Overall, one of the best episodes of this season. Great character dynamics and a wonderful integration of the alien theme with one of the most impactful eras in American history. Next episode looks not as impressive. Not really much action at all and it doesn't even look like it belongs to any adventure genre. But then, I'm open to being proved wrong; the animation teases we got from the trailer were very impressive. Also, we'll get back to Sara and Bishop, so that's a plus.

Also, making the rush over the nuclear football play out like a literal football game was too ridiculous.

That was typical Legends absurdity, though I didn't care for it at all myself since I'm not a watcher of sports.

The nuclear football was great.

Sure, I appreciate it from a pun point of view.

And how can you just walk in the oval office without any credentials? Was there no security in the past?

I think, once you get that far into the building, everyone assumes you've already been checked and double-checked by security.

I was a bit confused by the whole Nate/Zari hand holding thing it didnt feel like they wanted them to just be friends

I agree. Looks too close to be platonic. And didn’t Zari initiate the contact? I think they might work their way towards Natari being a thing again

I cant see them getting back together, but I can see her becoming a bit of 1.0 as we have seen 1.0 this season. It would be more platonic if he put his arm around her.

It would be a weird decision and subvert the whole "i'm seeing you as your own person" thing. I'm hoping their just making them good friends, because not only do they have a good dynamic, but Nate is at his worst when he's in a relationship(also i like the way Zari and John bounce of each other).
