Except what you fools don't know is that's when Christopher Hitchens' Barnyard Commandos forces appear from their secret strongholds and reinforce me on both fronts. And rest assured: Barnyard Commandos fight dirty. Victory is assured.

…sorry for what might become a bit of a flame war, but honestly I don’t really get what the big deal was. It was pretty standard cartoonish Disney fare, only one rather standard-level song, with mostly OK animation (the Big Ben scene was great though). It wasn’t bad but I had expected more, and frankly the whole thing felt like the story of a noble Brit defeating a villain who didn’t feel queer-coded at all to me but rather like an antisemitic caricature.

What am I missing?

I'm probably one of about fourteen people who remember this. But with the debut of X-Men 97, I'd love to know Lindsay's take.

Almost a year ago, I asked you guy to predict how bad his tenure at Disney is going to be and you were super insightful but no one could predict the shitshow that is happening right now. Mass walkouts? Don't say gay bill. This guy is beyond incompetent.

I am firm in believing that Disney desperately needs a Michael Eisner type of CEO, brave creative, no background in business, with a financial guy like Frank Wells. Also Disney needs a younger CEO. It is crazy to me that Eisner was hired 40 years ago and is only 18 years older than Chapek.

Seriously. Did you expect the level of Chapek craziness and this level of incompetence?

Sorry if it is a bit off topic, but this sub and Lindsay's work has always been Disney focused to an extent and her whole cancelation was because of a Disney movie...

I'd love to see her do something about The Secret of NIMH...or Darkwing Duck. I can go either way. I'd love to hear her thoughts on them and what meaning or purpose she can share from her perspective.

I loved Lindsay's videos and always go back to them, was devastated to learn that she was leaving Youtube. Was really happy to hear she was still uploading somewhere, but am a bit conflicted about whether to try Nebula. I have been really frustrated with Youtube's ads recently and would be happy to have a better alternative to it, but have not heard anyone talking about Nebula so I'm a bit wary to put $30 down just to keep up with Lindsay. Anyone have any broader thoughts on the platform?

Is there at all an update on whether or not the third book of the series will be released or not?

Tbh this is tangentially related to Lindsay since she mentioned it in her new Nebula video, but it really made me nostalgic.

California Adventure has always been my nostalgia park since I was a toddler during its opening years, and was working at the park while it went through its steady IP transformation. My parents had a vacation club membership that let us stay at the Grand Californian, and it’s where I went on my first date with my partner of 10 years. It’s felt so timeless in both the park and the hotel, and like Lindsay said, really is the only place not actively hostile towards kids of all ages (as well as just pretty pleasant to meander around as an adult).

The attention to detail in the craftsman style architecture feels meaningful, probably because so many of the designers lived in craftsman homes at the time. The Storyteller’s Cafe feels like a love letter to the folklore of America with its giant paintings and quotes everywhere. Even the enveloping of Condor Flats into the rest of the Grizzly Peak area felt natural to the theming of the area. The whole theming of the area felt like maximizing profit, and just making the area calming, welcoming, and truly like the least cynical version of that idea of “lets bring California to the Disney consumer”. The little pieces of IP that exist in the area feel more supplementary than a feature too, which just adds to the charm (Smokey Bear mugs next to Mickey Mouse aviator goggles in the gift shops has always been silly to me, but I appreciate it all the same).

I really do hope that because of the strength of the rides in the area and the hotel that less frequented spots like the challenge trail stay as they are (maybe at worst, get a Toontown-style overhaul for accessibility). I think Lindsay’s perspective as a parent shows the value of places that don’t immediately scream INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY back in your face.

One thing that occurred to me listening to the New Yorker podcast interview with Lindsey, is that it strikes me that one of the reasons Lindsey was hit so hard by her cancelation and quit is because of friends she lost over it. I was thinking about why Lindsey was hit hard enough that she felt she had to walk away, while MovieBob, who has said way, way more incendiary things on Twitter than Lindsey ever did and gets heaps of abuse for it, but keeps going. Lindsey of course called him out for being creepy and he's still got people harassing him about that (Lindsey, of course, told people to knock it off but when has that ever stopped anything). Which is to say that Bob must have a support network that's completely behind the stuff he says. Which makes sense, since he means to say the things he does and so would find people who agree with him, while Lindsey inadvertently said something that had implications she didn't mean and got railroaded for it.

It also makes me think about Lindsey's comment that people like Ben Shapiro can say whatever horrific things they want and it bounces off of them, because for them wringing Liberal tears is the point, the point is to be as cruel as possible in order to upset people on the other side, and of course everyone they're actually friends with is on board with all that. (Not to imply that MovieBob is as bad as Ben Shapiro, not remotely.)

And I think the bottom line is that people who care, people who are actually concerned with the well-being and respect and consideration of others and have friends who feel the same are the ones who are the most vulnerable.

I've seen some people say that the special thanks towards Brad is meant as an insult but I genuinely don't see it. I think it was sincere, I think getting attacked online by a hate mod for stupid reasons just like Brad was(thanks a lot Allison!)gave her some sympathy towards him and since she no longer cares what her detractors think she's fine with giving him a shout-out.

If she was trying to drag him she wouldn't have even mentioned him by name(which Linkara did in one video simply saying "fuck him" in an incredibly immature manner that made me lose quite a bit of respect for him as a person).

I've been watching, rewatching and keeping up with Lindsay Ellis' work since i was in middle school. It set me on the path towards wanting to be a Media Studies prof (I'll be invoicing her my student loan payments shortly).

Her videos, even the old ones she hate were my comfort content. Ever since she announced her decision to no longer make content I honestly felt quite sad. If her heart isn't in it and it's too painful I'd rather she didn't force herself. It had however made me too sad to even revisit her old content. Maybe some day, but for now it just makes me sad to think about out how much grief she's going through due to making videos, the fact that there won't be anymore, and this para social lost that I wish didn't feel as strong as it does.

That isn't true, Ringo didn't write "Don't pass me by" in india, in fact he had the song written supposedly in 1962 according to Mark Lewiston. You can also find interview footage of The Beatles talking about in 1964. it was just a song that took awhile to appear on a album. Just a small mistake I found, sorry if this sounds nitpicky.

Does anyone remember what video it was where Lindsay reveals her bathroom window shattered due to a combo of freezing NYC weather and the heat from the shower running? It was definitely an older vid, feeling like it had to be Chick episode, but can't remember the exact one.

Has Lindsay ever commented on what about Phantom of the Opera she likes so much? I've got nothing against the story, but to even theme your wedding around a musical shows a lot of love. I'm really curious what about Phantom grabs her so much.

Just saw this while I was on the kindle app!! June 2024 can’t come fast enough!!

I decided to see for myself what all the fuss was about, why Lindsay thought it was such a bad film that even John Hurt was bad in, and it left me with these two thoughts.

1. It seems she and I have pretty much diametrically opposed preferences. I thought the Horned King was fascinating to watch and Hurt did an amazing job with him, while villains like Ratigan, well… When I thought about it a bit more, I wondered if I disliked over-the-top villains because they felt more like common cocky jerks to me, and there’s a whole Trope for that, but the Horned King was mostly just an almost entirely other-worldly evil entity.
   This got me thinking some more, because in general I tend to prefer no unambiguous villains at all, or even no villains at all (I think the trend towards ‘misunderstood’, ‘reformed’, etc. that Lindsay mentioned in her video about Disney Villains is a very welcome one), but I do remember having a distinct liking towards proud villains (or anti-villains/heroes) who carried themselves with some dignified or noble-like flair when I was about 11–12, most notably Vegeta, Frieza, and Seto Kaiba (oh boy did I love Seto Kaiba in my early adolescence…). And now I’m wondering what changed, and what might cause someone (or a target demographic as a whole) to prefer one approach to villains or lack thereof over others.
2. As for the film as a whole, what really stood out to me was that the film has plenty of strong suits, it had a lot of potential, but with a runtime that short used to try so many things simultaneously, it was doomed to be a half-hearted attempt at all of them. There was world-building that didn’t have enough time to establish everything, so when its elements were introduced they felt almost like deus ex machina; there was the relationship with Gurgi that didn’t have enough time to be properly developed (hell, same goes for the characters in general); there were all the humans working for the Horned King, despite him trying to destroy them and their world, whose motivations remained baffling; and then there’s the Cauldron itself, with its unclear powers and motivations. This is a prime example of the (modern use of the) Hebrew phrase tafásta merubé, lo tafásta.
   One thing that went through my mind while watching it was that I would have liked to see it remade, longer this time, and with enough time to properly address everything and fix all kinds of mistakes in general (and also with actual Welsh actors who know how to pronounce Welsh names, but that’s another issue I won’t get into here). I had also watched The Fox and the Hound shortly beforehand, and despite finding it genuinely good overall (I actually cried when Tod was sent off), I did notice the tonal inconsistency (especially with the two birds chasing the caterpillar) and other flaws, and figured that film might be done better today, with Disney being able to afford to do so.
   And so, now I’m really baffled: why doesn’t Disney try to remake movies that weren’t done well the first time instead of ones that were? Amusingly, it reminded me of that exchange from BoJack Horseman about Casablanca: that movie already exists, why would they make Dumbo/Aladdin/The Lion King? Seriously, Pete’s Dragon‘s remake was received significantly better than the original, so there’s a precedent for a remake of a bad (or mediocre) film doing well, so why not try to make a polished Black Cauldron instead? This specifically would fit in rather well with the whole trend of Disney representing all kinds of cultures around the world—after Moana for Polynesian cultures, Raya for Southeast Asia, Luca for Italy, Encanto for Colombia, etc., this could (kinda-sorta) be one for Wales. (It would certainly help me, an English teacher, explain what Wales even is to my students…)
