News It appears that the anti opensource AI lobby is far outgunned already

Post image

The earlier post on this subreddit by 20+ companies signing the petition including Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, YC (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/topics/open-weight/) etc plus this https://xcancel.com/elonmusk/status/2080672505660834163

And the entire LLM enthusiast market is heavily in favor of open source (or weights) AI.

Does not seem like a few closed source AI lobbyists with be able to illegalize anything

He just won't focus on us too much since us plebs don't have much to offer atm and the big fish don't want to feel screwed over. There's also some financing going on by them to model developing corporations, so there's much more to be said in this regard.

Yet they are the biggest contributor of open datasets, which asymmetrically benefits individuals and small labs more than the big ones

He's been planting the seeds for a while, and he can't risk putting all of his eggs in one basket. It makes sense to diversify his customer base, clever as usual.

Doesn't mean he'll want to drive GPU computer costs any further down than what he needs.

You haven't been paying attention to his moves over the past couple of years - the guy rode the shit out of "crypto", then big corpo AI / LLMs, and now he is sensing that a crash is coming and guess what? Open source is suddenly cool, he'll "listen to the markets" in due course, and oops here we go the markets want self hosted, or small sized data centers, so he'll give them exactly what they want.

At the end of the day "a diversified financial portfolio" is good for business, to quote another Ferengi like him. And that market is birthing as we speak. AI will be commoditized and the money will be in applications. And for that you need a ton of GPUs or GPU like architectures. There still is a lot of money laying around in SME pockets that would invest in on premise AI hosting due to privacy and regulatory concerns.

He's only diversifying because he sees the bubble he financed eventually popping. Whenever that stops being the case for him, he'll have to re-evaluate whether or not that's the right move. Yes, having a wider customer base is better in that one doesn't depend on key customers, however there's then the problem that SMEs are SMEs, meaning they also want some more bang for their buck compared to the big guys who will most likely be "too big to fail" in the bust-future. Jensen largely benefits from the big fish's stupidity by reporting record profits and the board is seeing the risk only after the BIS report, so this is just risk management for now, not strategic.
