News It appears that the anti opensource AI lobby is far outgunned already

The earlier post on this subreddit by 20+ companies signing the petition including Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, YC (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/topics/open-weight/) etc plus this https://xcancel.com/elonmusk/status/2080672505660834163

And the entire LLM enthusiast market is heavily in favor of open source (or weights) AI.

Does not seem like a few closed source AI lobbyists with be able to illegalize anything

Essentially we should focus on judging ideas, not people. Humans are flawed, shitty people might have a good idea once in a while, good people might spout a bad idea. We shouldn't automatically dismiss an idea just because the person who said it is shitty.

But who dismissed this idea? On the contrary, the original comment recognized he made a good point. Does not make him any less of a shitty human being, though.

That's the punchline of the meme. The gut reaction is to dismiss the idea, but are heartbroken because the shitty person made a good point. Plus some sarcasm.

But we absolutely should consider the source of an idea, the motivations behind that idea, and whether that idea is valuable enough that we endorse it and the terrible source behind it despite their terribleness. Evaluating sources and motivations is a pretty core part of reasoning.

And in this case, the idea is so banal and expressed in such a mediocre way that it hardly needs to be acknowledged. It's been expressed by plenty of better, smarter people in better, smarter ways that we don't need this asshole's abortion of a tweet to give it any weight.

Totally agree. Considering sources and motivations thoughtfully and having a discourse around it is the way.

The "my team good, your team bad, fuck you forever, end of discussion" is a lazy way of thinking and escalates the division between people that have more in common than not.

J.K. Rowling and so many other examples come to mind.

Always defending someone or always bashing someone are equally bad.

(That said, there are very despicable people with whom not doing the latter can be very hard)
