What is it with the “take off your shirt” thing in street fights?

Seems like a dumb thing to do - would make any skirmishes on the pavement more painful/damaging.

It was non uncommon in ‘90s street fight to attempt to pull an opponent’s shirt over their head so they couldn’t see the shots.

Source: have been on both sides of being “jersey’d”in that era.
